Most people are familiar with the dangers of radiation. However, there is and has been a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding surrounding its effects. A lot of it stems from radiation's link to nuclear weapons. In fact, even the US government has made some very misleading statements about radiation in the past. For example, after dropping the nuclear bombs on Japan to end World War II, the US claimed that there wouldn't be any fallout radiation or that it wouldn't have any negative effects. Unfortunately, it did. Since then we have learned a lot about radiation and its effects on the human body as you will soon see with these 25 intense facts about radiation.
Because of the misinformation in the past, there are lots of people who subscribe to somewhat pseudoscientific beliefs about radiation. While it is true that it can be harmful. And yes, you should avoid getting x-rayed too much. There is more to the radiation story. For example, only ionizing radiation is dangerous. This is the high intensity radiation like gamma rays and x-rays. We are constantly bombarded by electromagnetic waves that simply pass through us or go around us without any harm. These include radio waves, microwaves, and more. Our entire universe is full of radiation. In fact, your TV even picks up some of the radiation left over form the Big Bang! There is no escaping it. I'm filming a documentary for TV about how Uranium and radioactivity have shaped the modern world. It will be broadcast in mid-2015, details to come. The filming took me to the most radioactive places on Earth (and some places, which surprisingly aren't as radioactive as you'd think). Chernobyl and Fukushima were incredible to see as they present post-apocalyptic landscapes. I also visited nuclear power plants, research reactors, Marie Curie's institute, Einstein's apartment, nuclear medicine areas of hospitals, uranium mines, nuclear bomb sites, and interviewed numerous experts.
Notes about measuring radiation:
Sieverts are a measure of 'effective dose' - that means they measure the biological impact of the energy transferred to tissues from radiation.

DOSES MAY VARY
The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents).
Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only.
The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. References are here:

What is it?
Radiation poisoning, also known as radiation sickness or radiation toxicity (acute radiation syndrome or chronic radiation syndrome), is a collection of damaging health effects caused by exposure to high amounts of ionizing radiation from radioactive material within a short period of time. It causes a painful death to its victims due to gastrointestinal and neurological effects, falling blood counts, and cancer. The majority of radiation poisoning-related deaths occurred during the 1945 bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster in Chernobyl and 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. You can find a documentary on these disasters online.
Where is it located?
Although radiation sickness mostly affects those living close to nuclear power plants, frequent travelers are at risk too when flying due to higher amounts of radiation exposure from solar flares when in the air.
How will it kill you?
Radiation poisoning causes cellular degradation by damaging your DNA, particularly affecting the ability of your cells to divide normally. The amount of radiation absorbed by your body determines how sick you'll be. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, infection, and bleeding. Large doses lead to a rapid death, while low doses from months or years of exposure cause cancer as well as genetic defects in its victims' offspring.
How to survive:
Supportive treatment through blood transfusions and antibiotics are generally the most effective methods of therapy for acute radiation syndrome. Extreme cases may require more aggressive treatments such as bone marrow transfusion. Because there have been no controlled studies of therapeutic intervention for radiation poisoning in humans, most of these recommendations are based solely on animal research.

In physics, radiation is a process in which energetic particles or energetic waves travel through a medium or space. Two types of radiation are commonly differentiated in the way they interact with normal chemical matter: ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. The word radiation is often colloquially used in reference to ionizing radiation (i.e., radiation having sufficient energy to ionize an atom), but the term radiation may correctly also refer to non-ionizing radiation (e.g., radio waves, heat or visible light). The particles or waves radiate (i.e., travel outward in all directions) from a source. This aspect leads to a system of measurements and physical units that are applicable to all types of radiation.
Both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation can be harmful to organisms and can result in changes to the natural environment. In general, however, ionizing radiation is far more harmful to living organisms per unit of energy deposited than non-ionizing radiation, since the ions that are produced by ionizing radiation, even at low radiation powers, have the potential to cause DNA damage. By contrast, most non-ionizing radiation is harmful to organisms only in proportion to the thermal energy deposited, and is conventionally considered harmless at low powers which do not produce significant temperature rise. Ultraviolet radiation in some aspects occupies a middle ground, in having some features of both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Although nearly all of the ultraviolet spectrum of radiation is non-ionizing, at the same time ultraviolet radiation does far more damage to many molecules in biological systems than is accounted for by heating effects (an example is sunburn). These properties derive from ultraviolet's power to alter chemical bonds, even without having quite enough energy to ionize atoms.

The level of radiation varies widely around the world depending mainly on altitude and geology (excluding nuclear accidents).
Estimates of particular doses also vary. All numbers reported in this video should be taken as order of magnitude only.
The most contentious claim may be that smokers receive the highest dose of ionizing radiation. This is not a whole body dose, but a dose to the lungs as specified in the video. References are here:

What is it?
Radiation poisoning, also known as radiation sickness or radiation toxicity (acute radiation syndrome or chronic radiation syndrome), is a collection of damaging health effects caused by exposure to high amounts of ionizing radiation from radioactive material within a short period of time. It causes a painful death to its victims due to gastrointestinal and neurological effects, falling blood counts, and cancer. The majority of radiation poisoning-related deaths occurred during the 1945 bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster in Chernobyl and 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. You can find a documentary on these disasters online.
Where is it located?
Although radiation sickness mostly affects those living close to nuclear power plants, frequent travelers are at risk too when flying due to higher amounts of radiation exposure from solar flares when in the air.
How will it kill you?
Radiation poisoning causes cellular degradation by damaging your DNA, particularly affecting the ability of your cells to divide normally. The amount of radiation absorbed by your body determines how sick you'll be. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, infection, and bleeding. Large doses lead to a rapid death, while low doses from months or years of exposure cause cancer as well as genetic defects in its victims' offspring.
How to survive:
Supportive treatment through blood transfusions and antibiotics are generally the most effective methods of therapy for acute radiation syndrome. Extreme cases may require more aggressive treatments such as bone marrow transfusion. Because there have been no controlled studies of therapeutic intervention for radiation poisoning in humans, most of these recommendations are based solely on animal research.
