Reigning Olympic and world sprint champion Usain Bolt, who sustained a torn hamstring at last month’s Jamaican Olympic trials, will be named on Jamaica’s team for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on Monday, the Gleaner newspaper reported on Friday.
Citing unnamed sources, the Kingston newspaper reported the Jamaica Olympic Association will list Bolt after the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) entered him among four runners for the 100m and 200m after a meeting of the JAAA selection committee.
Only three runners can represent Jamaica in each event at Brazil, leaving the final decision to team management in Rio to choose the final lineup.
Bolt withdrew from the Jamaican championships last week after winning his 100m semi-final heat, saying he had a low-grade torn hamstring and later tweeting a photograph of work being done on the back of his left leg.
By being provisionally listed on the Jamaican team, Bolt can still chase a third consecutive Olympic sweep of 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay golds in Rio if he proves his fitness to compete — something Bolt said he intends to do at the Diamond League meet in London on July 22.
Bolt was granted a medical exemption from the trials under JAAA rules.
The policy says athletes must compete at the trials to be considered for the team, but those ill or hurt for the event are given a chance to prove competitive fitness later and be considered for selection.
That makes the third-place finishers in the 100m and 200m at the Jamaican trials a provisional qualifier with Bolt’s fitness to decide their fates.
Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmeade took the top two spots in the 100m and 200m events. Jevaughn Minzie was third in the 100m with Julian Forte third in the 200m.
Top Jamaican women’s 400m hurdler Janieve Russell and world 200m runner-up Elaine Thompson were among four names submitted in their events as well.
Russell missed the trials after an injury in training, while Thompson, the women’s 100m winner, did not run the 200m after complaining of a sore hamstring.
Inter on Sunday were given a letoff when they snatched a late 1-1 derby draw with AC Milan, while league leaders SSC Napoli were held by a late goal at AS Roma. Reigning champions Inter remain three points behind Napoli, who looked to be heading five clear as they led in Rome until Angelino volleyed in a stunning leveler in the first minute of stoppage-time. Angelino’s strike gave even more significance to Stefan de Vrij’s last-gasp equalizer at the San Siro. The defender forced home Nicola Zalewski’s knockdown just as it looked like Tijjani Reijnders’ opener would be enough for Milan. “I can
The Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets on Saturday did not disappoint in a thrilling midseason matchup in front of a fired-up sellout crowd of more than 18,500 fans. The top two teams in the NHL delivered with a combined nine goals, including the 877th of Alex Ovechkin’s career to put him 18 back of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record. That tied the score, the Jets pulled it out in overtime and just about everyone involved got their money’s worth out of the 5-4 game. “We knew how we were both sitting in the standings and both having real good years,” Winnipeg coach Scott

Less than a week after splashing out a world-record fee for Naomi Girma, Chelsea has spent big again to bring England midfielder Keira Walsh back to the English Women’s Super League. Walsh left European champions Barcelona after more than two years to join Chelsea for a reported £400,000 (US$496,000) on Friday. Walsh was the world’s most expensive player for two years after moving to Barcelona from Manchester City for a reported £400,000 in 2022. That status now belongs to Girma, the US defender who cost Chelsea a reported £900,000 to sign from the San Diego Wave. Still, it means 27-year-old Walsh — a technically
