David Lloyd George: A biography
This film examines the life and times of one of Britain's most notable prime ministers of the last century. David Lloyd George was loved by millions but also distrusted by the political establishment as a maverick (not unlike his contemporary and later successor, Winston Churchill). The film will be ideal material for students of the period and the great political architects of the age. See als

III. Allegro scherzando (30:48)
IV. Lento – Allegro ma non troppo (44:26)
George Lloyd belongs to those British composers who, in spite of the growing avant-gardist trends, decided to remain in a romantic vein in spite all odds. Considered as one of the fathers of British neo-romanticism, Lloyd lived a hectic life both as composer/conductor. His Fourth Symphony is his most personal work. It is actually a parallel to Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ Sixth and to Arnell’s Third, it is to say, a “child” from World War II; conflict in which, opposed to the former composers, Lloyd did war service and nearly gets killed: during one of his patrols in the Arctic, his ship was torpedoed and he nearly drowns thanks to an oil leak. He managed to survive, yet lost most of his friends and the shell shock left him in a terrible physical and psychologic state for two years. The symphony represents a recollection of these war memories of the Arctic, and while it speaks about the darkness and despair of human soul, it remains in a romantic, accessible language.

Considered as one of the fathers of British neo-romanticism, Lloyd lived a hectic life both as composer/conductor. His Fifth Symphony is represents a contrast to his darker Fourth Symphony, almost as an answer. It was composed in Switzerland in a chalet overlooking Lake Neuchâtel, where Lloyd followed his continuous recovery from his near-death in WWII. Its pages are filled with warm and happy summer memories from those days that he and his wife spent in their home up at the border of a lake near the Swiss Alps.

Irresistible melodies from a great symphonist.
George Lloyd writes: "Like my first three symphonies, the Sixth is comparatively short. The aim is to be concise, bright and lively with a minimum of development. After I had finished the score, I showed it to one or two people who condemned it as having no contemporary significance; I suppose they thought it was not serious enough for a symphony. Perhaps I was a little naòve, but I believe it should once again be possible to say something true, that grew up out of the main traditions of Western music. It also had to have plenty of tunes, because I like music that sings and moves along in a flowing way....When the BBC first told me they would like me to write a piece for the Northern Brass Ensemble it so happened that about that time I was taking advantage of some cheap rail fares to visit various cathedrals I had never seen before. As I journeyed around the country I kept on thinking of sounds for the brass and these sounds became mixed up with the magnificent buildings I was seeing."

George Walter Selwyn Lloyd
(28 June 1913 – 3 July 1998) was a British composer. Born in St Ives, Cornwall, of part Welsh, part American ancestry, Lloyd grew up in a very musical family.
Lloyd's works include 12 symphonies and four piano concertos, two violin concertos and a cello concerto. For his three operas, Lloyd's father wrote the libretti. Lloyd also wrote four works for brass band: Royal Parks, Diversions on a Bass Theme, English Heritage and Kings Messenger. He wrote the official ship's march for the Royal Marine Band on HMS Trinidad, and later arranged the work for orchestra and for brass band. He also wrote a work for wind band: Forest of Arden. His choral-orchestral works include Pervigilium Veneris (The Vigil of Venus), A Litany and A Symphonic Mass. His chamber-works include music for solo and duet piano, brass quintet, and works for violin and piano.
Lloyd’s first opera, Iernin, was inspired by The Nine Maidens standing stones near St Columb Major, and tells the story of one of the Maidens who comes back to life as a fairy. The opera was first performed in 1934 at the Pavilion in Penzance, Cornwall. It was recorded in 1985 by the BBC Concert Orchestra, with the composer conducting and Marilyn Hill-Smith singing the title role. To mark the centenary of Lloyd's birth, the opera is to be staged by Surrey Opera, in a new production directed by Alexander Hargreaves and conducted by Surrey Opera’s Artistic Director Jonathan Butcher, in Croydon, Surrey in October 2013, with further provisional performances on 1 and 2 November in Penzance.
In 2013, the British Library acquired all of George Lloyd's autograph music manuscripts, sketches and draft scores. (Ref: Wikipedia)
The three-movement Symphony No. 7 (written in 1957-9 and orchestrated in Summer 1974) is influenced by the story of the Greek mythological figure of Proserpine. However, it is fair to assume that something more personal than the Proserpine legend lies behind this deeply moving and tragic work and perhaps it is in this symphony rather than the Fourth that Lloyd fully grapples with his horrific experiences of 1942 and gives artistic expression to his inner torment: after completing this monumental work, the composer wanted to die and was taken off to hospital. Magnificent recording in state-of-the-art surround SACD sound.
Here's the work that started it all. Back in 1977 Albany Symphony president Peter Kermani heard a BBC broadcast of Lloyd's Symphony No. 8 which absolutely enthralled him. When an opportunity struck in 1984, he dispatched Albany Symphony manager Susan Bush to London to commission a new symphony, which resulted in the wonderful Symphony No. 11 from George Lloyd. This present writer was at the premiere on October 31, 1986 and, like the rest of the audience, was absolutely captivated by the work; a piece that blended both thrills and repose, and pageantry and sentimentality-plus many memorable tunes (imagine, in this day and age, a third movement which was an elaborate and kaleidoscopic waltz!). We all believed that George Lloyd was England's greatest musical secret revealed. This work, along with several of his other symphonies, was initially released on Conifer, but Kermani and Bush were eager to make Lloyd the cornerstone of a new recording venture called Albany Records. Lloyd's association with the Albany Symphony, for whom he also wrote his Symphony No. 12 (TROY032, with Symphony No. 1), resulted in guest-conducing engagements performing more of his music (the war-time Symphony No. 4, now on TROY SACD 498, was one of Albany's first CD's). We also heard memorable interpretations of Creston's Symphony No. 3, the Randall Thompson Symphony No. 2 and a delightful series of selections from La Boutique Fantasque. By the time of his death in 1998, his output was relatively small, but the twelve Symphonies have proven to be immensely popular. We at Albany are proud to have been his friend and advocate these past twenty years, and pleased to re-release this magnificent recording in state-of-the-art multi-channel sound.

