Government forces, backed by the Russian military, who recaptured Palmyra on Sunday, say they will use the ancient city as a base to launch more attacks against the Islamic State group (IS).
The Unesco World Heritage site was occupied by the group for 10 months.
Footage from inside the site shows that much of it is still standing, although there is also extensive damage.

The concert “Pray for Palmyra. Music revives ancient remains” by Russian conductor Valeri Gergiev is scheduled to go ahead in Palmyra, Syria on Thursday, May 5. It will open with a welcome address by the conductor. Russian President Vladimir Putin will also make an appearance via video link. Consecutive translation from Russian to English and Arabic will be provided for both.
The date of the concert coincides with the handover for burial of the remains of special forces officer Aleksander Prokhorenko, dubbed the ‘Russian Rambo,’ who died after ordering an airstrike on his own position after he was surrounded by IS fighters. His remains will depart Moscow for his home village of Gorodky, Orenburg Region, where they will be buried in a ceremony with military honours.
In April, Palmyra was recaptured by the Syrian Army from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). Russian air strikes provided support to the Syrian armed forces in their re-taking of the town.

This is a tribute to all the brave soldiers who fought to defeat ISIS in Palmyra. For the Syrian, Russian soldiers and all our allies, thank you for your bravery and your sacrifice.
The clip at the end is an old Syrian TV show about Ancient Palmyra, and Queen of Syria at the time Zenobia who resisted the roman empire. This is why Palmyra were 'ruins' not due to time alone but do to war an invasion. And yes i think it has applications for today.

Im Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt bereitet eine illustre Runde aus Radarexperten, Geophysikern, Astrophysikern und Archäologen einen Versuch vor, den es so zuvor noch nicht gegeben hat. Mit dem neu entwickelten Radarsatelliten TerraSAR-X wollen die Wissenschaftler des DLR vom All aus eine Siedlung erfassen, die in der syrischen Oasenstadt Palmyra unterm Wüstensand verborgen liegt. Die versunkene Stätte ist seit über 30 Jahren das Lieblingsobjekt des Archäologen Professor Schmidt-Colinet. Bei einer seiner Grabungen entdeckte er ein weitläufiges Gebäude, das sich als vorzeitliches Geschäftszentrum entpuppte. Im so genannten Khan wurden Waren aus aller Herren Länder gehandelt: Seide aus China, Indigo aus Indien, Wein aus Rhodos oder auch Oliven aus dem fernen Spanien. Seit seinem Fund ist Schmidt-Colinet davon überzeugt, dass die Anlage Teil einer Stadt war, die aus unbekannter Ursache plötzlich aufgegeben wurde. Der Komplex muss viel älter als das Palmyra sein, das heute Tausende von Touristen in die Gluthitze Syriens lockt. Der Erdbeobachtungssatellit des DLR soll aus über 500 Kilometer Höhe Daten liefern, die Aufschluss über das mysteriöse Schicksal der verborgenen Siedlung geben.
Das fruchtbare Palmyra mitten in der Wüste weckte die Begehrlichkeiten vieler Großmächte der Antike. Die Oase lag strategisch außerordentlich günstig an der Hauptkarawanenroute zwischen Euphrat und Mittelmeer. Niemand kam an ihr vorbei, denn dort gab es Wasser und Lebensmittel im Überfluss. Die Fürsten nutzten ihre Position aus, erhoben saftige Zölle und machten den Ort zu einem florierenden Umschlagplatz für den Fernhandelsverkehr. Die Ruinen der Prachtstraßen, Tempel, Theater und öffentlichen Gebäude zeugen noch heute von der einstigen Blüte der antiken Wirtschaftsmetropole. Das änderte sich auch nicht, als die Römer ihre Hand in Richtung Alten Orient ausstreckten und Palmyra zur Provinz mit einer eigenen Garnison machten. Im Gegenteil: Die Palmyrener arrangierten sich mit den Herren vom Tiber, kämpften mit ihnen Seite an Seite gegen übermächtige Gegner und wurden dabei immer reicher. Erst die ehrgeizige Fürstin Zenobia, eine Frau von betörender Schönheit und großem Stolz, beging einen strategischen Fehler, der die Römer zum Feldzug gegen den eigenen Vasallen zwingt.

