The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO) is a national trade union center and the largest federation of unions in the United States. It is made up of fifty-six national and international unions, together representing more than 12 million active and retired workers. The AFL-CIO is one of the highest-spending and most politically active unions.
The AFL-CIO was formed in 1955 when the AFL and the CIO merged after a long estrangement. Membership in the union peaked in 1979, when the AFL-CIO had nearly twenty million members. From 1955 until 2005, the AFL–CIO's member unions represented nearly all unionized workers in the United States. Several large unions split away from AFL–CIO and formed the rival Change to Win Federation in 2005 but a number of those unions have since re-affiliated. The largest union currently in the AFL–CIO is the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), with approximately 1.4 million members.

Woodstock for Bernie volunteers present: A Labor Day Celebration
How did Labor Day come to be and what is so significant about the Pullman neighborhood in Chicago and the little town of Wooodstock, IL? These place represent the birth of Labor Day in the United States after 30+ workers were killed by American soldiers- all for standing up for their rights. Learn about our history and why it happened and how the struggle we have today is very much like the ones our grandparents and great grandparents faced head on.
SPEAKERS:
"Patrick Murfin is a lifelong labor and social justice activist. As a young man he was a member of the Industrial Workers of the World, the historic militant labor union known as the Wobblies. He served them in many capacities including as an organizer, speaker, editor of the Industrial Worker, and General Secretary Treasurer. He has lived in McHenry County for more than 30 years where he has been a fixture and sometimes the face of numerous social justice causes. He was a co-founder of the Diversity Day Festival here on the square and hosted the event for 11 of the 13 years it was held. Patrick was also active in the Democratic Party of McHenry County retiring last year after nearly 30 years as a Precinct Representative and was a former party Secretary and Chair. Since 2005 he has maintained the labor blog Heretic, Rebel, a Thing to Flout where he frequently writes about labor history, social justice, and the Woodstock and McHenry County community."
"Mark Burrows has worked in the railroad industry for over 40 years, most of that time as a locomotive engineer. For years he has advocated for the rail unions to unite in a counter-offensive against the carriers' attacks on safety, working conditions ,dignity as well as quality of life on and off the job .As the delegate representing his Local 1433 of the Transportation Division of the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Union at the last two international conventions, he has taken that fight to the national level, getting a favorable response to his vision and ideals. Mark is on the steering committee of Railroad Workers United, which is a cross-craft caucus of rail labor activists across North America.'Quoting from their quarterly newsletter, 'The Highball': 'RWU grew out of decades of struggle within the craft unions for unity, solidarity and democracy. We are carrying on a tradition of rank-and-file activity which dates back to the 1890's and the time of Eugene V. Debs.'
Tony Casalino. Past Past President of McHenry County Federation of Teachers, Currently President of the MCFT Retiree Council, and Executive Board of Illinois Federation of Teachers and Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans.
Tim Jackson, Tim is a retired airline captain, a Vietnam veteran, and a delegate for the Northeastern Illinois Federation of Labor AFL-CIO.

President Barack Obama Delivers Remarks at the White House Summit on Worker Voice
Union officials, activists and labor movement allies gathered at the White House on Wednesday for what Barack Obama’s administration heralded as a landmark summit on the future of work. The president’s stated aim: to determine how American labor relations should evolve in the face of a changing economy.
“We’re here today to think about where do we go next,” he said at the White House Summit on Worker Voice. “What does the next generation of American jobs look like? How do we make sure those jobs reward hard work?”
The Obama administration has become more aggressive during his second term in wielding its executive authority on behalf of labor unions. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has been particularly active, delivering a string of labor-friendly rulings and policy announcements over the past two years.
But the White House’s pivot toward unionism has not mollified some of its critics in organized labor, who feel they were ignored during his first term. Also, labor leaders are incensed by the president’s embrace of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a trade deal they believe will cause relatively high-wage American jobs to move overseas.
The TPP deal was finalized Monday, making for awkward timing with the Worker Voice summit. One labor leader, International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers President Greg Junemann, declined to attend the summit because of his anger over the pact.
But labor leader attendance at the summit was nonetheless healthy; guests included Richard Trumka, the president of the labor federation AFL-CIO, and Lee Saunders, the president of the government employee union AFSCME. And Obama said during his speech that he was eager to hear proposals for how such labor organizations could be bolstered.
