After having lived in Macedonia for eighteen years, she moved to Ireland and entered the Loreto abbey. In 1946 she started the Missionaries of Charity in Indi which later became a religious congregation in 1950, the same year she began to be called Mother Teresa. The congregation is now active in 133 countries. The congregation run hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens dispensaries and mobile clinics, children’s and family counselling programs, orphanages and schools. As Muslims around the world begin preparing for a month of Ramadan fasting Thursday, many will be doing so in conditions increasingly harshened by climate change.
In some countries, the situation has got so bad that activists are asking for the topic to be tackled at Friday prayers, one calling for religious scholars to "take ownership of environmental issues."
"They [the Ulema] don’t seem to be doing it because they don’t seem to understand what is going on," Fazlun Khalid told Anadolu Agency this week.
Across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, millions have started to perform their fasts for the Islamic holy month despite displacement from extreme weather, water shortages caused by drought and heat waves, and with food prices inflated by crop failures.
Five of the 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change, according to rankings by international credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s, have large Muslim populations - Bangladesh, Senegal, Nigeria, Philippines and Indonesia.
Though the challenges vary according to each country's geography, many of those hit hardest are in the remote, rural communities of developing countries, where governments have limited resources to tackle the rapid changes.
This is the case for Muslims in northern Bangladesh -- the world’s third most vulnerable country, according to Standard & Poor’s -- where many were displaced by flash-flooding last week.
Shahidul Islam Mondol from the northern Bangladeshi town of Bogra told Anadolu Agency that his small restaurant was one of the numerous losses that the town suffered in floods.
"Ramadan is coming and I don’t know how people will do. Flood water is everywhere - in the kitchen, in the front yards, in the cultivatable lands," he said.
"People are going out of their minds trying to decide where to take shelter. In this situation, many people will not be able to perform the fasting, even if they wish."
Mominul Haq Monju, from the northern Kurigram district, said that while the waters may recede quickly, day laborers will be affected by the damage to crops.
"Because of the flood water, they have no work, they will face difficulty in observing Ramadan. Because of lack of food and money, they will suffer," said Monju.
Last year hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless by heavy flooding, which has become common in northern Bangladesh.
Reservoirs across the border in neighboring India often overspill, leading to flooding during the rainy season. But in the dryer months, they prevent water passing through to Bangladesh, leaving rivers dry and depriving locals of fish; a vital source of nutrition and income.

Albanian/Serbo-Croat
Albanian arms smugglers and Yugoslav troops have traded fire at several Kosovo border points, leaving at least four smugglers dead.
There are also reports of clashes elsewhere in the rebellious province, where ethnic Albanians are fighting for independence from Serbia.
The Kosovan authorities say they have confiscated large quantities of arms and ammunition following clashes in the border village of Vrbnica, 70 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of Pristina.
There are a number of mountain passes that Albanian smugglers use to get arms across the border into Kosovo.
Policing them from the air and on the ground is a hard task for the Yugoslav forces.
When they spot suspected smugglers, the information is quickly relayed back and troops seal off the area.
This was the end of the line for two smugglers at Kosare, where they were gunned down by Yugoslav forces.
In the firefight, several of their horses were killed as well.
The weapons seized included semi-automatic rifles and land mines.
Troops said it was the first time they had seized land mines from ethnic Albanian smugglers.
The Serb commander criticised Albania, accusing it of allowing smugglers a free rein to trade in arms.

"This is the one of the hardest and one of the most unaccessible border crossings. The terrorists from Kosovo cross into Albania. Albania then accepts them, supports them and give them weapons. Then they return to Kosovo."

In the army barracks at Djakovica, the Serb military showed off their haul of captured weapons.
They are also holding one alleged smuggler.
The man apparently had three horses loaded with weapons.

These weapons are probably only a small percentage of arms already be in the hands of separatists fighting in Kosovo.
And while the United States and the European Union try to find some middle ground between the two sides, the fighting looks set to continue.

