The Drina (Serbian: Дрина, pronounced [drǐːna]) is a 346 kilometer long river, which forms most of the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. It is the longest tributary of the Sava River and the longest karst river in the Dinaric Alps which belongs to the Danube river watershed. Its name is derived from the Latin name of the river (Latin: Drinus) which in turn is derived from Greek (Ancient Greek: Dreinos).

The Drina is formed by the confluence of the Tara and the Piva rivers, both of which flow from Montenegro and converge on the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at Hum and Šćepan Polje villages. The total length of the Tara river is 144 km, of which 110 km are in Montenegro, while the final 34 km are in Bosnia and Herzegovina along which form the border between the two countries in several places. The Drina flows through Bosnia and Herzegovina northward for 346 kilometers, of which 206 kilometers (128 mi) is along the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, and finally spills out into the Sava river near Bosanska Rača village in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Measured from the source of the Tara, its longer headwater, the Drina is 487 kilometers (303 mi) long.

Plot: Royalty from a small European principality come to New York City to arrange for a loan to prop up their country's troubled finances. While the queen mother attends to the negotiations, Princess Drina strikes up a friendship with Tex Donnelly, who owns a nightclub and gives her boogie-woogie piano lessons. When, Tex's star singer, Claire, sprains her ankle, Drina steps in and belts out a few numbers impressing Earl Carroll, a Broadway producer who had come to see Claire perform. Danny Baldwin, Tex's collaborator, thinks that Drina is trying to push Claire out of the show, but reluctantly agrees to substitute for Claire while the singer recovers. Although Drina is engaged to the drunken Grand Duke Paul and Danny and Claire are dating one another, the princess and the night club owner realize they have romantic feelings for one another. When the Queen Mother orders Drina, for the good of her country, to immediately sever all ties with the nightclub without informing her friends, Danny and Tex are forced to put the temperamental Claire back into the lead role of the revue.

Rafting ======= The canyon is part of the Tara River rafting route. The one-day rafting route, from Brstnovica to Sćepan Polje, is 11 mi long and it takes 2 to 3 hours. This part of the canyon is the most exciting because the river has the biggest drop in elevation in the shortest length. There are 21 out of 50 rapids in that part of the Tara. The rapids are Brstanovići, Pećine, the very dangerous Celije rapids and Vjernovički rapids. If one decides to go all the way, rafting adventure is 62 mi long. We took an overnight train from Zagreb in Croatia last night. They had no beds on the train, so we had to sleep in the seats. Didn’t really sleep at all, so I’m pretty tired. But it’s a great day here. We’re going to go check into the hostel and then explore the city after that. Welcome to Sarajevo, Bosnia. It’s a great day here. Yeah. We’re sitting by the Sebiljc Fountain. It’s a meeting point for the locals in Sarajevo, and it’s a drinking fountain. There used to be hundreds of them all over the city, but today there are only a few left. A cool thing about this fountain here is when they first built it, there was no sort of fountain coming out. They had a guy down there sitting there handing out glasses of water as people walked past. I think it’s pretty cool. Now we’re going ot go explore the Turkish Quarter which is a market area just next to the square here and maybe try some Turkish coffee. We’re by the entrance of the Turkish Quarter and they have these teas and coffee sets everywhere all along the street. Looks really nice. This one is probably the biggest one I’ve seen. Check out the details in these pots. It’s just incredible. In the background you can here some tapping going on as well, I’m sure. And these guys are actually making them right now engraving these details. It’s incredible. We’ve walked through the Turkish Quarter. We’ve seen these really cool designed tea pots and tea sets. I think it’s really awesome. They have everything here. The Turkish culture has had a really big influence on the Bosnian way of life. So we’ve ordered some Turkish coffee, it’s smells really strong. It looks really interesting. We’ve got a bit of sugar in there, Turkish delight and some water. So I’m pretty sure you pour this coffee into here. It’s like a little shot of coffee. Like that. Smell it, very strong. And I think you have to mix the sugar. Me and Sofia don’t drink coffee that often, so we’re going to be buzzing for the rest of the day I think. Yeah. It’s kind of crunchy. Taste that? One of the most moving stories from the war for me is the one about the Romeo and Juliet Bridge. It’s about a couple where one was Serbia and one was Bosnian, and they were trying to escape Sarajevo and start a new life together. So they were going to cross this bridge, but then he was shot and killed on the bridge and she was wounded, so she crawled over to his side, put her arms around him and they died there together. I think it’s a really moving story which tells a lot about the war and about the people. Because there’s so many people here, so many families where one was Bosnian and one was Serbian and they were no longer allowed to love each other to be there with each other. I think it’s really sad. And that’s why that bridge has been named the Romeo and Juliet Bridge. We were walking through the streets here in Sarajevo all morning. And it really is such a cute, quaint little city, but as you’re walking down the roads you can’t help but to notice things like this, these massive bullet holes everywhere, on the ground, and the buildings just falling down. All this is evidence from the war that was here in the early 90s. People here really are trying to move on, but you can’t help to notice things like this are dotted all over the city. We’ve walked up to this hill overlooking Sarajevo. It gives you a great view of the city. It’s really nice up here. We’re sitting by one of the biggest cemeteries from the war in the early 90s. It’s a nice place just to come and relax and contemplate. It’s peaceful up here. We’re going to try a traditional Bosnian dessert. What’s is called? It’s called baklava. I’m not exactly sure what it is, but it looks really interesting. It’s sticky and gooey and messy. MMM. It tastes really good though. I think it’s some sort of raising with walnut and pastry. Very sweet.

