Police have identified a man who was caught on CCTV punching a bus driver after refusing to pay his fare.

Less than 24 hours after police published stills of the man who allegedly assaulted the ACTION bus driver in Fyshwick more than a month ago, tip offs from the Canberra community helped them to identify the alleged offender.

No charges have been laid against the man yet and investigations are ongoing.

The man left the scene on Wollongong Street before officers arrived.
