Dire Straits was a British rock band, formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler lead vocals and lead guitar, his younger brother David Knopfler ,rhythm guitar and backing vocals, John Illsley bass guitar and backing vocals, and Pick Withers drums and percussion. Dire Straits' sound drew from a variety of musical influences, including jazz, folk, and blues, and came closest to beat music within the context of rock and roll. Despite the prominence of punk rock during the band's early years, the band's stripped-down sound contrasted with punk, demonstrating a more "rootsy" influence that emerged from pub rock. Many of Dire Straits' compositions were melancholic. Dire Straits' biggest selling album, Brothers in Arms, has sold over 30 million copies, and was the first album to sell a million copies on Compact Disc.

Quasi tutto il materiale è tratto da quanto i Dire Straits avevano fino ad allora proposto nelle loro esibizioni in piccoli locali e club londinesi.
Le sonorità un po' déjà vu ma sempre molto fresche e le liriche moderne, pur non rispecchiando la temperie punk all'epoca imperante, resero l'album piacevole e facilmente fruibile in particolar modo al pubblico radiofonico che ne decretò immediatamente il successo. La copertina dell'album raffigura un quadro di Chuck Loyola.

Dire Straits is the self-titled debut album by British rock band Dire Straits, released in October 1978 (see 1978 in music) by Phonogram Records.
The single "Sultans of Swing" first broke the US top five early spring 1979 (being a hit a full five months after the album was released there) and then rose to #8 in the British charts. "Water of Love" was also released as a single in some countries, and charted in Australia, reaching #54, and in the Netherlands, reaching #28. In Europe, the album sold four million copies while in the U.S. it sold two million copies.
The album was remastered and released with the rest of the Dire Straits catalogue in 1996 to most of the world excluding the U.S. and on 19 September 2000 in the United States. For 2010 release of an anniversary album is planned. It will be devoted the 30 anniversary of the edition of a vinyl.
The cover image is taken from a painting by Chuck Loyola, while the Dire Straits Fender icon was designed by Geoff Halpern.
A small number of guitars were used on the album by Mark Knopfler. These included a pair of red Fender Stratocasters (one from 1961-serial number #68354 and one from 1961/62-serial number #80470). He played his 1928 National and 1937 National steel guitars on tracks "Water of Love" and "Wild West End", respectively. A black Fender thinline Telecaster was played on "Setting Me Up". Mark and David also played Mark's sunburst Fender Telecaster. There was also an unidentified acoustic guitar used on several tracks.

Dire Straits is the self-titled debut album by British rock band Dire Straits, released in October 1978 (see 1978 in music) by Phonogram Records.
The single "Sultans of Swing" first broke the US top five early spring 1979 (being a hit a full five months after the album was released there) and then rose to #8 in the British charts. "Water of Love" was also released as a single in some countries, and charted in Australia, reaching #54, and in the Netherlands, reaching #28. In Europe, the album sold four million copies while in the U.S. it sold two million copies.
The album was remastered and released with the rest of the Dire Straits catalogue in 1996 to most of the world excluding the U.S. and on 19 September 2000 in the United States. For 2010 release of an anniversary album is planned. It will be devoted the 30 anniversary of the edition of a vinyl.
The cover image is taken from a painting by Chuck Loyola, while the Dire Straits Fender icon was designed by Geoff Halpern.
A small number of guitars were used on the album by Mark Knopfler. These included a pair of red Fender Stratocasters (one from 1961-serial number #68354 and one from 1961/62-serial number #80470). He played his 1928 National and 1937 National steel guitars on tracks "Water of Love" and "Wild West End", respectively. A black Fender thinline Telecaster was played on "Setting Me Up". Mark and David also played Mark's sunburst Fender Telecaster. There was also an unidentified acoustic guitar used on several tracks.

The video opens with scenes of the band in a pub playing pool, interspersed with concert clips. Playing over this is the song "Saturday Night at the Movies" performed by The Drifters. The music changes to the instrumental "Stargazer", from the film Local Hero, over external shots of a sold-out Hammersmith Odeon. The scene switches to the inside of the venue as Dire Straits are announced and walk onstage for the concert.
The closing credits again use the Drifters' "Saturday Night at the Movies".

Good Rockin' Tonite aired every Friday at midnight from the early 1980s until 1993. Like Video Hits, it was more or less the same approach: music videos, interviews, countdowns, giveaways, and so on forth. This show became more or less a Canadian counterpart to NBC's Friday Night Videos.
Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler is host David Foster's guest along with John Parr & Rob Lowe on GOOD ROCKIN' TONITE. In the 5 weeks following host Terry David Mulligan's departure from the Vancouver CBC TV series "Good Rockin' Tonite," Foster, Bruce Allen, Loverboy, Platinum Blonde and Stu Jeffries (who became host) filled in. Canadian music executive, record producer , composer, songwriter, musician & singer David Foster composed the film score for "St Elmo's Fire" starring Rob Lowe. He produced & co-wrote with Bryan Adams & others the 1985 charity song "Tears Are Not Enough," Canada's #1 song in 1985. He has won 16 Grammy Awards."

Good Rockin' Tonite aired every Friday at midnight from the early 1980s until 1993. Like Video Hits, it was more or less the same approach: music videos, interviews, countdowns, giveaways, and so on forth. This show became more or less a Canadian counterpart to NBC's Friday Night Videos.
Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler is host David Foster's guest along with John Parr & Rob Lowe on GOOD ROCKIN' TONITE. In the 5 weeks following host Terry David Mulligan's departure from the Vancouver CBC TV series "Good Rockin' Tonite," Foster, Bruce Allen, Loverboy, Platinum Blonde and Stu Jeffries (who became host) filled in. Canadian music executive, record producer , composer, songwriter, musician & singer David Foster composed the film score for "St Elmo's Fire" starring Rob Lowe. He produced & co-wrote with Bryan Adams & others the 1985 charity song "Tears Are Not Enough," Canada's #1 song in 1985. He has won 16 Grammy Awards."
