Switzerland is a small country full of surprises and wonderful villages. Since decades, Switzerland has been attracting numerous tourists from allover the world. It is the Alps that fascinates most of the visitors but also the very well preserved villages. Although Switzerland is quite small, depending on the region, the villages and towns may look very different. In this video, the 10 most beautiful villages from allover the country will be presented in detail. While there may be a few that you might have heard of, there will be quite some surprises. Gruyères is THE place to experience the medieval vibes in Switzerland. The castle, the museums and furthermore the foodie world of Gruyères are really exciting to experience, do not forget to try fondue, Gruyère cheese and double cream! Zermatt is the most popular village on this list. Visit the many panoramas over the Swiss Alps, see the Matterhorn or simply explore the village of Zermatt itself! Discover the many beautiful traditional wooden houses scattered around this Swiss village! Visit what used to be the smallest municipality of Switzerland: Corippo. Corippo is located in the Valle Verzasca in Ticino. It's a wonderful village full of stone houses and very interesting: ONLY 12 people live in there! Surely, it's not crowded there. Saint-Ursanne is another medieval village; the town that could be in a fairytale. Saint-Ursanne is built along the river doubs and charms with its many medieval houses and wonderful abbey. Guarda - the town of Schellenursli - in the lower Engadin is located in the "Rumantsch" speaking region of Switzerland. It's far away the urban centres and very quiet. Best to visit during Summer or on Chalandamarz! Grimentz is THE stereotypical village of Switzerland. It's located up in the Swiss Alps and charms with its many traditional wooden houses. The houses are all decorated with red flowers; cheesy and alluring! Lauterbrunnen is another touristy favorite. The village is small but it's located in the Valley of 72 Waterfalls! Enjoy the scenery with its many waterfalls and greens! Do not forget to go up to Wengen and the Jungfraujoch! Epesses is located in Switzerland's wine region at lake Geneva! It's a wonderful village in the middle of the vineyards and definitely offers you enough viewpoints over the wine terraces, lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps. Stein am Rhein is also a very medieval and cultural village. The old town is perfectly preserved and charms with its many painted houses. Spectacular is the "No e Wili" play that is held on a 10-25 years base. Enjoy swimming in the river Rhine or dining at the Castle Hohenklingen. MORCOTE is the most beautiful Swiss village on this Top 10 list! It's located at Lake Lugano and charms with its appearance of being built at the hill. Stunning is the church Maria del Sasso, the wonder garden in the Parco Scherrer and furthermore the many viewpoints on the hill. Morcote is by the way considered not very touristy. Thus perfect to rank 1st among the Top 10 Villages of Switzerland! WATCH the ENTIRE VIDEO in 4K!

https://wn.com/Top_10_Villages_Of_Switzerland_–_Most_Beautiful_Swiss_Towns_–_Best_Places_Full_Travel_Guide

Twenty years ago, SWISS embarked on its maiden voyage from Basel to Zurich. Since then, as the airline of Switzerland, it has been our mission to connect Switzerland to the world. Now, two decades later, we are taking a look back at all that we have accomplished, and we want to thank our loyal customers. As a way of giving something back, we have planned exciting birthday activities to last us through the year – and we want our customers to be a part of them.

