An acoustic guitar lesson on how to play "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin. This is another real classic Led Zeppelin track off of the "Houses of the Holy" album released way back in 1973. Once you figure out the tuning, it's not too difficult to play and it sounds really nice with all the open strings.
This is the acoustic part of the lesson, but I'll be doing the electric part soon so look for a link to part 2 at the top of this page.
I had a really great time working out, recording the parts and planning the lesson to this tune. I hope you have fun playing the song!
The guitar I'm playing here is a Taylor 214ce koa deluxe. I really like this guitar, it intonates amazingly well and it's tone is very balanced. It's also very easy to play.
The strings are Elixir phosphor bronze 12-53 with nanoweb coating. These strings are a little bit more expensive, but for me they easily last 4-5 times longer than non coated strings.
Folks may be surprised at how much time and effort goes into creating these videos. If you're getting something out of the lessons and can afford to contribute to the cause, I've setup a Paypal link. "Rain, Rain, Go Away" Nursery Rhyme.
Story:
While ChuChu, ChaCha, Chika and Chiku play together, Rain threatens to pour down! This is noticed by their umbrella friends who sense heavy rain and come to the rescue of the kids who are about to get wet. The umbrella friends then request the rain to go away and to allow the kids to play. The rain finally accepts the request of the umbrella friends and the kids play together again.

Thanks to Lynn in Scotland for reminding me I was supposed to re-do this at some point. It's kind of a springtime song for me, but what the hey. It's always springtime somewhere, right?
This "arrangement" incorporates some elements from the bass and mellotron parts but there is no attempt to play the vocal line. (That I'd like to see).
Therefore it's presented to you so that you can sing along and post your version of Planto's masterpiece. I know one or two of you who could do a killer vocal take on this. C'mon. Or you can be like me and sing to it in your apartment and frighten the neighbors.
Sorry, I have no tablature available. The chords and music are readily available in decent "recorded-versions" books which should still be in print.

Oh, and the tuning: dgcgcd (this matches the 6 string used in the recording, not the 12 string tuning. I believe it also corresponds to the tuning on the 6-string neck of the double neck used in concert. In this The Rain song guitar lesson, I will show you in-depth how to play this classic track by Led Zeppelin.
In my opinion, this is one of Jimmy Page's finest moments as a songwriter. The guitar lines he created for "The Rain Song" are simply so unique and gorgeous it is hard to put it into words.
In this The Rain Song guitar lesson, I will show you how to play all of those guitar chords and licks in the order they appear in this now classic song.
As you probably know already, the tuning for this track is quite unique, you will need to tune your guitar starting from the 6th string to (D G C G C D).
There is also a couple of guitar tracks going on at the same time, one electric and one acoustic. What I have done in this lesson is show you the most prominent guitar part at all times. 90% of the time both guitar parts are playing pretty much the same thing. However, there are some chords that are being strummed on the acoustic guitar while they are being arpeggio picked on the electric guitar. For those pars of the song I will show you the various ways you can pick it and also show you any of the licks that are played on the electric guitar.
For the most part, you can play these electric guitar licks while still performing the acoustic guitar parts. It sounds great when you put them together and have a cohesive piece that can be played on just one guitar.
Also, even though I am using an acoustic guitar for the entire lesson, it can also be played just as effectively on the electric guitar as long as it is in the right tuning.
I think I would rate "The Rain Song" as my all-time favorite Led Zeppelin song. The mood it creates and the great detail that went into creating the guitar parts are simply second to none. I think after learning this great song you will come to that very same conclusion. Have fun!

Robert Plant
Robert Anthony Plant, CBE (born 20 August 1948) is an English musician, singer, and songwriter best known as the lead singer and lyricist of the rock band Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page
James Patrick Page, OBE (born 9 January 1944) is an English musician, songwriter, and record producer who achieved international success as the guitarist and founder of the rock band Led Zeppelin.
Page began his career as a studio session musician in London and, by the mid-1960s, had become the most sought-after session guitarist in England. He was a member of the Yardbirds from 1966 to 1968. In late 1968, he founded Led Zeppelin.
Page is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time.Rolling Stone magazine has described Page as "the pontiff of power riffing" and ranked him number 3 in their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". An acoustic guitar lesson on how to play "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin. This is another real classic Led Zeppelin track off of the "Houses of the Holy" album released way back in 1973. Once you figure out the tuning, it's not too difficult to play and it sounds really nice with all the open strings.
This is the acoustic part of the lesson, but I'll be doing the electric part soon so look for a link to part 2 at the top of this page.
I had a really great time working out, recording the parts and planning the lesson to this tune. I hope you have fun playing the song!
The guitar I'm playing here is a Taylor 214ce koa deluxe. I really like this guitar, it intonates amazingly well and it's tone is very balanced. It's also very easy to play.
The strings are Elixir phosphor bronze 12-53 with nanoweb coating. These strings are a little bit more expensive, but for me they easily last 4-5 times longer than non coated strings.
Folks may be surprised at how much time and effort goes into creating these videos. If you're getting something out of the lessons and can afford to contribute to the cause, I've setup a Paypal link. Thanks to Lynn in Scotland for reminding me I was supposed to re-do this at some point. It's kind of a springtime song for me, but what the hey. It's always springtime somewhere, right?
This "arrangement" incorporates some elements from the bass and mellotron parts but there is no attempt to play the vocal line. (That I'd like to see).
Therefore it's presented to you so that you can sing along and post your version of Planto's masterpiece. I know one or two of you who could do a killer vocal take on this. C'mon. Or you can be like me and sing to it in your apartment and frighten the neighbors.
Sorry, I have no tablature available. The chords and music are readily available in decent "recorded-versions" books which should still be in print.

