Alton Sterling was shot and killed by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Police say he was reaching for a gun while they were trying to arrest him. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
“Graphic footage of Alton Sterling’s death in Louisiana shocked observers as it spread across social media, with people from all walks of life expressing rage and disgust.
The 37-year-old was shot dead by Baton Rouge Police outside a convenience store early Tuesday, with video from a witness showing police tackling him to the ground before gunshots are heard.
One of the officers in the clip shouts “gun” before the shots, though store owner Abdullah Mulfahi told the Daily News that Sterling’s hand was not near his gun and the weapon later recovered from his pocket was not visible.
Sterling’s cousin Sharida Sterling told The Advocate that the man she considered a brother “would have never fought the police, he wouldn’t have pulled a gun, he would have been too scared.”

Alton Sterling, a 37 year old black male, was shot and killed by Baton Rouge Louisiana police outside of a convenience store, where he would sell CDs, after an anonymous person called the police and said that Sterling threatened him with a gun, telling him to leave the area. Mr. Sterling has a prior arrest record, he is a registered sex offender due to the crime of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. He also has several other priors, including but not limited to domestic abuse, possession of marijuana and a gun, and also aggravated battery.
There has been video of Mr. Sterling's killer all over Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The constant viral exposure to people already on edge due to very tense race relations in the country has caused massive outrage not only on social media, but in the streets of reality as well.
There are protests in Baton Rouge right now, including a plea from their local NAACP branch for the police chief to resign. In Philadelphia, there are massive marches in the streets to protest the killing. Many other major cities are expected to have similar protests/rally types of marches. This all seems to be part of the "Black Lives Matter" phenomenon which has been sweeping the nation, unfortunately. Results of the phenomenon have been disastrous for the communities that they purport to assist in becoming safer.
The only result that these movements ever achieve is making local police forces less effective. A less effective police force makes for a less safe community. Who is going to protect the black community, often found in the ghetto, a place where men don't really have a place? Where 72% of the households are headed up by a single parent, 99/100 a single woman? If black lives truly matter, then the black community must rally around the police force, among other things, rather than running them away.

Baton Rouge (/ˌbætən ˈruːʒ/; French for "Red Stick", French: Bâton-Rouge [bɑtɔ̃ ʁuʒ]) is the capital of the U.S. state of Louisiana and its second-largest city. The seat of East Baton Rouge Parish, the city is located on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River.
As the "Capital City", Baton Rouge is the political hub for Louisiana, and is the second-largest metropolitan city in the state, with an estimated population of 228,895 as of 2014. The metropolitan area surrounding the city, known as Greater Baton Rouge, had a population of 820,159 people as of 2013. The urban area has around 594,309 inhabitants.
Baton Rouge is a major industrial, petrochemical, medical, research, motion picture, and growing technology center of the American South. The Port of Greater Baton Rouge is the tenth largest in the United States in terms of tonnage shipped, and is the farthest upstream Mississippi River port capable of handling Panamax ships.
The Baton Rouge area owes its historical importance to its strategic site upon the Istrouma Bluff, the first natural bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta. This allowed development of a business quarter safe from seasonal flooding. In addition, the city built a levee system stretching from the bluff southward to protect the riverfront and low-lying agricultural areas. The city is a culturally rich center, with settlement by immigrants from numerous European nations and African peoples. It was ruled by seven different governments: French, British, and Spanish in the colonial era, West Floridian, United States territory and state, Confederate, and United States again.