Poor weather like heavy rain, landslides and flash floods also made it more difficult to get around but overall the road and driving conditions in Serbia were excellent. I definitely want to explore Serbia by car again and I think a minimum of 1-month would be needed. It is 82 kilometers (51 miles) long and is 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) at its deepest, making it the deepest river canyon in Europe. The canyon is protected as a part of Durmitor National Park and is a tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Tara River cuts through the canyon. The Tara River, at its end making confluence with Piva, becomes the Drina, and is some hundred and fifty kilometres long. In its passage through the Tara National Park, the river has a mean fall of 3.6 metres/kilometre, making a host of waterfalls and cascades possible, thus creating with its uniqueness The Montenegrian Colorado. All along its flow, the Tara gets large quantities of water from numerous sources, and quite a few tributaries. The most important tributaries on the left bank of the Tara are Ljutica and Susica, and the most important tributaries on the right bank are Vaskovaska rijeka and Draga. The most important source is the source Bajlovica sige, a source placed on the left bank of the Tara river, giving to the Tara a few hundred litres per second, where the water sourcing from the Bucevica cave falls into the Tara more than thirty metres high, and more than a hundred and fifty metres wide. Very special are the Tara cascades. The roar from the cascades is heard on the very peaks of the canyon. There are more than forty cascades, the most famous being Djavolje lazi, Sokolovina, Bijeli kamen, Gornji tepacki buk, Donji tepacki buk. Because of the quality of its water, and because of its unique ecological system, Tara in 1977 was put into the programme “Covjek i biosfera” (People and Biosphere) and inscribed into the ecological biosphere reservations of the World, being thus protected under an internationally issued convention. There are rocky and pebbly terraces, sandy beaches, high cliffs, and more than 80 large caves along the canyon. Planned hydroelectric dam ===================== The Bosnian and the Montenegrin government initially had plans to flood the Tara Gorge and construct a hydroelectric dam in the Drina River. However, this plan was abandoned in April 2005 after several successful protests of advocates for the preservation of the canyon. In September 2006, a protocol for cooperation between Slovenian company "Petrol" and Montenegrin company "Montenegro-bonus" was signed, and the building of an electric plant with initial power of 40 or 60 megawatts is planned, despite all efforts to protect the gorge. Rafting ======= The canyon is part of the Tara River rafting route. The one-day rafting route, from Brstnovica to Sćepan Polje, is 11 mi long and it takes 2 to 3 hours. This part of the canyon is the most exciting because the river has the biggest drop in elevation in the shortest length. There are 21 out of 50 rapids in that part of the Tara. The rapids are Brstanovići, Pećine, the very dangerous Celije rapids and Vjernovički rapids. If one decides to go all the way, rafting adventure is 62 mi long. At the beginning one will see the waterfalls of Ljutica, then you will pass under the 541 feet high monumental bridge of Tara. Next thing you can see on this exciting journey is the old Roman road and the Lever Tara. "Funjički bukovi" and "Bijele ploče" will make you realise how calm and up to this moment nice Tara becomes a wild beauty. "Nisovo vrelo" is the deepest part of the canyon (3608 feet high). Further is the bottom of the mountain top, "Curevac" (5413 feet), that rises above Tara as its "eternal guardian" and one of the nicest viewpoints of the Durmitor area. In 2005 and 2009, the European Championships in Rafting were held in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republic Srpska) on the Vrbas and Tara rivers. We took an overnight train from Zagreb in Croatia last night. They had no beds on the train, so we had to sleep in the seats. Didn’t really sleep at all, so I’m pretty tired. But it’s a great day here. We’re going to go check into the hostel and then explore the city after that. Welcome to Sarajevo, Bosnia. It’s a great day here. Yeah. We’re sitting by the Sebiljc Fountain. It’s a meeting point for the locals