Maxwell (unit)

The maxwell, abbreviated as Mx, is the compound derived CGS unit of magnetic flux. The unit used to be called a line. The unit name honours James Clerk Maxwell, who presented the unified theory of electromagnetism, and was established by the International Electrotechnical Commission in 1930.

The weber is the related SI unit.

In a magnetic field of strength one gauss, one maxwell is the total flux across a surface of one square centimetre perpendicular to the field.

Maxwell Santos Silva (born 23 April 1979) is a Brazilian football player who is now playing in South China. He plays as a forward and joined the team on 5 September 2007.

On 28 December 2008, SCAA's Steven Lo said on his blog that Maxwell will be leaving SCAA during the January 2009 transfer window for either Australia's A League or Dubai, where he will receive double his current SCAA salary. He finally moved back to his former club Arabi Club in Dubai.

Tales of Xillia is a Japanese role-playing game released for the PlayStation 3 on September 7, 2011 in Japan. The game was localized in North America on August 6, 2013 and Europe on August 9, 2013. Its sequel Tales of Xillia 2 was released on November 1, 2012. The protagonists in Tales of Xillia are designed by Mutsumi Inomata and Kōsuke Fujishima. The new protagonist, Ludger Will Kresnik, in Tales of Xillia 2 is designed by Daigo Okumura. The world of Tales of Xillia was divided in two parts by Maxwell; the two parts are Rieze Maxia and Elympios. Rieze Maxia consists of two countries, Auj Oule and Rashugal. After the events of Tales of Xillia, Rieze Maxia is united under one ruler and the barrier separating Rieze Maxia and Elympios no longer exists, allowing the two sides to start diplomatic relations and trading.

In Tales of Xillia, Jude Mathis meets and accompanies Milla Maxwell who intends to destroy a weapon called the Lance of Kresnik due to it being powered by a spyrix; a power source which absorbs spirits to create power. Tales of Xillia 2 takes place a year later and follows Ludger Will Kresnik who is hired by Spirius Corporation to destroy parallel dimensions because the spirit Origin is unable to sustain the abundance of souls. In order to destroy alternative universes, he must destroy the divergence catalyst which can reside within the object or living being whom caused a point of divergence.

Maurice (emperor)

Maurice (Latin: Flavius Mauricius Tiberius Augustus; Greek: Φλάβιος Μαυρίκιος Τιβέριος Αὔγουστος) (539 – 27 November 602) was Byzantine Emperor from 582 to 602.

A prominent general in his youth, Maurice fought with success against the Sassanid Persians. Once he became Emperor, he brought the war with Persia to a victorious conclusion: the Empire's eastern border in the Caucasus was vastly expanded and for the first time in nearly two centuries the Byzantines were no longer obliged to pay the Persians thousands of pounds of gold annually for peace.

Maurice campaigned extensively in the Balkans against the Avars – pushing them back across the Danube by 599. He also conducted campaigns across the Danube, the first Emperor to do so in over two hundred years. In the West, he established two large semi-autonomous provinces called exarchates, ruled by exarchs, or viceroys, of the emperor.

In Italy, Maurice established the Exarchate of Ravenna in 584, the first real effort by the Empire to halt the advance of the Lombards. With the creation of the Exarchate of Africa in 590, he further solidified the empire's hold on the western Mediterranean.

Maurice (novel)

Maurice is a novel by E. M. Forster. A tale of same-sex love in early 20th-century England, it follows Maurice Hall from his schooldays, through university and beyond. It was written in 1913–1914, and revised in 1932 and 1959–1960. Although it was shown to selected friends, such as Christopher Isherwood, it was only published in 1971 after Forster's death. Forster did not seek to publish it during his lifetime, believing it unpublishable during that period.

Forster was close friends with the poet Edward Carpenter, and upon visiting his Derbyshire home in 1912, was motivated to write Maurice. The relationship between Carpenter and his partner, George Merrill, was the inspiration for that between Maurice and Alec Scudder.

Forster resisted publication because of public and legal attitudes to same-sex love – a note found on the manuscript read: "Publishable, but worth it?". Forster was particularly keen that his novel should have a happy ending, but knew that this would make the book too controversial. However, by the time he died, British attitudes, and law, had changed.

Maurice (horse)

Maurice, (Japanese: モーリス, foaled 2 March 2011) is a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse. After showing promise as a two-year-old he disappointed in 2014, being well-beaten in all four of his races. In 2015 he emerged as one of the best milers in the world with an unbeaten record of six wins from six races. After two minor wins early in the year he recorded his first important success in the Lord Derby Challenge Trophy before taking the Grade I Yasuda Kinen. He returned in autumn to win the Mile Championship and then defeated a strong international field in the Hong Kong Mile. His performances in 2015 saw him named Best Japanese Sprinter or Miler and Japanese Horse of the Year.

Background

Maurice is a bay horse with a white star and four white socks bred in Japan by Togawa Bokujo.

He is from the first crop of foals sired by Screen Hero, the winner of the 2008 Japan Cup: others from the same crop have included the Arima Kinen winner Gold Actor. Maurice's dam Mejiro Frances showed no ability on the track, failing to win or place in eight starts, but has produced three minor winners. She was a great-granddaughter of Mejiro Bosatsu whose other descendants have included the Yushun Himba winner Mejiro Dober.