Albanian/Serbo-Croat Albanian arms smugglers and Yugoslav troops have traded fire at several Kosovo border points, leaving at least four smugglers dead. There are also reports of clashes elsewhere in the rebellious province, where ethnic Albanians are fighting for independence from Serbia. The Kosovan authorities say they have confiscated large quantities of arms and ammunition following clashes in the border village of Vrbnica, 70 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of Pristina. There are a number of mountain passes that Albanian smugglers use to get arms across the border into Kosovo. Policing them from the air and on the ground is a hard task for the Yugoslav forces. The turret is also a rotating weapon platform. This platform can be mounted on a fortified building or structure such as an anti-naval land battery, or on a combat vehicle, a naval ship, or a military aircraft.
Turrets may be armed with one or more machine guns, automatic cannons, large-calibre guns, or missile launchers. It may be manned or remotely controlled, and is often armoured. A small turret, or sub-turret on a larger one, is called a cupola. The term cupola also describes rotating turrets that carry no weapons but instead sighting devices, as in the case of tank commanders. A finial is an extremely small sub-turret or sub-sub-turret mounted on a cupola turret.
The protection provided by the turret may be against battle damage, or against the weather conditions and general environment in which the weapon or its crew will be operating. As Muslims around the world begin preparing for a month of Ramadan fasting Thursday, many will be doing so in conditions increasingly harshened by climate change.
In some countries, the situation has got so bad that activists are asking for the topic to be tackled at Friday prayers, one calling for religious scholars to "take ownership of environmental issues."
"They [the Ulema] don’t seem to be doing it because they don’t seem to understand what is going on," Fazlun Khalid told Anadolu Agency this week.
Across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, millions have started to perform their fasts for the Islamic holy month despite displacement from extreme weather, water shortages caused by drought and heat waves, and with food prices inflated by crop failures.
Five of the 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change, according to rankings by international credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s, have large Muslim populations - Bangladesh, Senegal, Nigeria, Philippines and Indonesia.
Though the challenges vary according to each country's geography, many of those hit hardest are in the remote, rural communities of developing countries, where governments have limited resources to tackle the rapid changes.
This is the case for Muslims in northern Bangladesh -- the world’s third most vulnerable country, according to Standard & Poor’s -- where many were displaced by flash-flooding last week.
Shahidul Islam Mondol from the northern Bangladeshi town of Bogra told Anadolu Agency that his small restaurant was one of the numerous losses that the town suffered in floods.
"Ramadan is coming and I don’t know how people will do. Flood water is everywhere - in the kitchen, in the front yards, in the cultivatable lands," he said.
"People are going out of their minds trying to decide where to take shelter. In this situation, many people will not be able to perform the fasting, even if they wish."
Mominul Haq Monju, from the northern Kurigram district, said that while the waters may recede quickly, day laborers will be affected by the damage to crops.
"Because of the flood water, they have no work, they will face difficulty in observing Ramadan. Because of lack of food and money, they will suffer," said Monju.
Last year hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless by heavy flooding, which has become common in northern Bangladesh.
Reservoirs across the border in neighboring India often overspill, leading to flooding during the rainy season. But in the dryer months, they prevent water passing through to Bangladesh, leaving rivers dry and depriving locals of fish; a vital source of nutrition and income.

Albanian arms smugglers and Yugoslav troops have traded fire at several Kosovo border points, leaving at least four smugglers dead.

There are a number of mountain passes that Albanian smugglers use to get arms across the border into Kosovo.
Policing them from the air and on the ground is a hard task for the Yugoslav forces.
When they spot suspected smugglers, the information is quickly relayed back and troops seal off the area.
This was the end of the line for two smugglers at Kosare, where they were gunned down by Yugoslav forces.
In the firefight, several of their horses were killed as well.
The weapons seized included semi-automatic rifles and land mines.
Troops said it was the first time they had seized land mines from ethnic Albanian smugglers.
The Serb commander criticised Albania, accusing it of allowing smugglers a free rein to trade in arms.

"This is the one of the hardest and one of the most unaccessible border crossings. The terrorists from Kosovo cross into Albania. Albania then accepts them, supports them and give them weapons. Then they return to Kosovo."

In the army barracks at Djakovica, the Serb military showed off their haul of captured weapons.
They are also holding one alleged smuggler.
The man apparently had three horses loaded with weapons.

