The Little Prince

The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince; French pronunciation: ​[lə.pə.tiˈpʁɛ̃s]), first published in 1943, is a novella, the most famous work of the French aristocrat, writer, poet, and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900–1944).

The novella is the fourth most-translated book in the world and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. Translated into more than 250 languages and dialects (as well as Braille), selling nearly two million copies annually with sales totaling over 140 million copies worldwide, it has become one of the best-selling books ever published.

After the outbreak of the Second World War Saint-Exupéry was exiled to North America. In the midst of personal upheavals and failing health, he produced almost half of the writings for which he would be remembered, including a tender tale of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss, in the form of a young prince fallen to Earth. An earlier memoir by the author had recounted his aviation experiences in the Sahara Desert, and he is thought to have drawn on those same experiences in The Little Prince.

The Little Prince (1974 film)

The Little Prince is a 1974 British-American fantasy-musical film with screenplay and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, music by Frederick Loewe. It was both directed and produced by Stanley Donen and based on the 1943 classic children-adult's novella, Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince), by the writer, poet and pioneering aviator Count Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who disappeared near the end of the Second World War some 15 months after his fable was first published.

The film and its music were unsuccessful at the box office but became somewhat popular after its theatrical run, and has been released for sale on various media.

Background

The original Little Prince novella was first published in 1943, and is the most famous work of the French aristocrat, writer, poet and pioneering aviator Count Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900–1944). It is a poetic tale self-illustrated in watercolours in which a pilot stranded in the desert meets a young prince fallen to Earth from a tiny asteroid. The story is philosophical and includes societal criticism, remarking on the strangeness of the adult world.

The Little Prince (EP)

The Little Prince (Hangul: 어린왕자) is the solo debut extended play (EP) by South Korean singer and actor Kim Ryeowook, a member from boy band Super Junior. It was released on January 28, 2016, by Label SJ, S.M. Entertainment and distributed by KT Music. The EP featured six tracks in total, including the lead single, "The Little Prince".

Background

The release of The Little Prince was not only anticipated as Ryeowook's first official solo album since his debut 11 years ago but also because it was the first release under Super Junior's own label "Label SJ", established by SM Entertainment in 2015 during the group's 10th anniversary.

Production and composition

The title track bearing the same name as the album was a ballad inspired by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's novel "The Little Prince". The title track "The Little Prince" was a ballad song and a conversation between a man in pain from love and The Little Prince.

His album consists of songs that are very different in flavor. The lyrics for "POOM" was written by Ryeowook, and depicts the words that a son wants to tell his mother but doesn't know where to begin. "Foxy Girl" is a light mid-tempo dance song, and features rapper DinDin. Ballad song "Like a Star" help to bring out the clear vocals of Ryeowook, with orchestra and piano music. The album also includes a retro song "Hello" and the song "People you may know" which tells of one's feelings after seeing the photos of someone you have just broke up with appear on the SNS recommendations.

The Little Prince (opera)

The Little Prince, subtitled A Magical Opera, is an opera in two acts by Rachel Portman to an English libretto by Nicholas Wright, based on the 1943 book of the same name by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It was first performed in at the Houston Grand Opera on 31 May 2003.

History

The Little Prince was commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera and premiered in May 2003 with Nate Irvin as The Little Prince and Teddy Tahu Rhodes as the Pilot. It was then performed by the Skylight Opera Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the Boston Lyric Opera with Jeffrey Walter as the Little Prince. Houston Grand Opera had a return engagement in December 2004 with Jeffrey Walter as the Little Prince and Jeffrey Allison. It was then performed at the University of Kentucky opera (April 2005), the New York City Opera (November 2005), Tulsa Opera, and the Santa Fe Opera. The San Francisco Opera and Cal Performances did a joint production at Zellerbach Hall in May 2008. Ithaca College Opera also put on a production in February and March 2010.

The Adventures of the Little Prince (TV series)

The Adventures of the Little Prince (星の王子さま プチ・プランス, Hoshi no Ōjisama Puchi Puransu) is an anime series based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Made by the animation studio Knack Productions, the series, originally titled Hoshi no Ōjisama Puchi Puransu (Prince of the Stars: Petit Prince), aired in Japan on the TV Asahi network from July 1978 to March 1979. Dubbed into English, the series premiered in the United States in 1985 on Nickelodeon and was rerun through June 1, 1985 to December 29, 1989. It was also broadcast on TVOntario in 1989, a station that would later pick up the dub of the 2010 French adaptation. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, of Mobile Suit Gundam fame, was involved in this series as a director.

The series showed the extended adventures of the Little Prince, Swifty The Space Bird, and the Rose Girl. In total there were 26 episodes aired in English, with 39 episodes made for the original Japanese run. (According to The Anime Encyclopedia by Jonathan Clements and Helen McCarthy, only the first 35 episodes were actually aired on Japanese TV; the remaining four episodes remained "lost" until the series was reissued on video.)
