As a result of the series of trade routes known as the Silk Road, Europeans had long been fascinated with goods from East Asia. Trade in Chinese and Japanese silks, porcelains, and lacquer, which had begun in the Middle Ages, grew to massive proportions in the 17th and 18th centuries. Western craftsmen responded to the vogue for Asian luxury goods by producing objects inspired by the East. This scarlet lacquered cabinet, decorated with exotic figures and landscapes in gold and silver leaf, was probably attributed to the English furniture maker Giles Grendey in the "chinoiserie" style.
With the help of animation, we can look more closely at some of the whimsical aspects of the desk, including a pillar that pulls out to reveal a hollow compartment, the perfect hiding place for personal papers or other valuables.

Cabinet Secretary
A Cabinet Secretary is usually a senior official (typically a civil servant) who provides services and advice to a Cabinet of Ministers as part of the Cabinet Office. In many countries, the position can have considerably wider functions and powers, including general responsibility for the entire civil service.
The title of Cabinet Secretary may also be used as an alternative term for a politically appointed cabinet minister, derived from Secretary of State - the formal title for ministers. This naming convention is used in Japan, Kenya, Scotland and the United States.
Australia
In Australia, the equivalent position is the Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, although both the Department and its secretary have wider responsibilities than in most other governments derived from the Westminster System. Furthermore, there is also a ministerial position entitled Cabinet Secretary with a portfolio for the preparation and management of cabinet business, although the duties are somewhat different from the British position.

One of the finest achievements of European furniture making, this cabinet is the most important product from Abraham (1711--1793) and David Roentgen's (1743--1807) workshop. A writing cabinet crowned with a chiming clock, it features finely designed marquetry panels and elaborate mechanisms that allow for doors and drawers to be opened automatically at the touch of a button. Owned by King Frederick William II, the Berlin cabinet is uniquely remarkable for its ornate decoration, mechanical complexity, and sheer size.

This video was created for LaunchPad, a program of digital interpretive materials that supplement the viewing of works of art on display in the Art Institute of Chicago's galleries.
As a result of the series of trade routes known as the Silk Road, Europeans had long been fascinated with goods from East Asia. Trade in Chinese and Japanese silks, porcelains, and lacquer, which had begun in the Middle Ages, grew to massive proportions in the 17th and 18th centuries. Western craftsmen responded to the vogue for Asian luxury goods by producing objects inspired by the East. This scarlet lacquered cabinet, decorated with exotic figures and landscapes in gold and silver leaf, was probably attributed to the English furniture maker Giles Grendey in the "chinoiserie" style.
With the help of animation, we can look more closely at some of the whimsical aspects of the desk, including a pillar that pulls out to reveal a hollow compartment, the perfect hiding place for personal papers or other valuables.

Kenya re-emphasised its position on the world’s largest refugee camp yesterday, stating that plans for the repatriation of the more than 360,000 Somali refugees within the camp will proceed as planned. The meeting was attended by Foreign Affairs and Investment Promotion Minister of Somalia Dr Abdusalam Hadliye Omer and UNHCR’s Filippo Grandi. The CS said: “The commission directed the tripartite technical committee to conclude concrete operational modalities and support measures which will be provided in Kenya and Somalia.

Kenya re-emphasised its position on the world’s largest refugee camp yesterday, stating that plans for the repatriation of the more than 360,000 Somali refugees within the camp will proceed as planned. According to Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed, more than 16,000 refugees have already returned home on the voluntary repatriation programme that was agreed upon by refugee agency United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the Somali Government as well as the Kenyan government. Ms Mohammed said the process will be implemented with continued support of the governments of Kenya and Somali and other international partners. “The process is ongoing and began a week ago. It is going to be complex but we are ready to take the challenges on,” said the CS who spoke yesterday in Nairobi during a ministerial tripartite commission meeting between the governments of Kenya and Somalia and the UNHCR. The meeting was attended by Foreign Affairs and Investment Promotion Minister of Somalia Dr Abdusalam Hadliye Omer and UNHCR’s Filippo Grandi. The CS said: “The commission directed the tripartite technical committee to conclude concrete operational modalities and support measures which will be provided in Kenya and Somalia.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery warned that the repatriation of refugees would not be confined to Daadab camp, but that the government would also vet refugees in Kenyan major towns to ensure they are repatriated to their mother land. Nkaissery who was speaking in Kajiado expressed concern that the government had noticed that some refugees had left the targeted camps for major towns to evade being sent back home.