When the mountain bike circus returns to Gränichen next weekend on 18 and 19 June as part of the "PROFFIX Swiss Bike Cup", a piece of Swiss mountain bike history and at the same time Aargau sports history will be written. The oldest cross-country race in Switzerland will take place for the thirtieth time.
In 1991, mountain biking was still a very young sport in Switzerland. But the new trend sport, which emerged in America, quickly caught fire in this country as well. Hans Hirter was one of the driving forces. He brought biking to Gränichen - or even to the whole canton of Aargau. As part of the "Aargauer Mountainbike Meisterschaft" (Aargau Mountain Bike Championship), which was organised by the then cantonal association SRB Aargau, a mountain bike race was held in Gränichen for the first time.
Family affair for the Stirnemanns
RC Gränichen, which up to that point had mainly been actively involved in organising cross-country cycling events, KM tests and skill trials, was thus involved in the first kicks of mountain biking. Only a year before, the first ever World Championships had taken place, in Durango (USA). The first Swiss championships would not even follow until three years later, in 1994.
One of the people who "slipped into" this scene and RC Gränichen in the mid-nineties is Beat Stirnemann: "It became a bit of a family affair," says the real Mister Bike in Gränichen. In 1994, his brother Paul took over the OC presidency for four years, then Beat himself for two years before becoming U19 national coach. Then he handed over this office to another brother, Peter. From 1999 to 2010, Peter Stirnemann and his team left their mark on the Swiss bike scene. In the meantime, the race in Gränichen had matured from a cantonal to a national and even an international event.
Australian wins at the Swiss Championships
A special milestone was the first Swiss Championships, which took place for the first time in 2000 in the community at the beginning of the Wynental. These championships were special in many ways, as Beat Stirnemann still remembers today: "The Australian Cadel Evans, who later also won the Tour de France, was the winner. At that time, foreigners were still allowed to start at the SM," recalls the coach, who is still extremely committed today. Swiss television was also there and reported almost exclusively on the winner, Cadel Evans. "The media coverage led to a change in the regulations, and since then only Swiss athletes have been allowed to compete in the championships," Stirnemann remembers.
The Swiss Championships have now taken place in Gränichen a total of five times (2000, 2007, 2010, 2019, 2020). While the organising committee was led by Manuel Eichenberger from 2011 to 2020, there was also an upgrade in the international calendar. Since 2012, the race has had the status of "Hors Categorie". This means that only the World Cup races are ranked higher.
Constantly growing demands and challenges
Since last year, Rafael Geiser has taken over the presidency, after it was even in doubt whether a successor for Manuel Eichenberger could be found.
"Someone has to do it," says the new OC president with a laugh and immediately adds that he can rely on an extremely experienced and well-coordinated team.
However, the fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for voluntary associations and organisations to organise such a large event does not stop in Gränichen. The demands have increased massively over the last thirty years. Especially in the last few years, RC Gränichen has had to struggle intensively for permission to hold the event. The big challenges are not in the area of requirements, but also in the area of sponsoring and thus financing, as Geiser says.
700 to 800 participants expected
Around 700 to 800 riders are expected on both race days, from the junior and hobby categories to the professionals. In the men's race, Switzerland's Vital Albin, Gränich's Joel Roth and Andri Frischknecht will challenge New Zealand's Anton Cooper. In the women's race, the high-flyer of the World Cup season so far, Rebecca McConnell (Aus), is the absolute top favourite. From a Swiss perspective, Cup leader Seraina Leugger, Ramona Forchini and U23 rider Noel Burri have the best chances of a podium finish.

On June 17th 2015, SWISS welcomed one of the Bombardier C Series CS100 prototypes to Zurich Airport, which arrived already painted in the SWISS livery and will remain that way, flying with Bombardier. For the entire SWISS family - pilots, flight attendants, office staff and maintenance crew - the event was an emotional and happy one, and we all were excited to take a look at our future member of the SWISS fleet, which will join our operations in summer 2016.

The Swiss Family Robinson - PART 1 of 2 - FULL Audio Book by Johann David Wyss - Classic Fiction
The Swiss Family Robinson - PART 1 of 2 - FULL Audio Book by Johann David Wyss - Classic Fiction
Written by Swiss pastor Johann David Wyss and edited by his son Johann Rudolf Wyss, the novel was intended to teach his four sons about family values, good husbandry, the uses of the natural world and self-reliance. Wyss's attitude toward education is in line with the teachings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and many of the episodes have to do with Christian-oriented moral lessons such as frugality, husbandry, acceptance, cooperation, etc. The adventures are presented as a series of lessons in natural history and the physical sciences, and resemble other, similar educational books for children in this period, such as Charlotte Turner Smith's Rural Walks: in Dialogues intended for the use of Young P...

