The Beverly Hills Playhouse is an acting school with theaters and training facilities in Beverly Hills, California, and also in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City. It is one of the oldest acting schools and theatres in Los Angeles County, California. It is located at 254 South Robertson Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
The location was originally home to the respected Bliss-Hayden School of Acting run by a husband and wife team of motion picture actors—actress Lela Bliss with over 45 credits stretching from 1915 to 1965, and her husband actor Harry Hayden with over 260 credits listed from 1936 to 1955 on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Veronica Lake, Mamie Van Doren and scores of other working actors studied there.
In 1954, the Bliss-Hayden Theatre was acquired by Douglas Frank Bank and Jay Manford, and renamed The Beverly Hills Playhouse. This was a showcase for many productions written by Douglas Bank (The Preacher, and Journey to a Lonely Star) as well as well-known plays of the time including Jenny Kissed Me, Room Service, The Lawyer, Harvey, and The Second Man. Many actors had performed there including Stanley Adams, Anne Baxter, Ken Mayer, Michael Fox and Louella Parsons, and directors Larry Stewart and Arthur M. Lowe, Jr., as well as others. They owned the theatre until 1959.
Beverly Hills is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, surrounded by the cities of Los Angeles and West Hollywood. Originally a Spanish ranch where lima beans were grown, Beverly Hills was incorporated in 1914 by a group of investors who had failed to find oil, but found water instead and eventually decided to develop it into a town. By 2013, its population had grown to 34,658. Sometimes referred to as "90210", one of its primary ZIP codes, it is home to many actors and celebrities. The city includes the Rodeo Drive shopping district and the Beverly Hills Oil Field.
Gaspar de Portolá arrived in the area that would become Beverly Hills on August 3, 1769, travelling along native trails which followed the present-day route of Wilshire Boulevard.
The area was settled by Maria Rita Quinteros de Valdez and her husband in 1828. They called their 4,500 acres (18 km2) of property the Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas. in 1854, she sold the ranch to Benjamin Davis Wilson (1811–1878) and Henry Hancock (1822–1883). By the 1880s, the ranch had been subdivided into parcels of 75 acres (0.30 km2) and was being rapidly bought up by anglos from Los Angeles and the East coast.
A drama school or theatre school is an undergraduate and/or graduate school or department at a college or university; or a free-standing institution (such as the Drama section at the Juilliard School); which specializes in the pre-professional training in drama and theatre arts, such as acting, design and technical theatre, arts administration, and related subjects. If the drama school is part of a degree-granting institution, undergraduates typically take a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, or, occasionally, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Design. Graduate students may take a Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Fine Arts, Doctor of Arts, Doctor of Fine Arts, or Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Entry to drama school is usually through an audition. Some schools make this a two-stage process. Places on an acting course are limited (usually well below 100) so those who fare best at the audition are selected. Most academies state that applicants must be over 18 years of age.
Milton George Katsalas (December 22, 1933 – October 24, 2008) was an American director and producer of stage and film, as well as a famous Hollywood acting instructor and coach who trained under Elia Kazan and Lee Strasberg at the acclaimed Actors Studio in New York City. In 1978 he acquired the Beverly Hills Playhouse, where he taught an exclusive master class for many years.
Katselas was a Scientologist and his acting classes were alleged by some students to have been used as recruitment for the Church of Scientology, while others have stated Katselas never mentioned or spoke about Scientology during classes.
Katselas was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Greek immigrant parents, who owned a small restaurant outside the gates of a Westinghouse Electric plant. When Milton was 14 years old, his father went into the movie theater business and ran a local theater company of Greek actors. Milton Katsalas later adjusted his surname to Katselas.
After high school, he set off for Pittsburgh's Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) to study theater. On a visit to New York, he sneaked in to watch Lee Strasberg's acting class where he also saw renowned director Elia Kazan on the street and chased him down. "I talked to him in Greek, and he talked with me"... [H]e told me, `When you finish college, come see me.'", Katselas recalled. Following graduation in 1954, he began studying with Strasberg and serving as an apprentice to Kazan.
Playhouse is a common Elizabethan term for a theatre, especially those built in London such as The Globe and The Rose.