in Sarajevo, and it’s a drinking fountain. There used to be hundreds of them all over the city, but today there are only a few left. A cool thing about this fountain here is when they first built it, there was no sort of fountain coming out. They had a guy down there sitting there handing out glasses of water as people walked past. I think it’s pretty cool. Now we’re going ot go explore the Turkish Quarter which is a market area just next to the square here and maybe try some Turkish coffee. We’re by the entrance of the Turkish Quarter and they have these teas and coffee sets everywhere all along the street. Looks really nice. This one is probably the biggest one I’ve seen. Check out the details in these pots. It’s just incredible. In the background you can here some tapping going on as well, I’m sure. And these guys are actually making them right now engraving these details. It’s incredible. We’ve walked through the Turkish Quarter. We’ve seen these really cool designed tea pots and tea sets. I think it’s really awesome. They have everything here. The Turkish culture has had a really big influence on the Bosnian way of life. So we’ve ordered some Turkish coffee, it’s smells really strong. It looks really interesting. We’ve got a bit of sugar in there, Turkish delight and some water. So I’m pretty sure you pour this coffee into here. It’s like a little shot of coffee. Like that. Smell it, very strong. And I think you have to mix the sugar. Me and Sofia don’t drink coffee that often, so we’re going to be buzzing for the rest of the day I think. Yeah. It’s kind of crunchy. Taste that? One of the most moving stories from the war for me is the one about the Romeo and Juliet Bridge. It’s about a couple where one was Serbia and one was Bosnian, and they were trying to escape Sarajevo and start a new life together. So they were going to cross this bridge, but then he was shot and killed on the bridge and she was wounded, so she crawled over to his side, put her arms around him and they died there together. I think it’s a really moving story which tells a lot about the war and about the people. Because there’s so many people here, so many families where one was Bosnian and one was Serbian and they were no longer allowed to love each other to be there with each other. I think it’s really sad. And that’s why that bridge has been named the Romeo and Juliet Bridge. We were walking through the streets here in Sarajevo all morning. And it really is such a cute, quaint little city, but as you’re walking down the roads you can’t help but to notice things like this, these massive bullet holes everywhere, on the ground, and the buildings just falling down. All this is evidence from the war that was here in the early 90s. People here really are trying to move on, but you can’t help to notice things like this are dotted all over the city. We’ve walked up to this hill overlooking Sarajevo. It gives you a great view of the city. It’s really nice up here. We’re sitting by one of the biggest cemeteries from the war in the early 90s. It’s a nice place just to come and relax and contemplate. It’s peaceful up here. We’re going to try a traditional Bosnian dessert. What’s is called? It’s called baklava. I’m not exactly sure what it is, but it looks really interesting. It’s sticky and gooey and messy. MMM. It tastes really good though. I think it’s some sort of raising with walnut and pastry. Very sweet.

In March I took an 8-day road trip through Central and Southern Serbia. Some of the different places I visited include: Kopaonik Sisevac Mokra Gora Tara National Park Uvac Canyon Zlatibor and the Zlatibor Mountains Sopocani Monastery Stari Ras Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul House on the Drina Bajina Basta Ravanica Monastery Various clips of driving in Serbia Even 8 days wasn't enough to thoroughly explore all of the best regions, cities and natural beauty in Central in Southern Serbia. Poor weather like heavy rain, landslides and flash floods also made it more difficult to get around but overall the road and driving conditions in Serbia were excellent. I definitely want to explore Serbia by car again and I think a minimum of 1-month would be needed. I also would recommend travelling during the summer or fall because in the winter and spring many of the attractions are closed and the weather isn't as ideal. Keep up with me online!
