Stephen

Stephen or Steven /ˈstiːvən/ is a masculine first name, derived from the Greek name Στέφανος (Stéfanos), in turn from the Greek word "στέφανος", meaning "wreath, crown, honour, reward", literally "that which surrounds or encompasses". In ancient Greece, a wreath was given to the winner of a contest (from which the crown, symbol of rulers derived). The use of the noun was first recorded in Homer's Iliad. The name is significant to Christians: according to the Book of Acts in the New Testament, Saint Stephen was a deacon who was stoned to death and is regarded as the first Christian martyr. The name has many variants, which include Stephan, Stevan, Stefan and Stevon.

In Middle English, the name Stephen or Stephan was pronounced as a bi-syllabic word — Step-hen or Step-han — much like a Scandinavian surname. Steve was pronounced as it is in Modern English. This etymological usage began a decline in the mid-19th century.

Steve is the common short form, while various diminutives such as Stevie and Ste are also used. Many family names are derived from Stephen: the most common are Stephens/Stevens and Stephenson/Stevenson (others include Stephen, Stephan, Staphan, Stefan, Stevin and Stever).

Security guard

A security guard, security officer, or protective agent is a private person who is paid to protect property and its assets (people, money, etc) by utilizing preventative measures. They do this by maintaining a high-visibility presence to deter illegal and inappropriate actions, observing (either directly, through patrols, or by watching alarm systems or video cameras) for signs of crime, fire or disorder; then taking action to minimize damage (example: warning and escorting trespassers off property) and reporting any incidents to their client and emergency services as appropriate. Their international (at least in the United States of America and Canada) symbol of brotherhood is The Thin Green Line. Security officers are generally uniformed to represent their lawful authority on private property.

Until the 1980s, the term watchman was more commonly applied to this function, a usage dating back to at least the Middle Ages in Europe where there was no form of law enforcement (other than it being a private matter). This term was carried over to North America where it was interchangeable with night-watchman until both terms were replaced with the modern security-based titles. Security guards are sometimes regarded as fulfilling a private policing function.

Tom Rodgers

Tom Rodgers (born July 28, 1960) is a Washington, DC, activist and advocate for Native Americans and tribal issues. He is a member of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana. Rodgers played an important role in the investigation that led to the conviction of former lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Early life and education

Rodgers was born and raised on the Great Plains near Glasgow, Montana. He received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Denver College of Law in 1986, his Masters of International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University in 1997 and his International Executive MBA from Georgetown University in 1998.

Advocacy and representation

Tom Rodgers worked as a congressional staffer for Senator Max Baucus (D-Mont.) before starting his own consulting firm, Carlyle Consulting. His clients include the Alabama Coushatta of Texas, the Tule River Tribe of California, and the National Indian Gaming Association. Rodgers has written about persistent poverty and high unemployment in Native American communities. Rodgers established a scholarship at his alma mater, The University of Denver Sturm College of Law, named the Tom C. Rodgers O-tee-paym-soo-wuk Ethics in Government Scholarship, to benefit Native American law students, “O-tee-paym-soo-wuk” means “their own boss” in the Cree language. The purpose of the scholarship is to develop the legal and advocacy skills necessary to participate in the debate surrounding public policy and its creation, using ethics as their guiding value. The total scholarship value is around $160,000 over three years.

Pedro Alves (footballer, born 1979)

Pedro Miguel Morais Alves (born 8 February 1979), simply known as Pedro Alves, is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Cova da Piedade as a goalkeeper.

Club career

Born in Lisbon, Alves started his career with Belenenses. Though he spent 9 years at the club he managed only 4 appearances. After leaving the club in 2006 he joined Estrela da Amadora. Failing to get success, he tried his luck with Vitória Setúbal. Between 2009 and 2011, he played for Pinhalnovense making 43 appearances. Alves then played for Oriental before returning to Pinhalnovense. In 2014, he joined Cova da Piedade.

International career

He was included in the squad for 1995 Under-17 World Cup, but did not make any appearance.