Palmyra
Palmyra (/ˌpælˈmaɪrə/; Aramaic: ܬܕܡܘܪܬܐ Tedmurtā ; Arabic: تدمر Tadmor) is an ancient Semitic city in present-day Homs Governorate, Syria. Archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic period and the city was first documented in the early second millennium BC. Palmyra changed hands on a number of occasions between different empires, before becoming a subject of the Roman Empire in the first century AD.
The city grew wealthy from trade caravans; the Palmyrenes, renowned merchants, established colonies along the Silk Road and operated throughout the Roman Empire. Palmyra's wealth enabled the construction of monumental projects, such as the Great Colonnade, the Temple of Bel and the distinctive tower tombs. The Palmyrenes were a mix of Amorites, Arameans and Arabs. The city's social structure was tribal, and its inhabitants spoke Palmyrene (a dialect of Aramaic); Greek was used for commercial and diplomatic purposes. The culture of Palmyra, influenced by Greco-Roman culture, produced distinctive art and architecture that combined eastern and western traditions. The city's inhabitants worshiped local deities and Mesopotamian and Arab gods.

Die Oase lag strategisch außerordentlich günstig an der Hauptkarawanenroute zwischen Euphrat und Mittelmeer. Niemand kam an ihr vorbei, denn dort gab es Wasser und Lebensmittel im Überfluss. Die Fürsten nutzten ihre Position aus, erhoben saftige Zölle und machten den Ort zu einem florierenden Umschlagplatz für den Fernhandelsverkehr. Die Ruinen der Prachtstraßen, Tempel, Theater und öffentlichen Gebäude zeugen noch heute von der einstigen Blüte der antiken Wirtschaftsmetropole. Das änderte sich auch nicht, als die Römer ihre Hand in Richtung Alten Orient ausstreckten und Palmyra zur Provinz mit einer eigenen Garnison machten. Das antike Palmyra gehört zu den bedeutesten Ausgrabungsstätten Syriens und steht auf der Liste des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes. Die Siedlung, Tempel und Gräber decken weitläufiges Areal ab. Wir hatten bei unserer Reise mit Eberhardt TRAVEL einen Tag Zeit, ein paar Eindrücke zu gewinnen. Wir schlenderten über die Kolonadenstraße, sahen das Theater, besuchten einen Grabturm und ein unterirdisches Grab. Besonders beeindruckend war der Tempel des Baal. Zum Abschluss hatten wir einen wunderbaren Blick von der Burg, die mit rund 700 Jahren in dieser Gegend eher ein junges Gebäude ist. Palmyra war übrigens eine Oasenstadt, die aus mehrere Quellen gespeist wurde. Leider ist inzwischen auch die letzte Quelle versiegt. Das Grün zieht sich langsam zurück. First time entering this City, my wife thinking about Movie Wax House.. so spooky. no body around and we are really happy when first time saw a group of tourist. finally a break ahhhhhh.. even to find petrol station I have to go to the corner of city...but very small petrol station...and spooky also. Palmyra or Tadmur in arabic. I found is more interesting than Jerash in Jordan. huge complex of Roman city and building stand still. no entrance fee to the site. just move your vehicle all around the site freely only some guide and sales man going around try to get some money from you. hope you enjoy some photo from just 3 hour of our journey visiting this city before we head toward allepo to turkey Background music is "Kota Mati" meaning dead city from peterpan, indonesia...

Palmyra is an ancient Semitic city in present-day Homs Governorate, Syria. Archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic period, and the city was first documented in the early second millennium BC.
An oasis in the Syrian desert, north-east of Damascus, Palmyra contains the monumental ruins of a great city that was one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world. From the 1st to the 2nd century, the art and architecture of Palmyra, standing at the crossroads of several civilizations, married Graeco-Roman techniques with local traditions and Persian influences.

Das antike Palmyra gehört zu den bedeutesten Ausgrabungsstätten Syriens und steht auf der Liste des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes. Die Siedlung, Tempel und Gräber decken weitläufiges Areal ab. Wir hatten bei unserer Reise mit Eberhardt TRAVEL einen Tag Zeit, ein paar Eindrücke zu gewinnen. Wir schlenderten über die Kolonadenstraße, sahen das Theater, besuchten einen Grabturm und ein unterirdisches Grab. Besonders beeindruckend war der Tempel des Baal. Zum Abschluss hatten wir einen wunderbaren Blick von der Burg, die mit rund 700 Jahren in dieser Gegend eher ein junges Gebäude ist. Palmyra war übrigens eine Oasenstadt, die aus mehrere Quellen gespeist wurde. Leider ist inzwischen auch die letzte Quelle versiegt. Das Grün zieht sich langsam zurück. even to find petrol station I have to go to the corner of city...but very small petrol station...and spooky also.
Palmyra or Tadmur in arabic. I found is more interesting than Jerash in Jordan.
huge complex of Roman city and building stand still.
no entrance fee to the site. just move your vehicle all around the site freely
only some guide and sales man going around try to get some money from you.
