Following my review of the Seagate Personal Cloud and its new Plex Media Server app, a lot of folks wrote in asking what Plex was all about!
In this video I explain what Plex Media Server is, show how it works, and talk about some of the things you should think about doing to get the most out of it. I also explain how you can connect a computer running the Plex Server to a Network Attached Storage device or NAS like the WD My Cloud, Seagate Personal Cloud, Synology, and others.
Plex allows you to watch your media files anywhere - both in the home and over the Internet. The server software is smart enough to know what the target device is and will convert media on the fly to work with just about anything. Media server
A media server refers either to a dedicated computer appliance or to a specialized application software, ranging from an enterprise class machine providing video on demand, to, more commonly, a small personal computer or NAS (Network Attached Storage) for the home, dedicated for storing various digital media (meaning digital videos/movies, audio/music, and picture files).
Purpose
By definition a media server is a device that simply stores and shares media. This definition is vague, and can allow several different devices to be called Media Servers. It may be a simple Network-attached storage, a Home theater PC (HTPC) running Windows XP Media Center Edition, MediaPortal or MythTV, or a commercial web server that hosts media for a large web site. In a home setting, a media server acts as an aggregator of information: video, audio, photos, books, etc. These different types of media (whether they originated on DVD, CD, digital camera, or in physical form) are stored on the media server's hard drive. Access to these is then available from a central location. It may also be used to run special applications that allow the user(s) to access the media from a remote location via the internet.

We finally solved the mystery of that crazy backplane looking thing in Jeff's new computer, celebrated Jeff's birthday with a little sumthin sumthin from House of Marley (here's a hint (https://cat5.tv/headphones) ), and also got to play with the Raspberry Pi 3 once again!
This time, the quest was to turn that Raspberry Pi 3 (https://cat5.tv/pi) into a smokin' little Plex Media Server (https://www.plex.tv/) . No more having to convert your files to play on your Western Digital set-top box! Now you can stream your video and music files to any device with the Raspberry Pi 3 acting as a hoppy little transcoder unit, ensuring it only streams compatible versions of your content... by converting it on the fly!