It is also used as the name for theatres today:
George Clooney talks to James Lipton on "Inside the Actor's Studio" about studying at the Beverly Hills Playhouse Acting School. He talks about the need to practice as an actor. You can't just say you are an actor and do it. You need to work at it. When things go wrong, you need something to fall back on. Acting class provided a great foundation. Michelle Pfeiffer talks to James Lipton on "Inside the Actor's Studio" about studying with Milton Katselas. Michelle Pfeiffer talks about how she studied with Milton Katselas for many years. What she loved about working with Milton was that he prepared actors to be director-proof, and that you learned to be your own director. He would ask "what would you do in this situation?" and then "now what would you really do in that situation?". That was how he got you to second-guess your first, superficial choice. 125A Hyde St., San Francisco, CA 94102 Bryan Callen talks about studying with Milton Katselas and the the Beverly Hills Playhouse. Bryan Callen says that the most important thing that the Beverly Hills Playhouse and Milton Katselas teaches is that attitude monitors talent. Your attitude is what makes a huge difference. He says that you have to learn how to continue to inspire yourself and to fight the cynicism—that's what the Playhouse provides. The bar for artists set at the Playhouse is very high and that's a reflection of Milton Katselas' values. Bryan notes that Milton has worked with some of the best actors, like George C Scott and Bette Davis. When you get up on stage for Milton, he has seen the best, so the bar is set so high. Bryan likes that Milton creates an atmosphere that ...
Autumn talks about how the Beverly Hills Playhouse Acting School focuses on Acting, Attitude, and Administration. She really likes how the Beverly Hills Playhouse addresses the acting business. She never before found a class that trained actors in the business. This is one of her favorite things about the Beverly Hills Playhouse and why she recommends it to people. She doesn't have a religious community, for her her acting class is her community. They are behind her. For the last three years, the BHP focused her and got her back involved with singing, dancing, and painting. And now she has just finished a movie musical. She wonders if the movie would have happened for her had she not been encouraged to go back and do all those things. She loves her life right now. She remembers s...

She says that she will be eternally grateful to Milton. She believes that Milton Katselas at the Beverly Hills Playhouse is the best, most extraordinary teacher in the world. Doris talks about how Milton asked her to play Anatasia a few years ago. She did a lot of research, learned two phrases in Russian, and when she did the scene the class loved it. Milton said it was wonderful, but told Doris that he wanted her to be mythical, and that he didn't like her hair. He asked where "Doris' empress" was. When she redid it, she looked completely different, but it was Doris Roberts' empress of Russi...
Howie Deutch talks about working with Milton Katselas, Kate Hudson and others. He has studied at the Beverly Hills Playhouse for over 25 years. Howie talks about how he did a movie called "My Best Friend's Girl" with Kate Hudson and he was trying to direct her and impress her with big words. And she just said "Why don't you just tell me what you want". And he thought to many classes at the BHP, where he has been studying for 25 years. And he remembered a story Milton had told about when Kate Hudson was studying there. Milton had directed her mom, Goldie Hawn. One morning, Kate was in an ensemble scene and had one line, and during the critique Milton looked at Kate and told her "You're going to be star", and 6 weeks later she was cast in "Almost Famous" and she became a star. Howie says ...
Thaao talks about studying at the Beverly Hills Playhouse with Milton Katselas. Thaao says that what he knows is that with Milton, it works. After 30 years he feels blessed and he feels that he is able to influence, because Milton Katselas happened to be the most important sign post in his life. Thaao believes it is magical. In this computer age where people have a tendency to forget how they should treat each other, the human element is the experience that Milton has given that has paid off so tremendously in the work force. Thaao can do 40 pages and people ask him where he has gotten his acting training because it seems effortless. Thaao says that the magic of the class is not being afraid at the end of the day. The great thing is the foundation that Milton has helped you build, an...

Where I come from isn't all that great
My automobile is a piece of crap
My fashion sense is a little whack
And my friends are just as screwy as me
I didn't go to boarding schools
Preppie girls never looked at me
Why should they?
I ain't nobody
Got nothing in my pocket
Beverly Hills
That's where I want to be
Livin' in Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills
Rollin' like a celebrity
Livin' in Beverly Hills
Look at all those movie stars
They're all so beautiful and clean
When the housemaids scrub the floors
They get the spaces in between
I wanna live a life like that
I wanna be just like a king
Take my picture by the pool
'Cause I'm the next big thing
Beverly Hills
That's where I want to be
Livin' in Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills
Rollin' like a celebrity
Livin' in Beverly Hills
The truth is I don't stand a chance
It's something that you're born into
And I just don't belong
No I don't
I'm just a no class, beat down fool
And I will always be that way
I might as well enjoy my life
And watch the stars play
Beverly Hills
That's where I want to be