Alton Sterling, a 37 year old black male, was shot and killed by Baton Rouge Louisiana police outside of a convenience store, where he would sell CDs, after an anonymous person called the police and said that Sterling threatened him with a gun, telling him to leave the area. Mr. Sterling has a prior arrest record, he is a registered sex offender due to the crime of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. He also has several other priors, including but not limited to domestic abuse, possession of marijuana and a gun, and also aggravated battery. There has been video of Mr. Sterling's killer all over Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The constant viral exposure to people already on edge due to very tense race relations in the country has caused massive outrage not only on social media, but in the streets of reality as well. There are protests in Baton Rouge right now, including a plea from their local NAACP branch for the police chief to resign. In Philadelphia, there are massive marches in the streets to protest the killing. Many other major cities are expected to have similar protests/rally types of marches. This all seems to be part of the "Black Lives Matter" phenomenon which has been sweeping the nation, unfortunately. Results of the phenomenon have been disastrous for the communities that they purport to assist in becoming safer. The only result that these movements ever achieve is making local police forces less effective. A less effective police force makes for a less safe community. Who is going to protect the black community, often found in the ghetto, a place where men don't really have a place? Where 72% of the households are headed up by a single parent, 99/100 a single woman? Alton Sterling, a 37 year old black male, was shot and killed by Baton Rouge Louisiana police outside of a convenience store, where he would sell CDs, after an anonymous person called the police and said that Sterling threatened him with a gun, telling him to leave the area. Mr. Sterling has a prior arrest record, he is a registered sex offender due to the crime of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. He also has several other priors, including but not limited to domestic abuse, possession of marijuana and a gun, and also aggravated battery.
There has been video of Mr. Sterling's killer all over Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The constant viral exposure to people already on edge due to very tense race relations in the country has caused massive outrage not only on social media, but in the streets of reality as well.
There are protests in Baton Rouge right now, including a plea from their local NAACP branch for the police chief to resign. In Philadelphia, there are massive marches in the streets to protest the killing. Many other major cities are expected to have similar protests/rally types of marches. This all seems to be part of the "Black Lives Matter" phenomenon which has been sweeping the nation, unfortunately. Results of the phenomenon have been disastrous for the communities that they purport to assist in becoming safer.
The only result that these movements ever achieve is making local police forces less effective. A less effective police force makes for a less safe community. Who is going to protect the black community, often found in the ghetto, a place where men don't really have a place? Where 72% of the households are headed up by a single parent, 99/100 a single woman? If black lives truly matter, then the black community must rally around the police force, among other things, rather than running them away.

37-year-old Alton Sterling, an african-american man, was killed Tuesday night by police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sterling was shot and killed in front of a connivence store following a dispute. BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA — Two disturbing videos emerged this week showing the horrific death of a Louisiana man who was fatally shot at close range by police.
According to a statement published on the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Facebook page, a person called police just after midnight on Tuesday to report that a black man had threatened him with a gun. The man was described as wearing a red shirt and selling CDs outside a Triple S Food Mart. Two uniformed officers responded to the call and confronted the suspect, 37-year-old Alton Sterling, at the convenience store.
In a video taken from a nearby parked car, Sterling is seen being violently tackled and thrown to the pavement by an officer.
Another video, shot by the owner of the store, Abdullah Muflahi, shows Sterling pinned to the ground. One officer is straddling him, holding what appears to be a gun to his chest while warning him not to move. The other officer, who kneeling by Sterling’s head, pulls his gun out of its holster when Sterling continues to struggle.
One of the officers suddenly yells “Gun!”, and shots ring out as Sterling is hit repeatedly in the chest. He later died from his injuries.
An unnamed witness told Baton Rouge newspaper the Advocate that Sterling had a gun but was neither holding it nor touching his pockets during the altercation. Shop owner Muflahi told the Advocate that officers retrieved a gun from Sterling’s pocket after the incident.
The U.S. Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting after protests in the community erupted immediately after the shooting. The two officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after shooting incidents.

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA — Two disturbing videos emerged this week showing the horrific death of a Louisiana man who was fatally shot at close range by police.
According to a statement published on the Baton Rouge Police Department’s Facebook page, a person called police just after midnight on Tuesday to report that a black man had threatened him with a gun. The man was described as wearing a red shirt and selling CDs outside a Triple S Food Mart. Two uniformed officers responded to the call and confronted the suspect, 37-year-old Alton Sterling, at the convenience store.
In a video taken from a nearby parked car, Sterling is seen being violently tackled and thrown to the pavement by an officer.
Another video, shot by the owner of the store, Abdullah Muflahi, shows Sterling pinned to the ground. One officer is straddling him, holding what appears to be a gun to his chest while warning him not to move. The other officer, who kneeling by Sterling’s head, pulls his gun out of its holster when Sterling continues to struggle.
One of the officers suddenly yells “Gun!”, and shots ring out as Sterling is hit repeatedly in the chest. He later died from his injuries.
An unnamed witness told Baton Rouge newspaper the Advocate that Sterling had a gun but was neither holding it nor touching his pockets during the altercation. Shop owner Muflahi told the Advocate that officers retrieved a gun from Sterling’s pocket after the incident.
The U.S. Justice Department opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting after protests in the community erupted immediately after the shooting. The two officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after shooting incidents.
