Tanzawa Mountains
Tanzawa mountains (丹沢山地, Tanzawa-sanchi) are mountain range in the Kantō region, in Japan. It covers the northwestern part of Kanagawa Prefecture and touches the prefectural borders of Shizuoka Prefecture to the west and the Yamanashi Prefecture to the north.

Hiking
Climbers come from various parts of Japan, but there have been a growing number of international climbers. The mountain range offers numerous moderate to strenuous trails for hikers. The most popular peaks among climbers are Mount Tō (塔ノ岳) and Mount Ōyama (大山) which are located in the eastern part of the Mountains, mainly due to their easier transportation access from Yabitsu Pass. However, the tallest mountain in these mountains is Mount Hiru, which is 1,673 metres (5,489 ft). In comparison, Mount Tō is 1,491m (4,891 ft) high and Mount Ōyama is 1,252 metres (4,108 ft) high. The western part is less often visited, but offers the opportunity of river trekking or sawanobori (a form of mountaineering).

This was a fun little overnight hike. I stayed in Miyama hut and it was a welcoming spot. But don't be surprised when you have to wake up at 0430 am! You don't even have to bring much gear to this hike as there is so many amenity spots along the trail. Alright thanks for stopping by! Hiking Mount Hirugatake in Japan - Tanzawa's tallest peak in Japan
In this video, I'm going to share with you information about hiking the tallest peak of the Tanzawa Mountains, Mt. Hirugatake. Mount Hirugatake is the tallest mountain in the Tanzawa Mountain Range standing at 1,675 meters. At the top, you’ll see beautiful views of Mount Fuji, Sagami Bay, and the city lights ( if you stay in the hut ). ACCESS: 1.) Travel to Shibusawa Station on the Odakyu line. 2.) Mt Tanzawa Overnight Snow Hike, a Mountain Hut Experience | 雪の丹沢 尊仏山荘 山小屋
An incredible 2-day hike I did over Christmas time last year, during which I spent the night atop a mountain summit inside Sonbutsu Sansou - a Japanese mountain hut. A special experience! It had been a warm winter, but in a stroke of luck Tanzawa was struck by a snowstorm just days before my hike, blanketing the higher altitudes with unusually thick snow. The Tanzawa range is perhaps my favorite hiking area to date. In this video, I'm going to share with you information about hiking the tallest peak of the Tanzawa Mountains, Mt. Hirugatake.
Mount Hirugatake is the tallest mountain in the Tanzawa Mountain Range standing at 1,675 meters. At the top, you’ll see beautiful views of Mount Fuji, Sagami Bay, and the city lights ( if you stay in the hut ).
ACCESS:
1.) Travel to Shibusawa Station on the Odakyu line.
2.) Take the bus at bus stop number 2 going to Okura Bus Stop.
THE HIKE:
ASCENT: Okura Bus Stop - Tozawa Trailhead - Mt. Tonodake - Mt. Tanzawa - Mt. Hirugatake.
This is the route I'm going to describe in the video. This route will take you around 3 hours to reach your first stop, Mt. Tonodake. So, find the bridge and cross it. Turn left at the end of it. It will lead you to Tozawa Trailhead which will take you to Tonodake.
The trail leading to Mt. Tanzawa is quite established. Just be careful of the soft ground and mud. So, please wear proper shoes for hiking.
In Mt. Tanzawa, from the peak, go straight for just a little bit and on your right, you’ll see the trail going to Mt. Hirugatake.
Mt. Hiru boasts some of the most scenic views I’ve ever seen in Kanagawa. So, taking the trail going there early in the morning or before the sun sets in, during the golden hour would definitely take your breath away. It will take 2.5 ~ 3 more hours to reach the hut.
DESCENT:
option 1: Hirugatake - Tanzawa - Tonodake - Okura Bus Stop
option 2: Hirugatake - Hinokiboramaru - Nishi-Tanzawa Center