"This is the first time I have done it. I went to Albania to buy cigarettes and try to take them back. There were none, so I didn't want to come back with nothing, so I took back the weapons."

These weapons are probably only a small percentage of arms already be in the hands of separatists fighting in Kosovo.
And while the United States and the European Union try to find some middle ground between the two sides, the fighting looks set to continue.

Albanian/Serbo-Croat
Albanian arms smugglers and Yugoslav troops have traded fire at several Kosovo border points, leaving at least four smugglers dead.
There are also reports of clashes elsewhere in the rebellious province, where ethnic Albanians are fighting for independence from Serbia.
The Kosovan authorities say they have confiscated large quantities of arms and ammunition following clashes in the border village of Vrbnica, 70 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of Pristina.
There are a number of mountain passes that Albanian smugglers use to get arms across the border into Kosovo.
Policing them from the air and on the ground is a hard task for the Yugoslav forces.
When they spot suspected smugglers, the information is quickly relayed back and troops seal off the area.
This was the end of the line for two smugglers at Kosare, where they were gunned down by Yugoslav forces.
In the firefight, several of their horses were killed as well.
The weapons seized included semi-automatic rifles and land mines.
Troops said it was the first time they had seized land mines from ethnic Albanian smugglers.
The Serb commander criticised Albania, accusing it of allowing smugglers a free rein to trade in arms.

"This is the one of the hardest and one of the most unaccessible border crossings. The terrorists from Kosovo cross into Albania. Albania then accepts them, supports them and give them weapons. Then they return to Kosovo."

In the army barracks at Djakovica, the Serb military showed off their haul of captured weapons.
They are also holding one alleged smuggler.
The man apparently had three horses loaded with weapons.

"This is the first time I have done it. I went to Albania to buy cigarettes and try to take them back. There were none, so I didn't want to come back with nothing, so I took back the weapons."

These weapons are probably only a small percentage of arms already be in the hands of separatists fighting in Kosovo.
And while the United States and the European Union try to find some middle ground between the two sides, the fighting looks set to continue.

