Modern Poetry (ENGL 310) with Langdon Hammer
The lecture introduces the poetry of Ezra Pound. Tensions in Pound's personality and career are considered, particularly in terms of his relationships with other poets and his fascism and anti-capitalism. The poem "The Seafarer" is examined as a quintessentially Poundian project in its treatment and translation of poetic forms. The first Canto of his epic project, The Cantos, is analyzed as a meditation on the process of expressing and engaging with history and literary tradition.

"To mark 2008's 50th anniversary of his release, historian Sean Street investigates how Ezra Pound, one of the 20th century's most important poets, was accused of treason by the US Government and held for years in a mental hospital after he made a series of anti-American and anti-Semitic broadcasts in Italy.
The programme investigates the significance of the case today, asking whether he committed treason or inconveniently used his right to free speech. With contributions from Pound's daughter Mary de Rachewiltz, his biographer David Moody and the playwright Bernard Kops, who wrote a play about Pound, in order to find out how we should view the complex and controversial poet."
Some quotes from Eustace Mullins' 'This Difficult Individual EZRA POUND'( 1961), the only authorized biography of Pound:
"Ezra Pound was not interested in Mussolini merely as one who could make the trains run on time, and meet the interest payments on Italian bonds held in London and New York vaults."
"The editorial page of the 'B'nai B'rith Messenger' of April 8, 1955, carried this note: "TALKING ABOUT unsavory characters, you might be interested in the fact that Ezra Pound, the poet who joined Hitler and Mussolini in the campaign of extermination of Jews, is well taken care of in the St. Elizabeths Hospital for mental diseases, in Washington, D.C."
This was typical of the allegations that were hurled against Pound throughout his imprisonment. This was the gratitude that was offered him for the forty years during which he helped Jewish poets, and shielded them from the death cars of the Gestapo. Pound had publicly criticized Hitler, was persona non grata with the Nazi government, as proven by their refusal to grant him a pass to Katyn, and had met Mussolini only once."
"When Ezra Pound was mentioned in literary periodicals, he was now (in 1943) condemned as a "Nazi", although he was persona non grata with the German government. He had publicly criticized Hitler as being "too hysterical", and at no time was he on good terms with any official of the Nazi regime."

Ezra Pound's Cantos represent some of the highest achievement in 20th century poetry. While mapping the history of man, the Cantos begin with an episode of Homer's Odyssey, particularly the journey into Hades. Pound uses the 16th century Latin version of Homer by the obscure Andreas Divus, a book he had bought in Paris where he was perhaps the most important poet in the world in the first decades of the past century. Regrettable politics mars the legacy of Pound the man, but his work is undeniably some of the greatest ever produced. The Cantos essentially are of three sorts; the first concern those living in hell content with it; the second concern those who experience a metamorphosis and see that things could be better; and the third set concern those who lead man to better life.

Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (30 October 1885 – 1 November 1972) was an American expatriate poet, critic and a major figure of the early modernist movement. His contribution to poetry began with his promotion of Imagism, a movement that derived its technique from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and economy of language. His best-known works include Ripostes (1912), Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920), and his unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos (1917–1969).
Working in London in the early 20th century as foreign editor of several American literary magazines, Pound helped to discover and shape the work of contemporaries such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Robert Frost, and Ernest Hemingway. He was responsible for the publication in 1915 of Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," and for the serialization from 1918 of Joyce's Ulysses. Hemingway wrote of him in 1925: "He defends [his friends] when they are attacked, he gets them into magazines and out of jail. ... He writes articles about them. He introduces them to wealthy women. He gets publishers to take their books. He sits up all night with them when they claim to be dying ... he advances them hospital expenses and dissuades them from suicide."

Ezra Pound - The Cantos - Canto I
Ezra Pound's Cantos represent some of the highest achievement in 20th century poetry. While mapping the history of man, the Cantos begin with an episode of Homer's Odyssey, particularly the journey into Hades. Pound uses the 16th century Latin version of Homer by the obscure Andreas Divus, a book he had bought in Paris where he was perhaps the most important poet in the world in the first decades of the past century. Regrettable politics mars the legacy of Pound the man, but his work is undeniably some of the greatest ever produced. The Cantos essentially are of three sorts; the first concern those living in hell content with it; the second concern those who experience a metamorphosis and see that things could be better; and the third set concern those who lead man to better life. -

"Ezra Pound was not interested in Mussolini merely as one who could make the trains run on time, and meet the interest payments on Italian bonds held in London and New York vaults."
"The editorial page of the 'B'nai B'rith Messenger' of April 8, 1955, carried this note: "TALKING ABOUT unsavory characters, you might be interested in the fact that Ezra Pound, the poet who joined Hitler and Mussolini in the campaign of extermination of Jews, is well taken care of in the St. Elizabeths Hospital for mental diseases, in Washington, D.C."
This was typical of the allegations that were hurled against Pound throughout his imprisonment. This was the gratitude that was offered him for the forty years during which he helped Jewish poets, and shielded them from the death cars of the Gestapo. Pound had publicly criticized Hitler, was persona non grata with the Nazi government, as proven by their refusal to grant him a pass to Katyn, and had met Mussolini only once."

