Films have the power to transform the way we think, the way we feel and even the way we act. Filmmaker May Taherzadeh shares her experience about using her award-winning film, ‘Mercy’s Blessing’, to inspire young people to stand up for justice and to become more aware about the choices they make. The film is inspiring change in schools and communities in more than 100 countries worldwide.
May Taherzadeh is a multi award-winning independent filmmaker who has directed documentary films in over 15 countries across 6 continents. May was born in the UK, grew up in southern Africa (Malawi, Swaziland, South Africa, Zimbabwe), is ethnically Iranian and lives in the Netherlands.
"Mercy's Blessing" (2015) marks May's debut in Short Fiction. The film has won 10 International Film Awards and enjoys the support of international organizations in Malawi such as UNICEF, UNFPA, UN Women and EU Delegation. Papo Reto, Portuguese for “Straight Talk”, formed as a citizens’ journalist collective in 2010 in response to government efforts to rid Complexo do Alemão – one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest favelas –of the drug-trafficking gang Comando Vermelho. We met the group in April as it celebrated a bittersweet victory. Thanks to Papo Reto’s reporting on the killing of 10 year-old Eduardo de Jesus, allegedly at the hands of police, the government opened a formal investigation into what happened. For the young members of Papo Reto, this is the first time they’ve seen such a display of accountability.

Papo Reto, Portuguese for “Straight Talk”, formed as a citizens’ journalist collective in 2010 in response to government efforts to rid Complexo do Alemão – one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest favelas –of the drug-trafficking gang Comando Vermelho. We met the group in April as it celebrated a bittersweet victory. Thanks to Papo Reto’s reporting on the killing of 10 year-old Eduardo de Jesus, allegedly at the hands of police, the government opened a formal investigation into what happened. For the young members of Papo Reto, this is the first time they’ve seen such a display of accountability.

Films have the power to transform the way we think, the way we feel and even the way we act. Filmmaker May Taherzadeh shares her experience about using her award-winning film, ‘Mercy’s Blessing’, to inspire young people to stand up for justice and to become more aware about the choices they make. The film is inspiring change in schools and communities in more than 100 countries worldwide.
May Taherzadeh is a multi award-winning independent filmmaker who has directed documentary films in over 15 countries across 6 continents. May was born in the UK, grew up in southern Africa (Malawi, Swaziland, South Africa, Zimbabwe), is ethnically Iranian and lives in the Netherlands.
"Mercy's Blessing" (2015) marks May's debut in Short Fiction. The film has won 10 International Film Awards and enjoys the support of international organizations in Malawi such as UNICEF, UNFPA, UN Women and EU Delegation.