If you are looking for a place to hike (登山) this Fall, Mount Tanzawa (丹沢山) and Mount Tonodake. Mt. Tanzawa and Mt. Tonodake are part of the Tanzawa Mountain Range of the Tanzawa - Oyama Quasi-National Park in Kanagawa Prefecture. There are 7 mountain peaks in all in this mountain range. The highest peak is Mt. Hirugatake. Mount Tanzawa is one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan. These mountains are very accessible from Tokyo.
Access:
To access, Mt. Tanzawa you have to travel to Shibusawa Station on the Odakyu Odawara Line. Then take a bus going to Okura. Wait for the bus at bus stand number 2.
The hike:
The hike that I’m going to describe to you in this video is using Okura Ridge. It has a total distance of 19 km back and forth.

This was a fun little overnight hike. I stayed in Miyama hut and it was a welcoming spot. But don't be surprised when you have to wake up at 0430 am! You don't even have to bring much gear to this hike as there is so many amenity spots along the trail. Alright thanks for stopping by!

In this video, I'm going to share with you information about hiking the tallest peak of the Tanzawa Mountains, Mt. Hirugatake.
Mount Hirugatake is the tallest mountain in the Tanzawa Mountain Range standing at 1,675 meters. At the top, you’ll see beautiful views of Mount Fuji, Sagami Bay, and the city lights ( if you stay in the hut ).
ACCESS:
1.) Travel to Shibusawa Station on the Odakyu line.
2.) Take the bus at bus stop number 2 going to Okura Bus Stop.
THE HIKE:
ASCENT: Okura Bus Stop - Tozawa Trailhead - Mt. Tonodake - Mt. Tanzawa - Mt. Hirugatake.
This is the route I'm going to describe in the video. This route will take you around 3 hours to reach your first stop, Mt. Tonodake. So, find the bridge and cross it. Turn left at the end of it. It will lead you to Tozawa Trailhead which will take you to Tonodake.
The trail leading to Mt. Tanzawa is quite established. Just be careful of the soft ground and mud. So, please wear proper shoes for hiking.
In Mt. Tanzawa, from the peak, go straight for just a little bit and on your right, you’ll see the trail going to Mt. Hirugatake.
Mt. Hiru boasts some of the most scenic views I’ve ever seen in Kanagawa. So, taking the trail going there early in the morning or before the sun sets in, during the golden hour would definitely take your breath away. It will take 2.5 ~ 3 more hours to reach the hut.
DESCENT:
option 1: Hirugatake - Tanzawa - Tonodake - Okura Bus Stop
option 2: Hirugatake - Hinokiboramaru - Nishi-Tanzawa Center

An incredible 2-day hike I did over Christmas time last year, during which I spent the night atop a mountain summit inside Sonbutsu Sansou - a Japanese mountain hut. A special experience! It had been a warm winter, but in a stroke of luck Tanzawa was struck by a snowstorm just days before my hike, blanketing the higher altitudes with unusually thick snow.
The Tanzawa range is perhaps my favorite hiking area to date.

Tanzawa Mountains
Tanzawa mountains (丹沢山地, Tanzawa-sanchi) are mountain range in the Kantō region, in Japan. It covers the northwestern part of Kanagawa Prefecture and touches the prefectural borders of Shizuoka Prefecture to the west and the Yamanashi Prefecture to the north.

Hiking
Climbers come from various parts of Japan, but there have been a growing number of international climbers. The mountain range offers numerous moderate to strenuous trails for hikers. The most popular peaks among climbers are Mount Tō (塔ノ岳) and Mount Ōyama (大山) which are located in the eastern part of the Mountains, mainly due to their easier transportation access from Yabitsu Pass. However, the tallest mountain in these mountains is Mount Hiru, which is 1,673 metres (5,489 ft). In comparison, Mount Tō is 1,491m (4,891 ft) high and Mount Ōyama is 1,252 metres (4,108 ft) high. The western part is less often visited, but offers the opportunity of river trekking or sawanobori (a form of mountaineering).
