Russ Conway DSM (2 September 1925 – 16 November 2000) was a British popular music pianist. Conway had 20 piano instrumentals in the UK Singles Chart between 1957 and 1963, including two number one hits.
Conway was born Trevor Herbert Stanford in Bristol, England. He won a scholarship to Bristol Cathedral Choir School and was largely self-taught on piano as he whiled away hours as a youngster during a three-year term in borstal. His father then let him join the Merchant Navy.
Conscripted into the Royal Navy in 1942, he served in the Merchant Navy from 1942 to 1948, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal as signalman in a minesweeping flotilla "for distinguished service, efficiency and zeal" in clearance of mines in the Aegean and operations during the relief of Greece 1944–45. During his Navy service, he lost the tip of the third finger of his right hand while using a bread slicer. He was discharged on health grounds because of a stomach ulcer.
Conway was talent-spotted while playing in a London club, signed to EMI's Columbia label and spent the mid-1950s providing backing for artists on their roster, including Gracie Fields and Joan Regan. He recorded his first solo single "Party Pops" in 1957, a "medley of standard songs" which included "Roll the Carpet Up" and "The Westminster Waltz".

Series 2, Episode 8 The Great Russ Conway playing Sidesaddle, Bordello, etc Interesting fact; Russ' cuff-links are 18k gold grand pianos which were a gift from Liberace. Russ I buried in these. Liberace was a big fan of Russ, and had many of his LP's- they played together once. I wish they did an album together!
Composed by Russ, the single has more POKE than the album version. For my money, it's Russ' BEST up-tempo piece. But how DID he get a piano to SOUND like this? Many others tried, but none succeeded. There's MORE classic Russ on this channel...
This is one of my favourite Russ Conway tracks and one which can't be found elsewhere on YouTube so here it is. I've made no attempt to produce a video, just listen to the music.
Russ Conway's Lesson One, based on a simple children's piece, played here by Mike Thomson at the last meeting of the Russ Conway Appreciation Society. The piano was a completely natural honky-tonk instrument! You might like to know that there is a website dedicated to Russ Conway: www.russconway.co.uk
Russ Conway's classic Side Saddle - compare the two quite different sounding releases. The first is from the 1966 album Time To Play which to me sounds more polished, though not in a good way, with the result being more "easy listening" and the second is a 45rpm 7" release of the original 1959 version which for me has a real western saloon vibe occurring and generally sounds a lot more fun to my ears. Interestingly, both versions have accompaniment by Geoff Love and are exactly the same duration (1min 51secs) which made me wonder if they are both mixed and mastered from the same performance but, no - they sound too different for that. This is an old video of me playing Russ Conway's hit composition 'Roulette' on my old honky-tonk piano. I think this was rather easier to play 15 years ago than it is now!
An Oriental-themed novelty tune made famous by (the almost inimitable) Russ Conway. Here, Jon gives the tune fresh new life, with a modern twist at the end, aboard Silver Sea Cruise Lines flagship liner, the 'Silver Spirit' as she steams through the night on a luxurious voyage. Jon's surprisingly 'faithful' interpretation pays homage to Russ' attractive brilliance as an endearing and much loved British export, giving Liberace a run for his dollar (or pound, in this instance!) Originally a multi-million seller in the late 1950's, "China Tea" captures Russ Conway's compositional magic as the tune changes keys and plays to his 'honky-tonk' strengths without losing anything to the pure fun of stylistic interpretation. OK - I couldn't resist - here's yet another video of Side Saddle by Russ Conway! All I'll say is that this is the original recording with 'nowt taken out' (or put in for that matter). It's the actual record playing live as it was meant to be heard back in 1959. Enjoy.
A live theatre performance interspersed with a unique video back-drop... Jon's melodically-faithful-yet-rock-n-roll rendition of this British Russ Conway classic which charted at #1. The Screaming Skull (Full movie) 1958 - John Hudson, Peggy Webber, Russ Conway and Nicol Link: Link Facebook: Twiter: https://goo.gl/oE2y8l The Screaming Skull is a 1958 American horror film directed by Alex Nicol. The film stars John Hudson, Peggy Webber, Russ Conway, and Nicol. The film focuses on a neurotic woman who believes she is being haunted by the ghost of her new husband's previous wife. The Screaming Skull marked Nicol's directorial debut; he decided to try it because he felt that he was not acting in the roles which he wanted. The film was shot at the Huntington Hartford Estate in six weeks on a low budget, with each actor being paid $1,000. The film has received negative reception from critics and from Webber herself, though Nicol enjoyed the finished product. The film was...

Unlike many record stars whose singing career had peaked during the 1940s and 1950s, when Dorothy Squires made a surprise chart comeback with 'Say It With Flowers' in 1961 - she still had a further two decades of hit records, TV appearances and sell-out concerts to look forward to. There was unfortunately much sadness in her life too during those years - an acrimonious break up of her marriage to actor, Roger Moore, a fire which destroyed her home, battles with drink, court cases over various issues and eventually bankruptcy. Dorothy, however, was nothing if not a trouper - and her loyal fan base ensured that she would continue to perform until old age and illness took its toll. She died in 1998 aged 83. Let's not overlook the contribution that Russ Conway made to the success of 'Say I...

A rare track from Russ issued on the flip-side of his second single from back in 1957. Accompaniment from Geoff Love.
After conversing with the piano aficionado IVORIESMAN, I decided to make a video of my Sanyo Tp 1005 Turntable playing this lovely tune by Russ Conway. I first heard this tune as a FoxTrot on a Columbia 78 from the 20's.
This song has been taken directly from the original record album which I bought. You won't find a better rendition of this song on the whole of the inter-webs!