Republic of Macedonia is a landlocked Balkan country of about 2 million, one of the regions of the former Yugoslavia. To the United States, it’s also the newest open front in a fomenting regime change to establish its political, economy and military control. Macedonia's ethnic divide between Albanians and Macedonians came to a head on May 9, when an attack by Albanian gunmen in the town of Kumanovo left at least 18 people dead. A Macedonian opposition member alleged that the attack was faked, and that the government had attacked itself. Earlier, violent opposition protests in the country's capital on May 6 injured 38 police officers and at least two protesters. However, the conflict has been predominantly shown as one between an authoritarian government and a democratic opposition in Western media and political discourse.
According to the official western version of these events, tens of thousands of demonstrators have took to the streets of the capital, Skopje, to demand Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski’s resignation because the opposition Social Democratic Union of Macedonia and its leader Zoran Zaev have accused the government of corruption and wiretapping 20,000 people, including politicians, journalists and religious leaders. Meanwhile, common Western media have stated that Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski is an authoritarian leader. It has become the public start of full-scale international pressure on legal Macedonian government.
In turn, the US has voiced its concerns over so-called ‘political crisis’ in Macedonia and has called on the government to probe opposition claims of corruption. "We remain in close consultation with the Macedonian government and with political leaders to convey our concerns about the current political crisis," the State Department's press office director Jeff Rathke told reporters. Unfortunately, he forgot to add that US decisively performed a same kind of consultation in Ukraine during the coup in 2014. Washington also called on all sides "to respect the rights of freedom of assembly and peaceful protest," the commonplace to justify any illegal actions of anti-government forces.
Although the Macedonian opposition talks of democracy and anti-corruption campaigns, its actual political discourse, such as in the prominent Societas Civilis group which has received US government funding, focuses primarily on issues of ethnicity and nationalism. Particular emphasis is given to the study of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where ethnic groups live in a separated country which is on track to EU and NATO membership. The only difference with the situation in Ukraine is that US-sponsored interests favor the recognition of the Albanian minority in Macedonia. Albania is a US ally and NATO member. The concept of "Greater Albania," an expansion of the Albanian state into areas of other countries where ethnic Albanians live has also become more prominent. The organized faction of the Macedonian opposition, the SDSM, is the successor to Macedonia's communist-era League of Communists of Macedonia. The SDSM now supports the idea of "Macedonia as full-fledged member of NATO and EU" according to the party's official website.
Speaking on a visit to Serbia on Friday, Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said events in Macedonia were “unfolding against the background of the government’s refusal to join the policy of sanctions against Russia and the vigorous support Skopje gave to the Turkish Stream gas pipeline project”. Russia’s foreign ministry on Saturday followed Mr Lavrov’s comments with a statement citing Serbian media reports of the arrest of a Montenegrin citizen whom “assisted Kosovo-Albanian extremists” in Macedonia. Turkish Stream is a scheme that Moscow is promoting to replace the South Stream project to bring Russian gas into southeast Europe which was abandoned in December after EU opposition. WIRETAP WARS IN MACEDONIA
Macedonian politics has been in a vicious cycle lately. The situation started with opposition leader Zoran Zaev’s release of illegally recorded phone calls between high ranking government officials. Zaev accused Macedonian Prime Minister Nicola Gruevski of corruption and electioral fraud using information from the wiretaps. Gruevski denied the accusations and state prosecutors accused Zaev illegal wiretapping and organising a coup against the current government. In response, Zaev released another wiretap accusing Gruevski of covering up the death of a 22-year-old man who was killed by a police officer in 2011. Afterwards, 2000 Macedonians took part in protests against Gruevski’s government.When the police intervened in the protest, it turned into a clash. The demonstrators set rubbish containers on fire and threw stones at police officers. In the second day of the protests, Zaev released another wiretap and accused Gruevski covering up death of a journalist in 2013. This time the protesters demanded that Gruevski resign.
KUMANOVO OPERATION
While politics has been in turmoil, borders have also not stayed quiet in Macedonia. This time fighting did not take place on the streets but in Kumanovo near the Serbian and Kosovan border. Macedonian police conducted a raid against an armed splinter group from the dismantled Kosovo Liberation Army on Saturday. Police believe this group entered Kumanovo from the Kosovan border to attack civilians and government targets. The police and the interlopers engaged in an armed battle which resulted in the death of 8 police officers and 14 gunmen.The raid ended with many buildings destroyed, cars damaged and people injured. After police took control of Kumanovo, a hunt for other suspects began in Macedonia. On Monday, 30 people were arrested in the country, most of them Kosovar nationals. Investigators believe that these suspects planned attacks on Macedonia with the aim of the creation of a Greater Albania.
RESIGNATIONS: A BLOW TO GRUEVSKI
The clashes in Kumanovo further heightened political tensions that were already present due to the release of the wiretaps connected to the deaths of innocent civilians. Many Macedonians have started to demand the resignation of the Prime Minister Gruevski as a result. As protesters prepare to go to the streets to demonstrate against Gruevski, both Macedonia’s interior minister and the head of intelligence have resigned. The resignation of these two important figures in Macedonian politics is regarded as a blow to Prime Minister Gruevski. However, these resignations have not eased the civil unrest or opposition to Gruevski’s government.

Ten of these areas are included in this year’s ranking on the ease of doing business: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, getting credit, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency. Doing Business also measures labor market regulation, which is not included in this year’s ranking.
Data in Doing Business 2016 are current as of June 1, 2015. The indicators are used to analyze economic outcomes and identify what reforms of business regulation have worked, where and why. This year’s Doing Business report continues a two-year process of introducing improvements in 8 of 10 Doing Business indicator sets—to complement the emphasis on the efficiency of regulation with a greater focus on its quality.