Battle of Sempach – 1386 – Growth of the Old Swiss Confederacy
The Battle of Sempach was fought on 9 July 1386, between Leopold III, Duke of Austria and the Old Swiss Confederacy. The battle was a decisive Swiss victory in which Duke Leopold and numerous Austrian nobles died. The victory helped turn the loosely allied Swiss Confederation into a more unified nation and is seen as a turning point in the growth of Switzerland.
Background
During 1383-1384, the expansion of the Old Swiss Confederacy collided with Austrian interests. The interests of Austria were further undermined in the Pact of Constance, a union of Zürich, Zug, Solothurn and 51 cities of Swabia. In 1385, there were various attacks, without formal declaration of war or central organization, by forces of Zürich, Zug and Lucern on the Austrian strongholds of Rapperswil, Rothenburg Cham and ...

Its headquarters are at EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg near Basel, Switzerland, and an office at Zurich Airport in Kloten, Switzerland.[7] The company's registered office is in Basel.[8]

The adventures are presented as a series of lessons in natural history and the physical sciences, and resemble other, similar educational books for children in this period, such as Charlotte Turner Smith's Rural Walks: in Dialogues intended for the use of Young Persons (1795), Rambles Further: A continuation of Rural Walks (1796), A Natural History of Birds, intended chiefly for young persons (1807). But the novel differs in that it is modeled on Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, a genuine adventure story, and presents a geographically impossible array of mammals, birds, reptiles, and plants (including the Bamboos, Cassavas, Cinnamon Trees, Coconut Palm Trees, Fir Trees, Flax, Myrica cerifera, Rice, Rubber Plant Potatoes, Sago Palms[disambiguation needed], and an entirely fictitious kind of Sugarcane) that probably could never have existed together on a single island for the children's edification, nourishment, clothing and convenience.
Over the years there have been many versions of the story with episodes added, changed, or deleted. Perhaps the best-known English version is by William H. G. Kingston, first published in 1879. It is based on Isabelle de Montolieu's 1813 French adaptation and 1824 continuation (from chapter 37) Le Robinson suisse, ou, Journal d'un père de famille, naufragé avec ses enfans in which were added further adventures of Fritz, Franz, Ernest, and Jack. Other English editions that claim to include the whole of the Wyss-Montolieu narrative are by W. H. Davenport Adams (1869--1910) and Mrs H. B. Paull (1879). As Carpenter and Prichard write in The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature (Oxford, 1995), "with all the expansions and contractions over the past two centuries (this includes a long history of abridgments, condensations, Christianizing, and Disney products), Wyss's original narrative has long since been obscured." The closest English translation to the original is William Godwin's 1816 translation, reprinted by Penguin Classics.
Although movie and TV adaptations typically name the family "Robinson", it is not a Swiss name; the "Robinson" of the title refers to Robinson Crusoe. The German name translates as the Swiss Robinson, and identifies the novel as belonging to the Robinsonade genre, rather than as a story about a family named Robinson. (summary from wikipedia.org)

Origins of the rose garden
Jules Gravereaux in Roseraie du Val-de-Marne, 1900
Although roses have been selected and grown in China for over 1,000 years,[1] the forerunner of the rose garden as we know it today was planted by empress Joséphine de Beauharnais at Malmaison, France in the years between 1799 and 1814.[2] Joséphine imported both leading gardening talent and scores of roses, financing many plant collecting trips. At her death in 1814, the garden included more than 250 varieties of rose. It is said that her plant hunters also introduced some 200 other plants to France, among them the dahlia.[3]
British designers of rose gardens include Thomas Mawson who created examples at Graythwaite Hall (his first major garden project in 1886) and other sites including Bushey (1913).
One of the oldest still existing public rose gardens is Jules Gravereaux's Roseraie du Val-de-Marne south of Paris in L'Haÿ-les-Roses, which was laid out in 1899 and remains the biggest rose garden in France.

