Every New Year brings a bevy of stupid new nanny state bans.
In Los Angeles supermarket chains can no longer give out free plastic grocery bags made of plastic. From now on, either bring your own or shell out 10 cents per sack.
Illinois -- a state so well-run that is faces billions of dollars in unfunded pension obligations - now bans anyone under the age of 18 from going to a tanning salon. Residents also face a $50 fine for flicking a cigarette butt in the street or on the sidewalk too.
Delaware has banned the sale, possession, or eating of shark fins. New York City has banned horse-drawn carriage rides, and Major Leauge Baseball has banned home plate collisions.
The list is long and grim and seemingly endless but the worst nanny state ban going into effect in 2014 is almost surely the federal prohibition on the production of new incandescent light bulbs.
This ban was seven years in the making. The 2007 Energy Bill -- enthusiastically signed by then President George W Bush -- effectively killed incandescents light bulbs via energy efficiency mandates. 100 and 75 watt bulbs were phased out in previous years and now cheap 60 and 40 light bulbs -- once the very symbol of a good idea -- verboten in the Land of the Free.
Before the incandescent bulbs go out for good, it's worth shining a light on its cause: The ban was pushed by light bulb makers eager to up-sell customers on longer-lasting and much more expensive halogen, compact fluourescent, and LED lighting. When customers balked at paying more for home lighting, General Electric, Sylvania, and Philips did what corporate behemoths always do: They turned to the government for regulation that rigs the market in their favor.
So when you throw out that last 40 cent 40 Watt light bulb, remember that you're not just tossing out a piece of history, but a piece of what used to be a freer market.

A light bulb is a simple apparatus that converts electric energy into light energy. The law of conservation of energy says that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it simply changes form. A light bulb is able to take the the electricity supplied to it and change its form into something that can be used for illumination.
A bulb is made up of a positive and a negative terminal embedded inside glass with a tungsten filament that joins the two. When electricity is supplied to the terminals, the flow of electrons heats up the thin filament in between. The electrons continue to bang against the filament until it heats up to the point that it begins to glow. This process happens extremely quickly.
The filament is encased inside transparent glass to let the light shine through and also to protect it from overheating. The air inside the glass is actually a small amount of inert gas that helps prevent the filament from becoming too hot and breaking. When the light bulb has fused it means that the thin coil inside has snapped and therefore electricity cannot flow completely through the circuit.

Incandescent light bulb
An incandescent light bulb, incandescent lamp or incandescent light globe is an electric light with a wire filament heated to a high temperature, by passing an electric current through it, until it glows with visible light (incandescence). The hot filament is protected from oxidation with a glass or quartz bulb that is filled with inert gas or evacuated. In a halogen lamp, filament evaporation is prevented by a chemical process that redeposits metal vapor onto the filament, extending its life. The light bulb is supplied with electric current by feed-through terminals or wires embedded in the glass. Most bulbs are used in a socket which provides mechanical support and electrical connections.
Incandescent bulbs are manufactured in a wide range of sizes, light output, and voltage ratings, from 1.5 volts to about 300 volts. They require no external regulating equipment, have low manufacturing costs, and work equally well on either alternating current or direct current. As a result, the incandescent lamp is widely used in household and commercial lighting, for portable lighting such as table lamps, car headlamps, and flashlights, and for decorative and advertising lighting.

Lamp (electrical component)
A lamp is a replaceable component that produces light from electricity. Compact lamps are commonly called light bulbs; for example, the incandescent light bulb. Lamps usually have a base made of ceramic, metal, glass or plastic, which secures the lamp in the socket of a light fixture. The electrical connection to the socket may be made with a screw-thread base, two metal pins, two metal caps or a bayonet cap.
Types
There are several types of lamp:
- Halogen lamps use a fused quartz envelope, filled with halogen gas
- Xenon arc lamp
- Mercury-xenon arc lamp
- Ultra-high-performance lamp, an ultra-high-pressure mercury-vapor arc lamp for use in projectors
- Metal-halide lamp

