Numeral (linguistics)

In linguistics, a numeral is a member of a word class (or sometimes even a part of speech) designating numbers, such as the English word 'two' and the compound 'seventy-seven'.

Identifying numerals

Numerals may be attributive, as in two dogs, or pronominal, as in I saw two (of them).

Many words of different parts of speech indicate number or quantity. Quantifiers do not enumerate, or designate a specific number, but give another, often less specific, indication of amount. Examples are words such as every, most, least, some, etc. There are also number words which enumerate but are not a distinct part of speech, such as 'dozen', which is a noun, 'first', which is an adjective, or 'twice', which is an adverb. Numerals enumerate, but in addition have distinct grammatical behavior: when a numeral modifies a noun, it may replace the article: the/some dogs played in the park → twelve dogs played in the park. (Note that *dozen dogs played in the park is not grammatical, so 'dozen' is not a numeral.)

Absolute zero

Absolute zero is the lower limit of the thermodynamic temperature scale, a state at which the enthalpy and entropy of a cooled ideal gas reaches its minimum value, taken as 0. The theoretical temperature is determined by extrapolating the ideal gas law; by international agreement, absolute zero is taken as −273.15° on the Celsius scale (International System of Units), which equates to −459.67° on the Fahrenheit scale (United States customary units or Imperial units). The corresponding Kelvin and Rankine temperature scales set their zero points at absolute zero by definition.

It is commonly thought of as the lowest temperature possible, but it is not the lowest enthalpy state possible, because all real substances begin to depart from the ideal gas when cooled as they approach the change of state to liquid, and then to solid; and the sum of the enthalpy of vaporization (gas to liquid) and enthalpy of fusion (liquid to solid) exceeds the ideal gas's change in enthalpy to absolute zero. In the quantum-mechanical description, matter (solid) at absolute zero is in its ground state, the point of lowest internal energy.

Steve Kimock

Steve Kimock (born October 5, 1955) is an American rock musician and guitarist.

In San Francisco and with Zero

Kimock was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, United States. In the mid 1970s, Kimock moved from Pennsylvania to the San Francisco Bay Area, to play guitar with the folk-rock group The Goodman Brothers. In 1979, after a stint with Martin Fierro in the salsa band the Underdogs, Kimock joined the Heart of Gold Band featuring Keith and Donna Godchaux plus their drummer Greg Anton.

In 1984, along with Anton, and John Cipollina formerly of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Kimock co-founded the psychedelic rock ensemble Zero, through which he became known nationally. With the addition of Judge Murphy in 1991, Zero departed from their largely instrumental format and recorded Chance in a Million, their most successful album to date, featuring songs penned by Grateful Dead lyricist, Robert Hunter. Zero continued to tour and release records until 2000. Keeping with their improvisational theme, various lineups included many notable musicians such as Chip Roland, Melvin Seals, Liam Hanrahan, Pete Sears, Bobby Vega, Nicky Hopkins and Vince Welnick.

Greg Anton

Greg Anton is a drummer, composer and co-founding member, with guitarist Steve Kimock, of the band Zero. Greg is also a writer and practicing attorney.

Biography

Greg was born in Hartford, Connecticut (August 8, 1949). His mother Shirley was a sculptor/painter, his father Paul, a college professor. Greg has five children and lives with his wife Holly Anton in Sonoma County, California.

Education

Greg received a BA with honors in philosophy from Ohio University in 1971. His undergraduate thesis: "A Phenomenological Analysis of Music", was published by Ohio University Press. He continued studying philosophy in a Masters program at San Francisco State University, then went on to receive his Juris Doctorate degree at the Seattle University School of Law (formerly the University of Puget Sound Law School).

Literary career

Greg's first novel, "Face the Music", was published on December 1, 2014 by Plus One Press.

The novel "Face the Music" is a fictional story about a love song called "Stephanie". In 2014 Greg composed a song by the same name with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and recorded it with Steve Kimock, Melvin Seals, Tim Hockenberry and Robin Sylvester.