Investments for reaching a higher economic growth -- this is the major expectation from the second Global Investment Summit. Managers from world renowned companies and Macedonian businessmen came to Ohrid. Increasing the competitiveness is in the focus. Martin Pushevski is reporting from the Summit.
The business elite has gathered in Ohrid, for the second Global Investment Summit in organization of Macedonia 2025. It is an organization established by esteemed and successful businessmen from our Diaspora, with a mission: development of the domestic economy, increasing its competitiveness, stimulating investments and exports, entrepreneurship and innovation development. More than 350 participants are present: Macedonian businessmen, bankers, university professors, and globally high ranked companies such as Motorola, Philips, Microsoft, Telus, Bombardier, MindTree from India. Around 100 bilateral meeting have already been scheduled.
Zoran Martinovski: "We encourage the Macedonian companies to utilize this Summit for widening their network on a global scale. "
Zhivko Mukaetov: "Macedonia 2025 has become a serious "bridge" for cooperation among the Macedonian business community and the business community of Macedonians living abroad, and I think this will lead to future economic growth. "
"Our mission is to build a stronger nation by increasing the competitiveness of the Macedonian economy. Our mission is ambitious, yet feasible' was the message of the president and founder of Macedonia 2025 -- Mike Zafirovski.
Mike Zafirovski: "I wish that Macedonia succeeds, I would like to share contacts, I would like to see the businesses prosper, and how will I measure our success? When I see a lot of networking, motivated companies implementing new practices, when I see foreign investors that will make a decision to come back and invest.."
Macedonia is marking an advancement regarding the competitiveness, the investment, in the rankings of "Doing business" and of Forbes, was the message of the Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski to the attendees. He has pointed out that the Free Economic Zones, the openness to the market of 650 million consumers, as well as the highly educated workforce promotes Macedonia as a genuine place for their investments.
Prime Minister Gruevski: "All that is being produced in Macedonia is being exported without paying customs duty in all countries of Europe, and more and more countries from America, Asia consider Macedonia as a gateway to reach Europe; where they would produce and sell to Europe and further.
Minister Samak: "Yes, there are several foreign managers who are first time in Macedonia and we discuss in continuation over their development plans and of the opportunities we can offer them."
Keynote speakers at the Summit in Ohrid are: Sandy Ogg from Blackstone, Christopher Galvin from Motorola, John Bitove from Obelysk, Hubertus Van Deer Vaart from SEAF and Samih Elhage from Nokia. Representatives from CNN, Financial Times, Forbes are here in Ohrid, that as a courtesy speaks of the greatness of this Summit.

The ensemble “Tanec” is a symbol of the Macedonian folklore, tradition and culture for about 6 decades; it is an ambassador that unselfishly shares and presents Macedonian tradition in the country and abroad.
For 6 decades “Tanec” has been a mobile museum of the most beautiful, precious and ancient Macedonian material and nonmaterial folklore heritage, costumes, with unique embroideries that represents the core of Macedonian identity deeply curved in the conscience of Macedonians. Some of the costumes have more than 150 years.
The ensemble of the traditional folk dances and songs “Tanec” was created in 1949, by “Decree of the Macedonian Government”, as a need to create institution which will preserve, take care and enrich the Macedonian folklore.
It is worth mentioning the first performance and presentation that “Tanec” had outside of the boundaries of its homeland, was at the The International Music Festival in Llangolend in Wales, UK in 1950, where the ensemble won the first price and at the same time won the “full score” of the jury, which was historical event both for “Tanec” and the Macedonian culture. It is worth mentioning that “full score” was given for the first time since the festival was formed.
The ensemble “Tanec” through the years, has been participating at over 4500 concerts, festivals and other events, gathering over eight million visitors.
They have been awarded numerous awards, diplomas and gratitudes among which many prestigious national awards such as: “11 Oktomvri”, “Kliment Ohridski” and “13 November” of the City of Skopje, “The Merit Order of the R. of Macedonia”.
As a proof of the good artistic quality of the dances, the songs and the costumes, stand numerous positive critics, reviews and columns written by top rated folk experts, published and broadcasted in the Macedonian and international media.
“Tanec” repertoire encompasses one of the most beautiful traditional dances and songs from all over Macedonia such as: “Nevestinsko”, “Teshkoto”, “Komitsko”, “Chifte chamche”, “Osogovka” and many others. And this is only a part of it.
-In its noble cultural mission, “Tanec” is in constant cooperation with the Macedonian emigrants at the diaspora. Therefore “Tanec” is performing in many countries where Macedonians dwell. “Tanec” is continuously helping other Macedonian folk ensembles in these countries, but primarily it is doing a tremendous work in Macedonia by handing down the folk tradition.

