The term watercraft covers a range of different vehicles including ships, boats, hovercraft and submarines, and differs from a flotation device such as a log raft.
A watercraft is a noun that in English can mean a vehicle with the capability for aiding human surface or sub-surface, usually propelled, water movement for various purposes, and the skills required to operate such a vehicle.
Craft refers to the minimum capability for construction, and assisted propulsion beyond basic hand-paddling, and the basic constructed waterborne object such as a log raft.
Water crafting therefore requires several orders of complexity in the design to be successful: flotation, propulsion, navigation for steering, and skilled operation. A pontoon, though essentially a flotation device, can be transformed into a craft by use of poles, erection of a sail (creating a sail-raft), or attachment of an outboard motor, which would convert it into a ferry.
Watercraft is a general term which applies to many different classes and types of water vehicles. The general term that describes their operation used to be seamanship, but with increased participation of women in the maritime industry the gender neutral seafaring is becoming more accepted.