Hailey (Idaho), 1885 – Venezia, 1972
Visse gran parte della sua vita in Europa e fu uno dei maggiori esponenti del modernismo e della poesia del XX secolo.
Dopo gli studi di filologia all’universitá della Pennsylvania, nel 1908 si trasferisce in Europa. Pochi mesi a Gibilterra e Venezia, dove scrive il suo primo libro di poesie, A lume spento, per poi trasferirsi a Londra per 12 anni.
Si trasferisce a Parigi nel 1920, a quel tempo patria di avanguardie culturali e avanguardisti.

Frequenta personaggi del calibro di Pablo Picasso, James Joyce, Tristan Tzara, Thomas Eliot («The Waste Land») ed Ernest Hemingway, che di lui disse: «Io gl'insegnai a tirare di pugilato e Pound a me ciò che si doveva e non si doveva scrivere.»

Nel ’24 si trasferisce a Rapallo. Anche qui crea un circolo di amici artisti e varie iniziative letterarie e musicali.
Pur non essendo mai iscritto al PNF, si avvicina al fascismo, del quale apprezza i provvedimenti a favore dei lavoratori, il piano di opere pubbliche e la ricerca di una terza via tra collettivismo e liberismo.
Negli anni ‘30 si dedica alla politica e all’economia.
Pound era convinto che il poeta non potesse estranearsi dalla realtá, quindi dedica molta della sua letteratura (Abc dell’economia, Lavoro e Usura) all’analisi di quella che ritiene una questione importantissima per il suo tempo, e cioè il conflitto tra economia e finanza. Il fulcro del conflitto, che lui rappresenta come una nuova lotta tra guelfi e ghibellini, è rappresentato dall’usura.
Per lui il modo piú logico di distribuire ricchezza era quello di distribuire lavoro, e non denaro, che era solo una convenzione sociale. I daneistocrati invece, potendo creare moneta dal nulla, controllavano l’economia e quindi anche il lavoro.
Riprende cosí le teorie dell’anarchico tedesco Silvio Gesell, e afferma che è quindi necessario tassare il denaro stesso e non i cittadini, ponendo ogni mese una marca da bollo pari ad 1/100 del valore nominale del denaro:
lo Stato incasserebbe quindi ogni anno il 12% della massa monetaria in circolazione;
le banche tornerebbero ad essere solo intermediari perché non potrebbero piú tenere denaro nei loro forzieri (azzeramento del valore in 100 mesi);
lo Stato tornerebbe cosí ad avere piena sovranitá monetaria.
Unica altra tassa possibile è quella sullo scambio commerciale. Ogni tassa sul reddito è considerata da Pound una forma di usura.
Nel ‘33 incontra Mussolini e gli esprime le sue teorie in materia economica. «Duce, ho la possibilità di non far pagare le tasse ai cittadini.»
Nel ‘35 viene pubblicato il suo libro «Jefferson e Mussolini» dove afferma che Mussolini era l'erede della politica agraria e populista tenuta da Jefferson.

«Il primo atto del Fascismo è stato salvare l'Italia da gente troppo stupida per saper governare, voglio dire dai comunisti senza Lenin.

Il secondo è stato di liberarla dai parlamentari e da gruppi politicamente senza morale. Quanto all'etica finanziaria, direi che dall'essere un paese dove tutto era in vendita, Mussolini in dieci anni ha trasformato l'Italia in un paese dove sarebbe pericoloso tentare di comperare il governo.»

Apprezza anche la politica economica di Hitler, anche se lo definisce un «imitatore isterico» di Mussolini, mentre degli altri leader del tempo dirá che erano delle «canaglie,» e fu particolarmente duro con Churchill.

Nel ‘39 torna per un breve periodo negli Stati Uniti, per cercare di mediare tra le posizioni di Italia e US, ma non ha successo.

Torna in Italia nel ’40, dove tiene un programma radiofonico in lingua Inglese «Europe calling, Ezra Pound speaking» dove accusa gli angloamericani e la finanza internazionale di aver provocato la guerra contro i paesi che si erano ribellati all’usura. Invita il popolo americano alla disobbedienza civile e a chiedere il rispetto della Costituzione, secondo lui violata da Roosvelt.
Aderisce alla Repubblica Sociale Italiana, fondata il 18 settembre ’43 a Saló, con a capo Mussolini (arrestato il 25 luglio e successivamente liberato dai tedeschi).