Eleventh Symphony
Albany Symphony Orchestra, George Lloyd, conductor
Review:
"...We come now to what is perhaps the most impressive symphony of all, the Eleventh, commissioned and superbly played by the Albany Symphony Orchestra, again under the composer. It is in five movements, the first on the largest scale, but it is the Lento which shows Lloyd at the height of his lyrical powers and in its passionate, expansive romanticism it reminds me of Hanson's Romantic Symphony...The scherzo is exuberantly graceful, then there is dark funeral music before the exultant, optimistic finale. The performance has all the power and freshness of discovery of a masterwork and the recording is splendidly worthy of the music...." (Gramophone)
"All of Lloyd's recorded output is worth having, and 11 is as good a place to start as any, especially in so fine a performance and recording." (American Record Guide)

The Albany Symphony Orchestra conducted by George Lloyd (1913-1998)
from Albany TROY060 (rec. 1986; SACD reissue 2006)
http://www.albanyrecords.com

See also 'Lloyd George's War', available on this channel. George Lloyd belongs to those British composers who, in spite of the growing avant-gardist trends, decided to remain in a romantic vein in spite all odds. Considered as one of the fathers of British neo-romanticism, Lloyd lived a hectic life both as composer/conductor. Even though a war incident almost kills him, he never gave up his musical abilities and overcame almost every life obstacle. His cantata The Vigil of Venus is based upon the homonym Latin poem Pervigilum Veneris, which extolls the pagan spring rites for the Roman Goddess of Love using on one hand an epic instrumentation and on the other memorable leitmotivs, rhythms, melodies and sound effects.

If you love the Holst suites for band, then this one is for you.
Geoffrey Band, English bandmaster extraordinaire provides the following notes: "I had known of George Lloyd for some years, recognizing him as a composer of readily communicable music with a clear and personal style, but it was not until May 1985 that we met, in Copenhagen, where the European Brass Band Championships were being held in the Tivoli Gardens Concert Hall. George Lloyd had been commissioned by the BBC to write the set work - Royal Parks. At once his sense of involvement and lively interest in all that was going on, plus his obvious determination not to miss any of the performances of his music in order to make his own assessment and adjudication, endeared George Lloyd to all who were present...Just one year later an even more exacting and technically challenging work was commissioned for the Mineworkers' National Brass Band Contest held on November 1986. This was Diversions on a Bass Theme...The quintet of pieces on this recording ends with the work which for many will be adjudged to be George Lloyd's outstanding brass band work. English Heritage was commissioned for English Heritage (the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England). Lloyd was an inspired choice. The sense of historic significance inherent in ensuring the preservation of England's fine buildings of the past drew from the composer music which seems to capture the essence of Olde England."

George Lloyd writes: "In the autumn of 1945, after some three and a half years of illness, my wife and I were able to travel to Switzerland where we lived at her home in the mountains. There, with much difficulty, I wrote my Fourth Symphony. During the spring of 1947 we moved to Corceleettes, on the Lake of Neuchâtel. By the edge of the lake we found two rooms on top of a barn to live in; alongside was a room where I could work, and there I wrote a large part of my Fifth Symphony. The summer was wonderful, the hottest in living memory; day after day the sun poured down. I was beginning to write more easily and to think a little more clearly. The five months we spent by the lake were probably the happiest of our lives and I believe something of that got into what I was writing."

Review:
"...His Fifth Symphony was written in Switzerland while the composer was slowly recovering from serious wartime injuries. The musical language is engaging, the moods of the five movements range form "Pastorale" to "Lamento," and the orchestration is colorful, often luscious. The orchestra plays beautifully under the composer's direction. Mr. Lloyd may not be a rugged individualist, but he writes expressively and from the heart." (New York Times)

It was 30 years ago that this writer first heard the music of George Lloyd. It was a BBC Radio broadcast of the Eighth Symphony. I remember the event clearly. Here was this gorgeous, romantic music and no one Knew among collectors had ever heard the name of the composer or a note of his music. Then the great Lyrita recording was released, and this wonderful composer was out of the shadows. Now, years later, we have the final installment in the composer conducted series of his symphonies. They are now all available. Composed mostly in 1961, the symphony was not orchestrated until several years later. "When I started this work I wanted to write something vivacious, with brilliant coloring and no particular program; this would be in contrast to my previous occupation with the Proserpine legend that had turned into my Seventh Symphony and had become one of my most deeply felt." Of course, the George Lloyd enthusiast will look forward to this disc. However, the music of George Lloyd, no matter what the composition, offers music that can be enjoyed by a larger public. Lloyd makes his music sing and it does so in magnificent fashion in this lovely new performance.
