Cicero
Marcus Tullius Cicero (/ˈsɪsᵻroʊ/; Classical Latin: [ˈmaːr.kʊs ˈtʊl.li.ʊs ˈkɪ.kɛ.roː]; Greek: Κικέρων, Kikerōn; 3 January 106 BC – 7 December 43 BC) was a Roman philosopher, politician, lawyer, orator, political theorist, consul, and constitutionalist. He came from a wealthy municipal family of the Roman equestrian order, and is widely considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists.
His influence on the Latin language was so immense that the subsequent history of prose in not only Latin but European languages up to the 19th century was said to be either a reaction against or a return to his style. According to Michael Grant, "the influence of Cicero upon the history of European literature and ideas greatly exceeds that of any other prose writer in any language". Cicero introduced the Romans to the chief schools of Greek philosophy and created a Latin philosophical vocabulary (with neologisms such as evidentia,humanitas, qualitas, quantitas, and essentia) distinguishing himself as a linguist, translator, and philosopher.

Plot: In 54 B.C. Julius Caesar seeks to solidify his position in Rome by putting down a rebellion in Gaul led by a tribal chieftain named Vercingetorix. Vercingetorix has rallied many tribes to his cause, including one led by the beautiful Queen Asterix and others who'd once pledged allegiance to Rome. SALVETE AMICI-- TURN ON CCs to read an English translation that I have tried my best to sync to the video. (to enable CC on your tablet or mobile device by tapping the "3 dots" in the upper right of the screen! :). Due to technical limitations I use the youtube caption system rather than directly embedding text in my videos (eheu), but probably takes just as much time. The original text I am reading directly from thelatinlibrary.com without macron or translation aids.. ERGO, some parts of this speech go much smoother than others.. there are parts I am much more familiar with than others, and there is A LOT of repetition throughout; & certainly many mistakes are made here in both scansion and pronunciation.
This speech provides some strong evidence for the real historical identities of the characters/pseudonyms portrayed in the poetry of Catullus. Cicero needs no introduction. From his writings, I think it's a fair assumption to say that he loathed Catullus, Clodia, Clodius, and all the other hip-bohemian Romans-- which would also include Marcus Caelius, the defendant!
Marcus Caelius Rufus appears frequently in the corpus Catulli addressed directly as both "Caelius" and "Rufus" (e.g. 58, 69, 77.
In my opinion it's not unreasonable to think that Clodia Metelli (chief "plaintiff" /"prodigious prostitute") is infact ' "THE Lesbia". This is a somewhat more tenuous link, I think one good piece of evidence would be Cat. 49- addressed to Cicero: Catullus is (sarcastically) "thanking" (i.e. insulting) Cicero for WHAT? (----- could it be for outing her identity?)
P. CLODIUS Pulcher, Clodia's younger brother and one of the Prosecutors in the case = "Lesbius Pulcher" to Catullus! THE KEY HERE is CAT.79! Go read it. the first 2 lines are something like. "Lesbius (i.e. Lesbia's brother) is PRETTY (PULCHER)..and what if he weren't-- Would then Lesbia despise him as she does you and all yours, Catullus?"... the next two lines imply incest between the brother and sister, and also homosexual tendencies on Lesbius' part ('vendat' is a pun, and then the fact that people won't kiss him (socially) speaks to the cleanliness of his face/mouth...)
Basically in this speech all Cicero does is talk some serious shit about everybody and it's seriously awesome.
He was clearly less-concerned with actually defending Caelius than he was with advancing his own ego/reputation by using the opportunity to publicly humiliate a well-known brother/sister pair of Patrician debaucherers-- Clodius/Clodia And humiliate them he does..
These two were like the Hiltons or Kardashians of the time... think over-privileged, junkie yuppy nitwits and picture them in the time of the late republic. Their names were originally Claudius/ Claudia, but they had them changed so they would actually sound Plebian (I'M NOT JOKING)
P. Clodius Pulcher, a prosecutor in the case, Clodia's younger brother and Caelius' former landlord, was known for being rather effeminate, as well as doing things like cross-dressing as a vestal virgin to infiltrate Saturnalia festivals (YES, THIS HAPPENED);
"Clodia Metelli" Originally "Claudia Claudii" known for being a rather loose woman, since the death of her husband (Quintus Metellus, murdered by poison, no less).
She was particularly known for entertaining her lovers at the bathes..
Cicero subtly-outs Clodia's identity as Catullus' Lesbia at several times in the speech, calling her a 'songbird', 'poetress' and 'inventress of fables' between repeatedly calling her a profligate whore/prostitute/harlot. Actually, I believe (no textual evidence, just an idea) that Catullus might have been involved somehow in this case-- though not mentioned by Cicero by-name, I believe he may have been Clodia's friends waiting in the baths to capture Licinius?
Caelius, the defendant, was pretty much your typical 'man-child,' probably in his mid-late twenties (although still under his father's pecuniary authority,) and also probably mostly-guilty of the charges (as well as 'slander and abuse',) although Cicero was successful in getting him acquitted*. attacking/humiliating Clodia. But Cicero doesn't stop with her, he also makes fun of his own client, the prosecution, the witnesses, and even the judges throughout the oration.
*Free to pursue his civic life, at this point Caelius makes the unfortunate decision of joining Julius Caesar's side of the ensuing civil war and is subsequently killed.
Bottom line-- From the very onset of the speech, Cicero rhetorically frames the whole circumstances of the case as a comedy/farce being put on for the judges, forced to sit watch while the rest of the city is on holiday; using dramatic personification of both real and imaginary characters as a means within itself to make his points. This is some really entertaining stuff I've really enjoyed translating/geeking out on for the past year or so.

Elyesa Bazna was an Albanian from Kosovo who spied for the Germans during the Second World War, and was widely known by his code name Cicero. Elyesa Bazna was a famous World War II secret agent. Principally motivated by a feeling of power, he sold information to the Germans through their attaché Ludwig Carl Moyzisch, in Turkey Ankara in what became known as the Cicero affair. The information that he leaked is believed to have been potentially among the more damaging disclosures made by a Second World War spy but conflicts inside the highest echelons of the German government meant that little if any of it was acted upon.

Cicero March details a civil rights march on September 4, 1966. Robert Lucas (Congress of Racial Equality) led activists through Cicero, Illinois to protest restrictions in housing laws. White residents of Cicero respond with vitriolic jeers as the police struggle to prevent a riot.
This film is part of a seven part module or series ("The Urban Crisis and the New Militants") produced by The Film Group that, "teach by raising questions rather than by attempting to answer them." The modules tell their story through editing rather than voice-over narration and show "real events, with real people acting spontaneously," as the Group explained to an educational film distributor.
Thanks to release prints of The Urban Crisis and the New Militants donated by Bill Cottle and Mike Gray to Chicago Film Archives and two preservation grants awarded to CFA in 2005 and 2006 by the National Film Preservation Foundation, CFA was able to preserve the entire seven-part series. All release prints and preserved prints currently reside in our FilmGroup Collection.
