The United States Armed Forces are the federal military forces of the United States. They consist of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The President of the United States is the military's overall head, and helps form military policy with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), a federal executive department, acting as the principal organ by which military policy is carried out.
From the time of its inception, the military played a decisive role in the history of the United States. A sense of national unity and identity was forged as a result of victory in the First Barbary War and the Second Barbary War. Even so, the Founders were suspicious of a permanent military force. It played an important role in the American Civil War, where leading generals on both sides were picked from members of the United States military. Not until the outbreak of World War II did a large standing army become officially established. The National Security Act of 1947, adopted following World War II and during the Cold War's onset, created the modern U.S. military framework; the Act merged previously Cabinet-level Department of War and the Department of the Navy into the National Military Establishment (renamed the Department of Defense in 1949), headed by the Secretary of Defense; and created the Department of the Air Force and National Security Council.
American(s) may refer to:
A troop is a military sub-subunit, originally a small formation of cavalry, subordinate to a squadron. In many armies a troop is the equivalent element to the infantry section or platoon. Exceptions are the Royal Horse Artillery and the US Cavalry, where troops are subunits that compare to an infantry company or artillery battery.
A cavalry soldier of private rank is called a trooper in many Commonwealth armies (abbreviated "Tpr", not to be confused with "trouper").
A related sense of the term "troops" refers to members of the military collectively, as in "the troops"; see Troop (disambiguation).
In some countries, like Italy, the company-level cavalry unit is called "Squadron".
Today, a troop is defined differently in different armed forces.
In the Australian Army a troop is the equivalent of a platoon sized element in units of certain corps, those being:

News broke today that a small number of US Special Forces are already on their way to Syria to help against ISIS. Will they be fighting ISIS directly? Or just training locals? John Iadarola (Think Tank), Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show Podcast), Cara Santa Maria (Talk Nerdy), and Elliot Hill (The Lip TV), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. "Barack Obama has ordered up to 50 special operations troops to Syria, US officials announced on Friday, in an apparent breach of a promise not to put US “boots on the ground” to fight Islamic State militants in the country... But the White House insisted that its overall strategy to combat Isis remained the same and said the special forces troops would be helping coordinate local ground fo...

The Pentagon says three fully manned combat brigades will be deployed on a continuous basis from next year. The US military says the plan demonstrates a strong approach to reassuring US allies in the face of an aggressive Russia. Relations between Russia and the West have soured in recent years over the conflict in Ukraine and the war in Syria. Moscow has accused NATO and the US of using the Ukraine crisis as a pretext to move closer to Russian borders. U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan mark the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
Another 446 U.S. troops have arrived in Iraq within the past week, all part of the troop increase announced by the Obama administration in July. Their arrival suggests that the battle to retake Mosul will happen soon, and reporters pressed for a timeline at Thursday's Pentagon briefing. The spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve, Air Force Col. John Dorrian, told reporters there were 4,000 U.S. troops in Iraq last week and now the number is 4,460. The maximum number authorized by President Obama is 4640, Dorrian said. "I can tell you that there's a tremendous amount of work going on for training," Dorrian said. "There's a tremendous amount of work going on to set conditions, including the logistics detail that would be required, in order to go after Mosul. And then we continue to hammer ...

