Recording contract

A recording contract (commonly called a record deal) is a legal agreement between a record label and a recording artist (or group), where the artist makes a record (or series of records) for the label to sell and promote. Artists under contract are normally only allowed to record for that label exclusively; guest appearances on other artists' records will carry a notice "By courtesy of (the name of the label)", and that label may receive a percentage of sales.

Copyrights, payment and royalties

Labels typically own the copyright in the records their artists make, and also the master copies of those records. An exception is when a label makes a distribution deal with an artist; in this case, the artist, their manager, or another party may own the copyright (and masters), while the record is licensed exclusively to the label for a set period of time. Promotion is a key factor in the success of a record, and is largely the label's responsibility, as is proper distribution of records.

Chief Keef

Keith Cozart (born August 15, 1995), better known by his stage name Chief Keef, is an American rapper and record producer from Chicago, Illinois. Growing up in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood, Keef began rapping at an early age, and used his mother's karaoke machine and blank tapes to record his music. During his teenage years and while under house arrest, Keef's music videos were met with acclaim from local high school students. His increasing popularity led to him being the subject of a brief bidding war among labels. Ultimately, Keef signed a major record deal with Interscope Records and later signed with 1017 Brick Squad. Keef also became the CEO of his own record label, Glory Boyz Entertainment, which later developed into Glo Gang. His debut album Finally Rich was released on December 18, 2012.

Since becoming famous, Keef has continued to experience ongoing legal issues. These legal issues, accompanied with Keef's notability within Chicago's drill music genre, have caused Keef to gain a gangster-like image, which has been compared with past gangsta rappers, such as 50 Cent. Despite being dropped from Interscope in late 2014, Keef continued self-releasing mixtapes through his Glo Gang label. Although Keef had originally planned Bang 3 to be released as his second album, a then-track from the album, "Nobody", developed into its own project. Keef released Nobody as a full-length album in December 2014, while continuing to delay the often-pushed back Bang 3.

Kimberley Ann "Kim" Deal (born June 10, 1961) is an American singer, songwriter and musician, best known as the former bassist and backup vocalist of the alternative rock band Pixies, and the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for The Breeders. Deal joined Pixies in January 1986 as the band's bassist, adopting the stage name Mrs. John Murphy for the albums Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa. Following Doolittle and Pixies' hiatus, she formed The Breeders with Tanya Donelly, Josephine Wiggs and later introduced her identical twin sister Kelley Deal. Pixies broke up in early 1993.

After Pixies, Deal returned her focus to The Breeders, who released the platinum-selling album Last Splash in 1993. In 1994 The Breeders went into hiatus after Kelley entered drug rehabilitation. During their eight-year break, Deal adopted the stage name Tammy Ampersand and formed The Amps, recording a single album, Pacer in 1995. She resumed her role as The Breeders' guitarist for their third album Title TK in 2002, and returned to Pixies when they reunited in 2004. She left Pixies in 2013.
