HydroPack Wins Curator's Choice Award
In winning the 2011 Curator's Choice Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA), the HydroPack™ is a testament to the power of technology and materials being combined to solve a major problem such as hydration in emergency relief situations. The HydroPack™ uses Forward Osmosis technology and a proprietary membrane based on Eastman™ cellulose triacetate.

Vinegar Syndrom Destroys Microfilm
Presently there is much concern over the effect of microfilm and film degradations and the risks of losing important document archives. Vinegar Syndrom occurs when cellulose triacetate, the material used to create film stock, starts to break down. When this happens acetate ions begin to react to moisture and create acetic acid. This chemical reaction produces a vinegar like smell for which the process is aptly named. This process has set off an alarm within the history as it is causing invaluable historic records to slowly fade away.

A learning and humbling experience
"You can have the most wonderful innovation that will save thousands of lives," says Dr. Paul K. Carlton, Jr., director of Office of Innovations and Preparedness for the Texas A&M; University System Health Science Center. "But if no one uses that in the application, you haven't saved a single life." Hydration Technology Innovations (HTI) went to the village of Mudimbia in the flood-prone Budalangi area of Western Kenya to show how its HydroPack™ technology using forward osmosis and a membrane using Eastman cellulose triacetate, could be used by local people for hydration during a flooding situation. "This is an alternative in a certain limited set of circumstances so that people can survive," explains Dr. Carlton, former US Air Force surgeon general. "A little more work is involved than going to the faucet and turning it on. But the harvest is, instead of death, you have life." "There's a lot of technical things that we would learn from this that will change, but overall, we've shown that it's a very viable technology," says Keith Lampi, chief operating officer of HTI and one of its founders. "But when you look at a little higher level, in some sense you're humbled. You're looking at a group of people that are content in life, you're looking at a group of people that are happy, you're looking at a group of people that are proud of who they are. You're looking at a group of people that call themselves a family. They're just a beautiful people...it's just a privilege to be ...

Zacks Eyewear - Hercules
ZACKS EYEWEAR POLARIZED SUNGLASSES are made of Triacetate cellulose or TAC Polarized Lens feature a new lens technology formulated for superior visual and polarization clarity. They are hard coated to resist scratching and block out 99% of all harmful UV rays up to 400 nanometers. These lenses are very lightweight and highly impact resistant and come standard to all of our polarized series frames as we wanted a sunglass frame and lens that allowed for a very active lifestyle with a big concern to reduce weight of frame to help with ear and nose fatigue for wearing sunglasses all day. All of our polarized lenses now feature this technology. Safety Glasses A Superior Retail Value Most sunglasses selling for over $ 50 would not pass the rigorous testing of these quality glasses. Our safety glasses are made to high quality specifications in order to pass the standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). They must pass six different tests for optical quality plus three different tests for impact resistance (including one that shoots a 1/4 steel ball at over 100 miles per hour that leave a dimple on the lens) the defect rate practically zero and customer satisfaction is very high ZacksEyewear Additional information Web www.zackseyewear.com Email stevezachary@rocketmail.com Phone 928-304-5772 Facebook page www.facebook.com

Rayon: "Fashion's Favorite" 1940 Dupont 32min
more at clothing.quickfound.net "Tracks the manufacturing of rayon from raw material to finished product." Public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and equalization. Rayon is a manufactured regenerated cellulose fiber. Because it is produced from naturally occurring polymers, it is neither a truly synthetic fiber nor a natural fiber; it is a semi-synthetic or artificial fiber. Rayon is known by the names viscose rayon and art silk in the textile industry. It usually has a high luster quality giving it a bright sheen. Some major rayon fiber uses include apparel (eg Aloha shirts, blouses, dresses, jackets, lingerie, linings, scarves, suits, neckties, hats, socks), the filling in Zippo lighters, furnishings (eg bedspreads, bedsheets, blankets, window treatments, upholstery, slipcovers), industrial uses (eg medical surgery products, non-woven products, tire cord), and other uses (eg yarn, feminine hygiene products, diapers, towels). Rayon is a major feedstock in the production of carbon fiber. Nitrocellulose The fact that nitrocellulose is soluble in organic solvents such as ether and acetone, made it possible for Georges Audemars to develop the first "artificial silk" about 1855, but his method was impractical for commercial use. Commercial ...

Using a Water Purifier for a Raw Food Diet
Check out Bas Rutten's Liver Shot on MMA Surge: bit.ly Mahalo cooking expert Miranda Valentine tells you how to use a water purifier for a raw food diet. Those on raw food diets or thinking about starting one will need a water purifier to detoxify their systems. Since raw foodists aim for a healthy, toxin-free lifestyle, water purification is a must. Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier --------------------------------------------------------------------- Reverse osmosis, or "hyperfiltration," effectively eliminates and reduces contaminants in drinking water. Even particles as small as individual ions are removed through this process since the pores in a reverse osmosis water purification membrane are only 0.0005 microns in size.c Reverse osmosis purifiers are composed of granular activated carbon pre-filters, a reverse osmosis membrane, storage tank and a faucet. c These types of purifiers include: * Thin Film Composites: high rejection rates, meaning TFC membranes filter out more contaminants. * Cellulose Triacetate: less susceptible to degradation by chlorine than TFC membranes. How It Works --------------------------------------------------------------------- Reverse osmosis water purification systems use semi-permeable membranes that allow pure water to pass through while contaminants are held back. This process requires a driving force to push the water through the membrane.c Since the membranes in these filters degrade in the presence of chlorine, iron, manganese and ...