Oh, and the tuning: dgcgcd (this matches the 6 string used in the recording, not the 12 string tuning. I believe it also corresponds to the tuning on the 6-string neck of the double neck used in concert. As you probably know already, the tuning for this track is quite unique, you will need to tune your guitar starting from the 6th string to (D G C G C D).
There is also a couple of guitar tracks going on at the same time, one electric and one acoustic. What I have done in this lesson is show you the most prominent guitar part at all times. 90% of the time both guitar parts are playing pretty much the same thing. However, there are some chords that are being strummed on the acoustic guitar while they are being arpeggio picked on the electric guitar. For those pars of the song I will show you the various ways you can pick it and also show you any of the licks that are played on the electric guitar.
For the most part, you can play these electric guitar licks while still performing the acoustic guitar parts. It sounds great when you put them together and have a cohesive piece that can be played on just one guitar.
Also, even though I am using an acoustic guitar for the entire lesson, it can also be played just as effectively on the electric guitar as long as it is in the right tuning.
I think I would rate "The Rain Song" as my all-time favorite Led Zeppelin song. The mood it creates and the great detail that went into creating the guitar parts are simply second to none. I think after learning this great song you will come to that very same conclusion. Have fun!

My attempt at doing Rain Song by Led Zeppelin. I multitracked both a Tanglewood Acoustic and a Richwood RE125, through a Zoom G2 pedal and Reaper 4.78. Seven guitar tracks in total, playing variations, plus a heavily distorted guitar used only for the last part of the song. Bass Guitar is a Peavey BXP 5 and keyboards is an M-Audio Oxygen 49 controller fed through the Proteus VX VSTi in Reaper. Not being a keyboard player, I improvised something that I tried to fit around the song, hopefully it doesn't sound too out of place. My attempt at doing Rain Song by Led Zeppelin. I multitracked both a Tanglewood Acoustic and a Richwood RE125, through a Zoom G2 pedal and Reaper 4.78. Seven guitar tracks in total, playing variations, plus a heavily distorted guitar used only for the last part of the song.
Bass Guitar is a Peavey BXP 5 and keyboards is an M-Audio Oxygen 49 controller fed through the Proteus VX VSTi in Reaper. Not being a keyboard player, I improvised something that I tried to fit around the song, hopefully it doesn't sound too out of place. Though given I hadn't touched a keyboard in nigh on a decade and started the day with no clue what key the part was in, I'm happy enough. :-)
Yes, you can see my hand shaking at the end, I have some joint issues which can hound me after periods of intense playing, the ole fingers sometimes do not go where I want 'em too!

An electric guitar lesson on how to play "The Rain Song" by Led Zeppelin. This is another real classic Led Zeppelin track off of the "Houses of the Holy" album released way back in 1973.
This lesson goes over the electric guitar parts. There's some duplication, but there are also some really neat bits that the acoustic doesn't do. If you're playing this as a solo piece, you're probably going to want to combine bits from both lessons.
I had a really great time working out, recording the parts and planning the lesson to this tune. I hope you have fun playing the song!
I get a lot of questions about my sound so this is what I'm using:
My amp is an Egnater Renegade head through a Marshall 1960b cabinet. I use a TC Electronics Nova System through the loop for effects. On almost all songs I just use a digital delay, roughly 400ms, but some stuff I use tap tempo to set the delay. I also use a BB preamp on some lead tones and sometimes (rarely) a Boss CS-3 compressor. The reverb is from the amp. My wah is a Dunlop MC404 CAE Dual Inductor, REALLY great pedal! I also use a Polytune tuner which is fantastic.
For this part I had the guitar running through the gain channel with the minimum gain setting possible. I used some digital delay around 350ms, but just enough where it's barely noticeable. I used some reverb from the amp too.
My guitar is a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. I have Suhr Aldrich pickups on it. I have them coil split, but for this tune I had them running in full humbucker mode.
