Nostalgia Critic

Nostalgia Critic is an American comedy webseries created, written, edited, directed and performed by Doug Walker. The series initially launched on YouTube in July 2007 before moving to Walker's own site That Guy with the Glasses, then to Channel Awesome. The show follows Walker as the titular Nostalgia Critic, a bitter and sarcastic film critic who reviews films and television shows from his childhood and recent past, usually with comically exaggerated rage. The show often alternates the Critic's angry rants and juvenile humor with legitimate analysis of the episode's subject.

Walker briefly retired the series in August 2012 to work on other projects, even writing the character out of existence in the Channel Awesome film To Boldly Flee. However, on January 23, 2013, Walker announced the show's imminent return in a narrative video called "The Review Must Go On". The show subsequently returned with a more narrative and sketch-driven sixth season, beginning on February 5, 2013 with a review of The Odd Life of Timothy Green.

Nostalgia Critic is a web review series hosted by Doug Walker. The series began in July 2007 on YouTube, but after the website removed several episodes due to alleged copyright violations, the series was moved in April 2008 to Walker's own humor website, That Guy with the Glasses, where it was hosted until late 2014, when it was moved to ChannelAwesome.com. Most episodes center on comedic bashings of movies and serials that Walker finds to be poorly written, badly acted, and typically panned by critics—particularly Siskel and Ebert, whom Doug openly acknowledges as his favorite critics. Not all of his reviews are negative, as he sometimes finds positive aspects and even praises some films and TV shows (sometimes for their hamminess/bad production). The series also features several "Top 11 Countdown" segments, which Doug does as opposed to the traditional "Top 10" because he, in his own words, "Like(s) to go one step beyond", as well as a series of "Old vs. New" segments, where The Critic compares iconic films like Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, True Grit, Batman, The Karate Kid, King Kong, and Spider-Man with their respective modern-day reboots/remakes and levies to discover which is the better film.

Nostalgia

Nostalgia is a sentimentality for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations. The word nostalgia is a learned formation of a Greek compound, consisting of νόστος (nóstos), meaning "homecoming", a Homeric word, and ἄλγος (álgos), meaning "pain, ache", and was coined by a 17th-century medical student to describe the anxieties displayed by Swiss mercenaries fighting away from home. Described as a medical condition—a form of melancholy—in the Early Modern period, it became an important trope in Romanticism.

Nostalgia can refer to a general interest in the past, its personalities, and events, especially the "good old days" from one's earlier life.

The scientific literature on nostalgia usually refers to nostalgia regarding the personal life and has mainly studied the effects of nostalgia induced during the studies.Smell and touch are strong evokers of nostalgia due to the processing of these stimuli first passing through the amygdala, the emotional seat of the brain. These recollections of one's past are usually important events, people one cares about, and places where one has spent time. Music and weather can also be strong triggers of nostalgia. Nostalgic preferences, the belief that the past was better than is the present, has been linked to biases in memory.

Top Five is a 2014 American comedy film written and directed by Chris Rock. The film, which stars Rock, Rosario Dawson, and Gabrielle Union, was screened in the Special Presentations section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. The movie follows New York City comedian and film star Andre Allen (Rock), who has to confront his past and comedic career while doing an interview with journalist Chelsea Brown (Dawson). The film was released on December 12, 2014, by Paramount Pictures.

Plot

New York Times reporter Chelsea Brown is spending a day interviewing comedian and recovering alcoholic Andre Allen, star of the hit film franchise Hammy The Bear, about a cop in a bear suit. He is attempting a foray into serious films with Uprize, in which he portrays Haitian Revolution figure Dutty Boukman, and sensitive to criticism, particularly by Times critic James Nielson, whose previous reviews of Andre's work have been negative and insulting. As the interview begins in his limousine, Andre recalls his lowest point, when he was in Houston in 2003 and met Jazzy Dee, who supplied him with drugs, alcohol and women. Yet after Jazzy refused to pay the women, they contended they were raped, leading to Andre's arrest.
