Max Dupain (1911-1992) created some of the most iconic imagery of the 20th century - images which reflect a nation and its culture, and which resonate with the collective Australian consciousness like few others.
This auction, which features 500 original photographs, including the most complete selection of images from Dupain’s acclaimed Beach Series, presents a rare opportunity to acquire original works direct from the estate of one this country’s most important modern photographers.
For this large scale exhibition, 'Under the Sun: Reimagining Max Dupain’s Sunbaker', ACP has invited 15 artists to create new works in response to the iconic Sunbaker by revered Australian photographer Max Dupain.
The exhibition features new works by Peta Clancy, Christopher Day, Destiny Deacon, Michaela Gleave, Nasim Nasr, Sara Oscar, Julie Rrap, Khaled Sabsabi, Yhonnie Scarce, Christian Thompson, Angela Tiatia, Kawita Vatanajyankur, Daniel Von Sturmer, Justene Williams and William Yang.

Max Dupain's ‘The Sunbaker’ - that summery image of a man resting on the beach - is arguably the most famous photograph in Australia. It’s also the focal point of 'Under the Sun', a new exhibition by the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney that invites 15 artists of diverse backgrounds to offer some modern interpretations of Dupain's most recognised work. Max Dupain
Maxwell Spencer Dupain AC (4 April 1911 – 27 July 1992) was a renowned Australian modernist photographer.
Early life
Dupain received his first camera as a gift in 1924, spurring his interest in photography. He later joined the Photographic Society of NSW, where he was taught by Justin Newlan; after completing his tertiary studies, he worked for Cecil Bostock in Sydney.
Career
Early years
By 1934 Max Dupain had struck out on his own and opened a studio in Bond Street, Sydney. In 1937, while on the south coast of New South Wales, he photographed the head and shoulders of a friend, Harold Salvage, lying on the sand at Culburra Beach. The image, entitled Sunbaker, subsequently became Dupain's most famous piece.
However, it was not until the 1970s that the photograph received wide recognition. It was purchased in 1976 by the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra and has become a national icon.
Later years
During World War II Dupain served with the Royal Australian Air Force in both Darwin and Papua New Guinea helping to create camouflage.

The exhibition features new works by Peta Clancy, Christopher Day, Destiny Deacon, Michaela Gleave, Nasim Nasr, Sara Oscar, Julie Rrap, Khaled Sabsabi, Yhonnie Scarce, Christian Thompson, Angela Tiatia, Kawita Vatanajyankur, Daniel Von Sturmer, Justene Williams and William Yang.

On Saturday 8 April a diverse panel of leading thinkers and practitioners discussed the role of Max Dupain’s Sunbaker as representative of Australian identity, and whether it still reflects contemporary Australian society.

On Saturday 8 April a diverse panel of leading thinkers and practitioners discussed the role of Max Dupain’s Sunbaker as representative of Australian identity, and whether it still reflects contemporary Australian society.
Chaired by Walkley award-winning journalist Helen Vatsikopoulos, panelists Stephen Gilchrist, Prof. Meaghan Morris and William Yang interrogated the role of the image in symbolising and constructing a national identity and how these images re-enforce ideas of dominant culture.

Reflecting Australia’s multicultural, multi-ethnic and multi-faith nature, Under the sun: Reimagining Max Dupain’s Sunbaker, is an audacious exhibition of new works by fifteen Australian artists who interrogate the social and political implications of Dupain’s iconic image and the complexities at play surrounding our collective and national identity.
On Saturday 18 February 2017, a selected exhibiting artists discussed their experience and process for developing their personal responses to the 'Sunbaker' for this landmark photographic and photomedia exhibition.
Joined by Daniel Boetker-Smith, Managing Editor of Australia’s leading photographic journal Photofile and Director of Asia-Pacific Photobook Archive and Australian Centre for Photography’s Curator, Claire Monneraye, artists Nasim Nasr, Julie Rrap and Sara Oscar, shared their unique approach to Max Dupain's iconic Australian work and the themes embedded within it.
