In A World Music and The Nirks Present “Intro to Stars: Color and Temperature.” This is the prequel to our upcoming video and new song “Meet the Stars!” Join the Sun as he tells us about the colors and temperatures of the stars. He’s brought some of his star friends along to help! His friends include Orionis C, Bellatrix, Altair, Fornacis, Kaus Borealis and Mirach. Each one is a different color and temperature and each one fits one of the 7 types of stars. In this video the Sun will explain that Main Sequence stars (what most stars are) are classified into 7 types. The Morgan-Keenan System (introduced in 1943 by William Wilson Morgan, Philip C. Keenan) divides the stars by color and temperature. And assigns them each a letter. From Hottest to Coolest, O, B, A, F, G, K, M. O stars Are the hottest and are blue (hotter than 30,000 Kelvin (a unit of measuring temperature used by scientists (Celsius is 273.15 degrees less than Kelvin), B stars are bluish white and are still quite hot (10,000-30,000 K), A Stars are White and are between 7,500 to 10,000 K, F stars are yellowish white and are between 6,000 and 7,500 K, G stars are yellow like our sun and are between 5,200 and 6,000 K, K stars are orange and between 3,700 to 5,200 K, and M stars are red and the coolest stars between 2,400 to 3,700 K. Within each class, stars are further divided based on temperature. Each star gets a number 0 through 9. The hottest stars get “0” and the coolest stars get “9.” So, a star that is B2 is hotter than a star that is B8. F – as in FORNACIS Yellowish Whitish stars Between 6,000 and 7,500 degrees they are! G as in “ Go SUN! Yellow like ME! Between 5,200 and 6,000 degrees - Yipee!