Kruševo is a small but picturesque town. Located in South-Western Macedonia, Kruševo is situated at an altitude of 1350 m and in this way the highest town in the Balkans. The chance guest will not be wrong if they stayle Kruševo as a museum of old architecture. The town is full of old and more recent houses built in the style of old Macedonian architecture. Each year on Ilinden day, the town wears a festival look. On the balconies and at the windows of all the houses shaggy hand woven blankets (jambolii) in all kinds of colours are exhibited. Kruševo proudly preserves the memory of the renowned Ilinden Uprising of the Macedonian people on 2nd August, 1903. Each year on Ilinden day, the town wears a festival look. On the balconies and at the windows of all the houses shaggy hand woven blankets (jambolii) in all kinds of colours are exhibited. Kruševo proudly preserves the memory of the renowned Ilinden Uprising of the Macedonian people on 2nd August, 1903. In this town, the Ilinden insurrectionists established the Kruševo Republic which only ten days later was suppressed in blood by the Turks.
The "Makedonium" monument of the Ilinden Uprising is to be found in Kruševo. There are also a number of museums of the Ilinden Uprising, a Gallery of 19th century icons, and a memorial gallery to the master of modern Macedonian painting, Nikola Martinovski, who was born in this town.
A few kilometres away from the town is the historical site of Mečkin Kamen, where the Ilinden insurrectionists fought the decisive battle against the Ottoman army. In the surrounding's there is also an artificial lake, and Kruševo continues to be a well known centre and a climatic health resort.

Macedonia is a member of the UN and the Council of Europe. Since December 2005 it has also been a candidate for joining the European Union and has applied for NATO membership.

The country is situated along the very favourable geothermal zone that starts in Hungary to the North and Italy to the West and stretches through Greece down to Turkey. However, there has not been a systematic measurement of terrestrial heat flow neither organised use of the natural resource for medical/tourist purposes. Even with a long tradition in medical use of thermal waters, the country has a limited number of active thermal spas. It is evident from the potential of the thermal resources that the approach to this economy sector should be changed in order to reach possible benefits.

The mediaeval frescos on the walls and ceilings are well preserved after five centuries. Southwest of Prilep is the ancient city of Stibera that is also known as Macedonian Pompeii. It is in a good location on an important road. The last Macedonian king, Perseus, had his military headquarters in Stibera during his struggles with Rome. In the south, just a few kilometres from the Greek border, is Bitola, at the foot of Pelister Mountain and on the edge of the fertile Pelagonija Plains. Buildings with Neo-Baroque and Renaissance facades, huge mosques and splendid diplomatic residences indicate the city’s importance. Macedonia is a wild land full of natural splendour and with a long and dramatic history that is well worth more than just a flying visit. Indeed, this visit also features a Galička wedding that is a fine example of colourful tradition and local culture.

Skopje is the capital of Macedonia and is located in the valley of the Vardar River with a dramatic history that spans many thousands of years. It forms the junction of two trading routes in southeast Europe that unites both western and eastern civilisation. The legacy of Ottoman times is omnipresent in Skopje. One of the city’s most well-preserved mosques is that of the Gazi-Isisa-Bey Djamia. In the seventeenth century it is believed that there were up to a hundred and twenty mosques in Skopje. Between the city’s mosques is the last surviving monastery in the centre of Skopje, Sveti Spas, with a fine church and wooden bell tower. Both monastery and church were built before the time of the Ottomans and eventually they had to be reduced in size because no other religious building was allowed to be larger than a mosque. The historic stone bridge of Kameni Most spans the river Vardar and unites two city districts and also the Muslim world with that of the Christian Orthodox. The massive two hundred and fourteen metre long stone bridge was built in the late fifteenth century under the rule of Sultan Mehmet the Second. In Ottoman times the bridge was a place of execution where rebels were executed in public. Skopje has become a symbol of fraternity and solidarity. A prospering city at the south-eastern end of the world!
