As soon as I heard about the Aviarios Del Caribe sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica I knew it would be perfect for the Cute Show. It's the world's only sloth orphanage, home to over a hundred very sleepy urchins whose lives have been saved by legendary sloth whisperer Judy Arroyo.
Sloths are fantastically weird animals, the junkies of the jungle who seem to spend their lives either nodding off or scratching and occasionally eating a bean or two before drifting back to what looks like a blissful sleep.
The babies are especially helpless and comical and I fell in love with them immediately. So I cut a few choice clips together to show my old colleague VBS UK producer Vida Toombs and Cute Show creator Amy Kellner and posted the video on my Vimeo page. To my surprise the clip went viral and was watched by a million people in a week. Clearly I was not alone in thinking that these animals had super squee powers. So here is my Cute Show about the sloths, the perfect prelude to a sneaky daytime nap.
If you fall for these animals like I did then you can join the sanctuary's volunteer programme. Trainee sloth wranglers get to feed the sloths and help exercise and potty train the babies. The sanctuary runs on donations and voluntary help so you can do your bit by helping these vulnerable creatures whose jungle home is being slowly destroyed by pesticides, sold off to US real estate agencies and sliced up by roads and power lines.

Cute Baby Sloths Learn To Climb

A GROUP of doe-eyed sloths learn to climb by scaling and then swinging from the back of a rocking chair. Shot in May, this adorable footage was filmed by zoologist and broadcaster Lucy Cooke during a visit to the Toucan Rescue Ranch in Costa Rica. The wildlife rehabilitation centre uses a rocking chair to help teach the orphaned baby sloths how to climb – as the swaying motion is similar to a tree. Lucy, who has been called the ‘Spielberg' of sloth documentaries, has released a calendar dedicated to the super cute mammals.

Sloth
Sloths (/ˈsloʊθ/ SLOHTH, /ˈslɒθ/ SLOTH) are medium-sized mammals belonging to the families Megalonychidae (two-toed sloth) and Bradypodidae (three-toed sloth), classified into six species.
They are part of the order Pilosa and are therefore related to anteaters, which sport a similar set of specialized claws. Extant sloths are arboreal (tree-dwelling) residents of the jungles of Central and South America, and are known for being slow-moving, and hence named "sloths". Extinct sloth species include a few species of aquatic sloths and many ground sloths, some of which attained the size of elephants.
Sloths make a good habitat for other organisms, and a single sloth may be home to moths, beetles, cockroaches, ciliates, fungi, and algae.
Taxonomy and names
The sloth's taxonomic suborder is Folivora, sometimes also called Phyllophaga (Owen, 1842) or Tardigrada (Latham and Davies, 1795). The first two names both mean "leaf-eaters"; derived from Latin and Greek, respectively. Names for the animals used by tribes in Ecuador include ritto, rit, and ridette, mostly forms of the word "sleep", "eat", and "dirty" from Tagaeri tribe of Huaorani.

Plot: When a turn of the century prison reformatory is slated for demolition, a grisly discovery is made. Baby Sloth Sanctuary In Costa Rica: The Cute Show
As soon as I heard about the Aviarios Del Caribe sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica I knew it would be perfect for the Cute Show. It's the world's only sloth orphanage, home to over a hundred very sleepy urchins whose lives have been saved by legendary sloth whisperer Judy Arroyo. Sloths are fantastically weird animals, the junkies of the jungle who seem to spend their lives either nodding off or scratching and occasionally eating a bean or two before drifting back to what looks like a blissful sleep. The babies are especially helpless and comical and I fell in love with them immediately. Shot in May, this adorable footage was filmed by zoologist and broadcaster Lucy Cooke during a visit to the Toucan Rescue Ranch in Costa Rica. As soon as I heard about the Aviarios Del Caribe sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica I knew it would be perfect for the Cute Show. It's the world's only sloth orphana...
As soon as I heard about the Aviarios Del Caribe sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica I knew it would be perfect for the Cute Show. It's the world's only sloth orphanage, home to over a hundred very sleepy urchins whose lives have been saved by legendary sloth whisperer Judy Arroyo.
Sloths are fantastically weird animals, the junkies of the jungle who seem to spend their lives either nodding off or scratching and occasionally eating a bean or two before drifting back to what looks like a blissful sleep.
The babies are especially helpless and comical and I fell in love with them immediately. So I cut a few choice clips together to show my old colleague VBS UK producer Vida Toombs and Cute Show creator Amy Kellner and posted the video on my Vimeo page. To my surprise the clip went viral and was watched by a million people in a week. Clearly I was not alone in thinking that these animals had super squee powers. So here is my Cute Show about the sloths, the perfect prelude to a sneaky daytime nap.
If you fall for these animals like I did then you can join the sanctuary's volunteer programme. Trainee sloth wranglers get to feed the sloths and help exercise and potty train the babies. The sanctuary runs on donations and voluntary help so you can do your bit by helping these vulnerable creatures whose jungle home is being slowly destroyed by pesticides, sold off to US real estate agencies and sliced up by roads and power lines.

Shot in May, this adorable footage was filmed by zoologist and broadcaster Lucy Cooke during a visit to the Toucan Rescue Ranch in Costa Rica. The wildlife rehabilitation centre uses a rocking chair to help teach the orphaned baby sloths how to climb – as the swaying motion is similar to a tree. Lucy, who has been called the ‘Spielberg' of sloth documentaries, has released a calendar dedicated to the super cute mammals.
