Kenneth "Ken" Paxton, Jr. (born December 23, 1962) became the Texas Attorney General in January 2015 and was indicted by a Texas grand jury for securities fraud seven months later. Paxton won election to top law enforcement job in November 2014 as a champion of the Tea Party movement.
Since no member of the Democratic Party has won statewide office in Texas in two decades, Paxton beat fellow lawmaker Dan Branch, who was the choice of a majority of the Republican Caucus of the Texas House of Representatives in the all-important Republican primary.
For two years beginning in January 2013, Paxton was a Republican member of the Texas Senate for District 8, which includes the central-western portion of Collin County and parts of such surrounding cities as Allen, Frisco, and McKinney, Texas. For 10 years beginning in 2003 to 2013, Paxton represented District 70 member in the Texas House.
On July 28, 2015, Paxton was indicted by a Texas grand jury on felony charges of securities fraud and failing to properly register with the Texas state securities board.
