THE Princes Highway east of Sale will receive a $50 million funding boost under a re-elected Liberal-National federal government, enabling safety upgrades and establishing a safer route for commuters in east Gippsland.
Gippsland MHR and Infrastructure and Transport Minister Darren Chester announced the federal government would allocate $25 million to the Princes Highway, to be matched dollar-for-dollar with the state government.
Mr Chester said significant remediation works were needed along sections of the highway.
"This announcement is a significant win that will deliver safety and productivity benefits. We know that building better roads can not only change lives, it can save lives," Mr Chester said.
"I challenge the state government to fully match this commitment and help save lives on our roads."
Mr Chester said the works package includes $1.2 million to support a heavy vehicle rest area and a new roundabout in the centre of Cann River.
"Our funding commitment will help get the project off the ground, with funding contributions from the state government, council and private sector to upgrade and improve heavy vehicle access to the service station," Mr Chester said.