In 1385, there were various attacks, without formal declaration of war or central organization, by forces of Zürich, Zug and Lucern on the Austrian strongholds of Rapperswil, Rothenburg Cham and Wolhusen.
In January 1386, Lucerne expanded its sphere of influence by entering pacts with number of towns and valleys under Austrian control, including Entlebuch, Sempach, Meienberg, Reichensee and Willisau. This move was the immediate cause of war. A local Austrian force defeated the confederate garrison at Meienberg. On 14 January, Lucerne called the confederaces for assistance. An armistice was called on 21 February, and negotiations were held in Zürich. But neither side had any real interest in ending the conflict at this point, and as the armistice ended, the conflict escalated into a full-scale military confrontation.

In the US it's known as 'Swiss cheese'. Emmentaler has iconic holes in it, and it's also the world's largest cheese. We visited the Emmentaler Shaukaeserei in town of Affoltern in Emmental, east of Bern, to see how it's made. Eighty percent of the production of all Emmentaler AOP comes from this region, with 150 producers.

When you think of Swiss cheese, you think of holes. But Gruyère, which has a smooth texture, is the most produced and most consumed cheese within Switzerland. Gruyère cheese is a component of a classic Swiss fondue, along with European dishes like quiche and croque monsieur. The cheese has a long heritage. Records of cheesemaking go back to the 12th century in this region. Today, 30,000 tons of Gruyere are produced here each year.

This Swiss type cheese is known for its delicious nutty flavour and holes.
So what makes the holes? The holes or eyes develop with the addition of a bacteria called Propionic shermanii which feeds on lactose in the milk and creates CO₂, which creates the eyes. The larger the cheese, the bigger the eyes. If you have larger equipment and a big press, I recommend that you double this recipe for a better result.
When made commercially this cheese is made in 60-80 kg (132 -- 176 lbs.) wheels, which aids the uniformity of the eye formation. This recipe will make a 900 gm (2lbs) wheel with much smaller eyes.

This Swiss style cheese has a distinctive mild, sweet and nutty Swiss flavor profile, and its characteristic “eyes” are so fun to create. All you need are a few ingredients, some patience and some time. Worthwhile endeavors are worth the wait, so this one a try. You really CAN make Swiss cheese at home!

We had one full day in Zurich, Switzerland, and I wanted to make the most of it by going on a Swiss food tour, eating as much food as possible, and walking around and seeing some of the most famou sights and attractions in the beautiful city of Zurich.
Here are all the details about everything you’ll find in this video:
Zürich, Switzerland
Café Henrici - To begin the day for Swiss breakfast, we stopped to have a cup of coffee, and also I wanted a croissant, but they were all out of the morning already, so I settled for a few small slices of bread. It was excellent.
Total price for 3 people - 24.40 CHF ($25.75)
Lindenhof Hill - This is a great place to get a view over Old Zurich, and it puts the city into perspective and helps you get your bearings, and the views are beautiful.
Swiss Chuchi - Thank you to Marcel for this recommendation. In Switzerland for a single day, I needed to eat one of the most well known of all Swiss food, cheese fondue. At Swiss Chuchi restaurant, we enjoyed both cheese fondue and raclette, both of which were excellent and the most cheese I’ve had in a single meal in a very long time.
Total price - 126 CHF ($132.98)
That included all I ate, and 2 other plates of food.
Grossmünster - This church is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Zurich. For a small fee, you can pay to climb to the top of the tower for an amazing view.
Price - 4 CHF ($4.22)
Lake Zurich - The city of Zurich is surrounds Lake Zurich, which is unbelievably clean and pure.
Kronenhalle Restaurant - This is one of the most legendary and classic restaurants in all of Zurich, Switzerland. I didn’t realized it was so expensive and so high end, but we decided to go for it anyway, because I was looking forward to trying their Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, the most well known of all Zurich Swiss food dishes consisting of thin sliced potato paired with veal stew. It’s quite a stunning dish and the version at Kronenhalle Restaurant was absolutely stunning.
Total price - 126 CHF ($132.98)
Bahnhofstrasse Shopping street
Rheinfelder Bierhalle - To finish off this ultimate Swiss food tour of Zurich in a single day we went to Rheinfelder Bierhalle, a beer hall and restaurant in Zurich. I ordered their specialty, Jumbo Jumbo Cordon Bleu. Cordon bleu is another one of the Swiss food dishes you don’t want to miss when you’re in Zurich.
Thank you very much for watching this Swiss food tour!