Every New Year brings a bevy of stupid new nanny state bans.
In Los Angeles supermarket chains can no longer give out free plastic grocery bags made of plastic. From now on, either bring your own or shell out 10 cents per sack.
Illinois -- a state so well-run that is faces billions of dollars in unfunded pension obligations - now bans anyone under the age of 18 from going to a tanning salon. Residents also face a $50 fine for flicking a cigarette butt in the street or on the sidewalk too.
Delaware has banned the sale, possession, or eating of shark fins. New York City has banned horse-drawn carriage rides, and Major Leauge Baseball has banned home plate collisions.
The list is long and grim and seemingly endless but the worst nanny state ban going into effect in 2014 is almost surely the federal prohibition on the production of new incandescent light bulbs.
This ban was seven years in the making. The 2007 Energy Bill -- enthusiastically signed by then President George W Bush -- effectively killed incandescents light bulbs via energy efficiency mandates. 100 and 75 watt bulbs were phased out in previous years and now cheap 60 and 40 light bulbs -- once the very symbol of a good idea -- verboten in the Land of the Free.
Before the incandescent bulbs go out for good, it's worth shining a light on its cause: The ban was pushed by light bulb makers eager to up-sell customers on longer-lasting and much more expensive halogen, compact fluourescent, and LED lighting. When customers balked at paying more for home lighting, General Electric, Sylvania, and Philips did what corporate behemoths always do: They turned to the government for regulation that rigs the market in their favor.
So when you throw out that last 40 cent 40 Watt light bulb, remember that you're not just tossing out a piece of history, but a piece of what used to be a freer market.

A light bulb is a simple apparatus that converts electric energy into light energy. The law of conservation of energy says that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it simply changes form. A light bulb is able to take the the electricity supplied to it and change its form into something that can be used for illumination.
A bulb is made up of a positive and a negative terminal embedded inside glass with a tungsten filament that joins the two. When electricity is supplied to the terminals, the flow of electrons heats up the thin filament in between. The electrons continue to bang against the filament until it heats up to the point that it begins to glow. This process happens extremely quickly.
The filament is encased inside transparent glass to let the light shine through and also to protect it from overheating. The air inside the glass is actually a small amount of inert gas that helps prevent the filament from becoming too hot and breaking. When the light bulb has fused it means that the thin coil inside has snapped and therefore electricity cannot flow completely through the circuit.

Every New Year brings a bevy of stupid new nanny state bans.
In Los Angeles supermarket chains can no longer give out free plastic grocery bags made of plastic. From now on, either bring your own or shell out 10 cents per sack.
Illinois -- a state so well-run that is faces billions of dollars in unfunded pension obligations - now bans anyone under the age of 18 from going to a tanning salon. Residents also face a $50 fine for flicking a cigarette butt in the street or on the sidewalk too.
Delaware has banned the sale, possession, or eating of shark fins. New York City has banned horse-drawn carriage rides, and Major Leauge Baseball has banned home plate collisions.
The list is long and grim and seemingly endless but the worst nanny state ban going into effect in 2014 is almost surely the federal prohibition on the production of new incandescent light bulbs.
This ban was seven years in the making. The 2007 Energy Bill -- enthusiastically signed by then President George W Bush -- effectively killed incandescents light bulbs via energy efficiency mandates. 100 and 75 watt bulbs were phased out in previous years and now cheap 60 and 40 light bulbs -- once the very symbol of a good idea -- verboten in the Land of the Free.
Before the incandescent bulbs go out for good, it's worth shining a light on its cause: The ban was pushed by light bulb makers eager to up-sell customers on longer-lasting and much more expensive halogen, compact fluourescent, and LED lighting. When customers balked at paying more for home lighting, General Electric, Sylvania, and Philips did what corporate behemoths always do: They turned to the government for regulation that rigs the market in their favor.
So when you throw out that last 40 cent 40 Watt light bulb, remember that you're not just tossing out a piece of history, but a piece of what used to be a freer market.

A light bulb is a simple apparatus that converts electric energy into light energy. The law of conservation of energy says that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it simply changes form. A light bulb is able to take the the electricity supplied to it and change its form into something that can be used for illumination.
A bulb is made up of a positive and a negative terminal embedded inside glass with a tungsten filament that joins the two. When electricity is supplied to the terminals, the flow of electrons heats up the thin filament in between. The electrons continue to bang against the filament until it heats up to the point that it begins to glow. This process happens extremely quickly.
The filament is encased inside transparent glass to let the light shine through and also to protect it from overheating. The air inside the glass is actually a small amount of inert gas that helps prevent the filament from becoming too hot and breaking. When the light bulb has fused it means that the thin coil inside has snapped and therefore electricity cannot flow completely through the circuit.