"Complete disarmament" of the American people Paul Joseph Watson Infowars.com Monday, July 16, 2012 The UN Arms Trade Treaty that has been identified by observers as a flagrant threat to the second amendment and which Barack Obama is determined to sign has its roots in a 1961 State Department memorandum which explains how the United Nations will oversee "complete disarmament" of the American people under the ruse of preventing war. The UN Arms Treaty has caused so much controversy because it outlines a plan to target "all types of conventional weapons, notably including small arms and light weapons," acco...
An uncredited Anthony Asquith is one of the directors of this WWII film (a joint UK/US production) which aims to explain British culture and character to the newly arrived American soldier. Starting with the ubiquitous pub visit, the film breezes through geography lessons, food and entertainment on the Home Front. Remarkably the film is not a patronising propaganda piece like so many other similar productions - other than the rather clumsy section on race. This success is down to the genial presence of Burgess 'The Penguin' Meredith as our guide, who always knows when to offer a supporting look or comment to camera. Whilst the British may come across as a little staid, the film explains that after four years of war, "we are not quiet, just weary". Directed by Burgess Meredith & Anthony...
On Memorial Day, politicians will speak at ceremonies all over the country and repeat their favorite mantra: "Support the troops." This pledge is hammered into the American psyche at every turn. But there is a hidden, dark history that shows that the politicians are in fact no friend to service members--but their greatest enemy. An easy way to prove this truth is to look at how they so quickly betray and abandon their soldiers after purposely ruining their lives, and even after using them as literal lab rats. In this disturbing chapter of The Empire Files, Abby Martin documents decades of experimentation on US troops—from nuclear tests to psychotropic drugs—as well as knowingly exposing them to deadly poisons, from sarin gas to Agent Orange. Most damning is that the hundreds of tho...

The U.S. President has made the case, again and again, that sending ground troops to Syria would be a mistake. Instead, Barack Obama has favoured a combination of air strikes and military advisers on the ground, to help U.S. allies in Syria repel ISIL. Now the deployment of so-called non-combat troops is about to get larger - an additional 250 special forces bringing the total to 300. They will not be leading the fight on the ground, but will be essential in providing the training and assisting local force. The main opposition group - the High Negotiations Committee says it welcomes the decision. What difference, if any, will the extra 250 soldiers make? Will they affect the outcome of the civil war? Why is the US sending its troops to finish off a fractured band of bush fighters in the middle of Africa? Political payback for the quiet sacrifices of Uganda's troops in Somalia could be one reason. President Barack Obama announced Friday he is dispatching about 100 US troops, mostly special operations forces to central Africa to advise in the fight against the Lord's Resistance Army, a guerrilla group accused of widespread atrocities across several countries. In this edition of the show we ask; is it the thin end of the wedge? The Lord's Resistance Army began life in the early 1980's as the Holy Spirit Movement, led by a woman called Alice Lakwena who claimed the Holy Spirit had ordered her to overthrow the Ugandan government, which was accused of treating the Acholi people of the Nor...
While not mentioning Donald Trump by name, it was pretty clear who President Barack Obama was referring to when he addressed the national convention of Disabled American Veterans. “As commander in chief, I’m pretty tired of some folks trash-talking America’s military and troops,” Obama said Monday in Atlanta. “Our military is somewhat smaller after two major ground wars [have] come to a close. That’s natural. And we’re gonna keep doing everything we need to do improve readiness and modernize our forces.” Trump has called US forces a “disaster” and once mocked Arizona Sen. John McCain by claiming the 2008 GOP presidential nominee isn’t a war hero because he was captured as a prisoner of war. “But let’s get some facts straight,” Obama continued, “We have the most capable fighting force i...
The war in Afghanistan is the period in which the United States invaded the country after the September 11 attacks, supported initially by close allies, and eventually by the wider North Atlantic Treaty Organization, beginning in 2003. The conflict is also known as the U.S. war in Afghanistan. It followed the Afghan Civil War's 1996–2001 phase. Its public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda, and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power. Key allies supported the U.S. from the start, including the United Kingdom. In August 2003, NATO became involved as an alliance, taking the helm of the International Security Assistance Force. On 28 December 2014, NATO formally ended combat operations in Afghanistan and transferred full security responsibility to th...
American and Moldovan troops have begun the joint exercise Dragon Pioneer 2016 on May 3 in the neighboring Republic of Moldova, after protesters tried to block the US troops from entering the country. The join drills are scheduled to continue until May 20 and are the first for the Republic of Moldova. After crossing Romania, the US military vehicles entered Moldova on Tuesday morning, May 3, through the Sculeni checkpoint. Protesters from the Socialist Party of Moldova, a pro-Russian opposition party led by Igor Dodon, tried to block their route, as they’ve previously announced they would do, reports local Hotnews.ro. They were carrying placards with slogans against NATO. But a small group of people also came to welcome the US troops. During the Dragon Pioneer 2016 exercise, the US and Mol...