The holes come from a byproduct of some of the microbes added to milk to make Swiss cheese. Specifically, there are three primary types of bacteria that are typically used to make Swiss cheese (these can vary slightly depending on the manufacturer): Streptococcus thermophilus; Lactobacillus helveticus; and Propionibacterium shermanii.

You might not believe it but "Swiss" is actually not one kind of cheese - Switzerland has more than 450 types of cheeses! We chose to feature 10 of them in easy and delicious Swiss Cheese recipes to cook for others - or yourself!
All of our Swiss Cheese recipes are available on our blog www.foodpeopleplaces.com
1. The Raclette: Our personal favorite, is traditionally served in individual portions. Raclette actually comes from the word "racler" meaning "Scrape", because you scrape the melted cheese onto bread, potatoes, ham or anything you want.
Beware of imitations: the Swiss Raclette Cheese is produced ONLY in a small region of Switzerland, Le Valais. French Raclette might be tasty but it is not the original!
2. Beef and Cheese Yakitori Skewers: or when Swizerland and Japan have babies! Yakitori is a Japanese way to cook skewers - traditionally charcoal grilled chicken seasoned with a unique sweet & salty sauce. In this recipe we replaced chicken with thin slices of beef, glazed them with the famous Yakitori sauce, and wrapped them around a piece of Swiss Cheese: L’Etivaz. This hard cheese, similar to Gruyère, is made purely from summer milk, which gives it some exotic fruity notes. The combination is totally irresistible!
3. Vegetarian Carpaccio with Tête de Moine: Tête de moine has one of the richest flavor among all these Swiss cheeses. That’s the reason why we paired it with fresh, sweet and crunchy vegetables. Traditionally this cheese “cut” to form “rosette”, or little roses. Okay, they look more like peonies, but paired with persimmons, radishes, arugula and a hazelnut vinaigrette, creates a flavor you’ll never forgot!
4. Our take on Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich: is with 4 different maturation degrees of Appenzeller Cheese! 3 months, 5 months, 6 months or 9 months, as you like it! Better eat the whole sandwich alone if you want to taste them all. The rest of the ingredients comes from the original: beef, bell pepper, onions and a lot of Worcestersauce.
5. Emmentaler Soufflé : a French classic with a powerful wow effect. Even if Cheese Soufflé is the nightmare of every cook, it actually shouldn’t be. It is no magic, just chemistry. Follow the recipe on our blog, and be ready to plunge in a fluffy cheese cloud.
…
6. Sweet Potato and Cheese Croquette : a Swizzrocker Cheese for a Rock’n’roll recipe! A crusty fried ball hiding a soft sweet potato mash and a heart of elastic cheese. Easy, spicy, gooey and irresistible.
7. The original Swiss Fondue with a Mushroomy twist: who hasn’t tasted a fondue yet right? But have you tried the real one? The original Swiss version is made out of TWO cheeses : le Gruyère, nutty and deliciously salty, and le Vacherin Fribourgeois for creaminess. To add a little more umami, we decided to tuck in some seared mushrooms!
8. Sbrinz Asparagus Risotto: before calling us sinners, what if I told you that Sbrinz may actually be the grand father or Parmigiano Reggiano? It might even be the oldest Cheese in Europe - but nothing is settled. This very very hard cheese can only be carved, not cut. Hint: it is the cheese we used to create the mountains at the beginning of the video.
…
9. Gruyere Crisps: Lace-like. They are beautiful, light, crispy, done in 3 minutes and they can change any of your dish into art. The trick: handle them when they are still warm to give them a special shape, as they will solidify in few seconds. To curve some of them, we simply put them on a rolling pin!
10. Baked Mont d’or… with bacon potatoes, because decadence never stops! Mont d'Or is definitely a cheese that deserves more recognition. Its wood box gives it a light oaky flavor, the cheese is velvety, and breaking its crust is even more satisfying than Crème Brûlée’s. As side dish, we pre-cooked small potatoes, wrapped them in bacon, and put everything in the oven. Gimme more!
DISCLAIMER: we had planned to do a video about melting cheeses to warm you up during winter 2017, when the Switzerland Cheese Marketing contacted us. Their support enabled us to create an even greater video, as we usually finance all our videos by ourselves. They supported the project both materialy by providing the cheeses and some devices, as well as financially but they had no influence on the content nor on the recipes.

