John Harkes (born March 8, 1967 in Kearny, New Jersey) is an American former soccer player who is currently the head coach of FC Cincinnati, a 2016 expansion team in the United Soccer League. Harkes was the first American ever to play in the English Premier League, and the second American to score at Wembley Stadium. He is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. He appeared in two FIFA World Cup tournaments, and won two MLS Cup titles with D.C. United, and was the second American footballer to appear in the final of a major English tournament since Julian Sturgis in 1876. Harkes is of Scottish descent.
A mainstay in the US national team midfield for most of the 1990s, Harkes was named the team's "Captain for Life" by then head coach Steve Sampson before having that title stripped from him by Sampson soon after. Harkes ended his national team career with 90 caps and 6 goals. Harkes was formerly a color commentator for the MLS on ESPN, since being replaced by Taylor Twellman. He called matches in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup with JP Dellacamera, and at the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Ian Darke.
Bob Ley (/ˈliː/; born March 16, 1955) is a sports anchor and reporter for ESPN. A multiple Emmy Award-winner, he is the longest tenured on-air employee of the network, having joined ESPN just three days after the network's 1979 launch.
Ley grew up in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where he attended Bloomfield High School. He got his start in broadcasting as a sportscaster and program director at WSOU at Seton Hall University, and interned as a production staffer at WOR-AM in New York City. After graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, Ley worked several minor broadcasting jobs, including public address announcer with the New York Cosmos soccer team, before landing his first major position with ESPN just three days after the network's launch in 1979.
In 1980, Ley hosted the first televised NCAA Selection Show, though the airing would switch to CBS two years later.
Ley currently hosts ESPN's investigative program Outside the Lines. He did host SportsCenter for much of his career at ESPN, returning on August 9, 2004 to host an "old school" edition with longtime broadcasting partner Charley Steiner. He is the primary studio host for ESPN's telecasts of major international professional soccer tournaments such as the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, and the 2012 UEFA European Championship.
