The entire version of a Short Tribute to the Marlon Brando of Flanders: Belgian actor Julien Schoenaerts. Directed & produced by Rudolf Mestdagh.
Father and son rehearsing the play "The Little Prince" in 1987, in Belgium. Matthias was 9 years old at the time. Julien played The Aviator and was also the director. Matthias' mother, Dominique Wiche, was the costume designer of the play.
Julien Schoenaerts said this about the play to Humo: "I have many beautiful things in my life, but 'The Little Prince' is my dearest. Not only because it was such a beautiful play, but mostly because I've played together with Matthias."

This pessimistic urban drama tells the story of a tormented man (Julien Schoenaerts) who wanders around in the cosmopolitan port city of Antwerp. Only three people seem to understand him, an orphan and two disillusioned women. Black-and-white images and the intelligent use of symbols like desolate industrial sites and abandoned docks, are the strenght of this expressive tragedy. With this film, aesthetics was introduced into Flemish films. It was the beginning of a serious, fully-formed cinema.

Verf.Ed. uses his pocket camera as a photographic scrapbook of his life and thoughts. This is not Art photography, in fact, despite of the photographic surface, this isn't photography. It's the need to survive and to capture life and thoughts before they explode. Verf. hasn't the time to make compositions or to think about techniques, the subjects are passing by at the speed that he hardly can capture them. His photographic production is huge. That makes it impossible to judge them. While judging them you are judging life...
Through and in the work of Verf., the journey becomes more and more intimate and personal.
The visitor is invited to experience the explicit tension between the private and the public space.
The literal space becomes a metaphor for a social context nearly one hundred years after T.S.Eliot.
Verf.s photographs are confronting and autobiographical and show the inside of daily life.
In the installation Life at last on the bright side of life, the visitor becomes a voyeur and discovers a curious piece of Waste Land.

Mijn moederke, ik kan het niet verkroppen

Het Huwelijk
Toen hij bespeurde hoe de nevel van de tijd
in d'ogen van zijn vrouw de vonken uit kwam doven,

Een radio-opname uit de jaren 70.
Dit gedicht komt uit Gezelles 'Rijmsnoer'.
Het gedicht bestaat eigenlijk uit vijf strofen. Hier werden er maar vier gebracht en persoonlijk vind ik dat niet slecht want de vijfde strofe is slechts een hulde aan de 'Vlaamsche ouden tsjok' en heeft niet de spankracht van de andere vier strofen.
Enkele West-Vlaamse woorden en uitdrukkingen toegelicht:
uitgestroopten arm = uitgestrekte arm
afgeknuist = afgeknot
onbestaande vuist = de indruk wekkend van een vuist
menschenbouw = menselijke gedaante
wangedaantenis = gedrocht

Dit gedicht komt uit Gezelles bundel 'Gedichten, Gezangen en Gebeden en Kleengedichtjes'. Hij droeg die op aan de Nederlander Alberdingk Thijm (1820-1889).
De opdracht zelf is een gedicht op zich en luidt;

Dit gedicht van Jan Hendrik Leopold (1865-1925) wordt hier gelezen door de destijds in Vlaanderen en Nederland overbekende acteur Julien Schoenaerts (1925-2006), vader van acteur Matthias Schoenaerts die nu ook meer dan bekend is. Julien Schoenaerts wordt beschouwd als een van de grootste naoorlogse acteurs in Vlaanderen.
De opname die hier te horen is dateert van rond 1970 en werd destijds uitgezonden op de VRT-radio en opgenomen op geluidscassette. Later volgen er nog meer fragmenten.

Paul van Ostaijen
Paul van Ostaijen (22 February 1896 – 18 March 1928) was a Belgian poet and writer.
Nickname
Van Ostaijen was born in Antwerp. His nickname was Mister 1830, derived from his habit of walking along the streets of Antwerp clothed as a dandy from that year.
His poetry shows influences from Modernism, Expressionism, Dadaism and early Surrealism, but Van Ostaijen's style is very much his own.
Flamingant
Van Ostaijen was an active flamingant, a supporter of Flemish independence. Because of his involvement with Flemish activism during World War I, he had to flee to Berlin after the war. In Berlin—one of the centers of Dadaism and Expressionism—he met many other artists. He also struggled through a severe mental crisis.
Upon returning to Belgium, Van Ostaijen opened an art gallery in Brussels. He died of tuberculosis in 1928 in a sanatorium in Miavoye-Anthée, in the Wallonian Ardennes.
The Czech poet Ivan Wernisch was so impressed by "the genius of van Ostaijen" that he learned Dutch to be able to translate him. His translation was published as Tanec gnómů, Dance of the gnomes, in 1990.

Father and son rehearsing the play "The Little Prince" in 1987, in Belgium. Matthias was 9 years old at the time. Julien played The Aviator and was also the director. Matthias' mother, Dominique Wiche, was the costume designer of the play. Julien Schoenaerts said this about the play to Humo: "I have many beautiful things in my life, but 'The Little Prince' is my dearest. Not only because it was such a beautiful play, but mostly because I've played together with Matthias."

Een radio-opname uit de jaren 70. Dit gedicht komt uit Gezelles 'Rijmsnoer'. Het gedicht bestaat eigenlijk uit vijf strofen. Hier werden er maar vier gebracht en persoonlijk vind ik dat niet slecht want de vijfde strofe is slechts een hulde aan de 'Vlaamsche ouden tsjok' en heeft niet de spankracht van de andere vier strofen. Dit gedicht komt uit Gezelles bundel 'Gedichten, Gezangen en Gebeden en Kleengedichtjes'. Hij droeg die op aan de Nederlander Alberdingk Thijm (1820-1889). De opdracht zelf is een gedicht op zich en luidt; Opdracht aan mijn weledelen Heer Mr. Jos. A. Alberdingk Thijm O. EQ. S. GR. M. De broederhand uit Vlanderland zij u gereikt, o edele taal- en stamvoortreder; en, reikt gij, Noorderling, mij, Zuiderling, die weder, in stam- en taalondeelbaarheid, dan zij u driemaal dank gezeid en ligg' dit, qualecumque, als pandgift daarop neder! Mei 1862 Guido Gezelle Thijm was een katholiek en daarom wellicht verwaardigde Gezelle zich zijn werk aan een Nederlander op te dragen. Julien Schoenaerts wordt beschouwd als een van de grootste naoorlogse acteurs in Vlaanderen. De opname die hier te horen is dateert van rond 1970 en werd destijds uitgezonden op de VRT-radio en opgenomen op geluidscassette. Later volgen er nog meer fragmenten.

Het Huwelijk
Toen hij bespeurde hoe de nevel van de tijd
in d'ogen van zijn vrouw de vonken uit kwam doven,
haar wangen had verweerd, haar voorhoofd had doorkloven
toen wendde hij zich af en vrat zich op van spijt.
Hij vloekte en ging te keer en trok zich bij de baard
en mat haar met de blik, maar kon niet meer begeren,
hij zag de grootse zonde in duivelsplicht verkeren
en hoe zij tot hem opkeek als een stervend paard.

Met de simpelste bewoordingen weet hij een wereld te creëren van de ene keer liefde en trouw, een andere keer dompelt hij ons onder in de natuur en ook, zoals hier, geeft hij soms zijn diepste gevoelens van eenzaamheid weer. Het gedicht wordt gelezen door wijlen Julien Schoenaerts, één van de beste acteurs die Vlaanderen na de oorlog gekend heeft.