Switzerland is home to over 475 varieties of cheese.Cow's milk is used in about 99 percent of the cheese produced. The best known Swiss cheese are a group of hard or semi-hard cheese with a distinct character. Their distinct character arose from the requirements of cheese made in the summer on high Alpine grasslands, and then transported with the cows down to the valleys in the winter. Traditionally the cheese were made in large rounds or "wheels" with a hard rind, to provide longevity to the shelf-life.
Technically Swiss-type cheese is "cooked", meaning made using thermophilic lactic fermentation starters, incubating the curd with a period at a high temperature of 45°C or more. Most varieties have few if any holes, or holes that are much smaller than the large holes found in some Emmental or its imitations. The general eating characteristics of the cheess is a firm but still elastic texture. Flavour is covering a wide range from mild to sharp, acidic or salty, nutty and buttery.
Tilsiter cheese is a pale yellow semihard smear-ripened cheese, created in the mid-19th century by Prussian-Swiss settlers, the Westphal family, from the Emmental valley. The original buildings from the cheese plant still exist in Sovetsk, Russia, formerly Tilsit, in the former German province of East Prussia. Tilsiter has been manufactured in Switzerland since 1893. Tilsiter has a medium-firm texture with irregular holes or cracks. Swiss Tilsiter is also sold under the name "Swissrocker" or "Swizzrocker"
Emmental or Emmentaler is a yellow, medium-hard cheese that originated in the canton of Bern around Emmental area. Emmental was first mentioned in written records in 1293. It has a savory but mild and nutty taste. In some parts of the world, the names "Emmentaler" and "Swiss cheese" are used interchangeably for Emmental-style cheese.
Appenzeller cheese is a hard cow's-milk cheese produced in the Appenzellerland region of northeast Switzerland, in the two modern-day cantons of Appenzell. A herbal brine, sometimes incorporating wine or cider, is applied to the wheels of cheese while they cure, which flavors and preserves the cheese while promoting the formation of a rind. Cheese from Appenzellerland has a documented history of at least 700 years, being first mentioned in a document from 1282 The cheese is straw-colored, with tiny holes and a golden rind. It has a strong smell and a nutty or fruity flavor, which can range from mild to tangy, depending on how long it is aged.
Vacherin is a cow's milk (French vache, "cow") cheese. Vacherin Fribourgeois is produced under Swiss AOC in the canton of Fribourg. It has a slightly acidic, resiny flavor with a varying strength depending on the age and type. It is also a basic component lending character to fondues.
Le Gruyère is a hard yellow Swiss cheese that originated in the cantons of Fribourg, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Jura, and Berne in Switzerland. It is named after the town of Gruyères. In 2001, Gruyère gained the appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOP).
Gruyère is sweet but slightly salty, with a flavor that varies widely with age. It is often described as creamy and nutty when young, becoming more assertive, earthy, and complex as it matures. When fully aged (five months to a year), it tends to have small cracks that impart a slightly grainy texture.
