John "Skip" Barber III (born November 16, 1936 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American retired racecar driver who is most famous for his Skip Barber Racing Schools.
Barber started racing in 1958 while studying at Harvard University, where he earned a degree in English.
In the mid-1960s, he won three SCCA national championships in a row and finished third in the 1967 United States Road Racing Championship. Later, Barber went on to win consecutive Formula Ford National Championships (1969 and 1970), a record tied only recently.
At the start of the 1971 season he purchased a March 711, which he planned to take back to the United States and race in the U.S. Formula 5000 series. Before he did so, he took part in the Monaco Grand Prix, Dutch Grand Prix, United States Grand Prix, and Canadian Grand Prix in a privately funded March. He returned to the U.S. and Canadian races again in 1972. After that he raced GT cars.
When his racing career ended, Barber's belief that auto racing was "coachable" in the same manner as any other sport—at the time, a distinctly minority position—led him to create the eponymously named racing school, and a year later the equal-car race series.
The Skip Barber Racing School is one of the largest racing schools in the world. It conducts racing schools, defensive and high performance driving schools, amateur and professional racing championships and corporate entertainment schools. Skip Barber started the school in 1975 with two borrowed Formula Ford race cars and four students. The school visits up to 30 race tracks across the United States and Canada and owns 120 race cars. As of 2007 the school is affiliated with Mazda, who provide many vehicles for the school.
Since 1975, Skip Barber Racing School has operated a fully integrated system of racing schools, driving schools, racing championships, corporate events and OEM events across North America, teaching emergency braking, skid and slide control, proper cornering techniques, an understanding of vehicle dynamics, and a variety of other car-control skills.
Since its founding in 1975, Skip Barber Racing School has trained more motorsports winners and champions than any other organization of its kind. Skip Barber alumni race and win in every major event and championship, from NASCAR's Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series to Formula One, the Indy 500, American Le Mans, and the IndyCar Series. Since 1983, the Skip Barber Racing School has trained over one-third of all Indy 500 competitors and one-quarter of the NASCAR Sprint Cup competitors. Skip Barber Racing alumni have won every major U.S. auto racing championship.
Road Atlanta is a 2.54-mile (4.088 km) road course located just north of Braselton, Georgia, USA. The facility is utilized for a wide variety of events, including professional and amateur sports car and motorcycle races, racing and driving schools, corporate programs and testing for motorsports teams. The track has 12 turns, including the famous "esses" between turns three and five; and Turn 12, a downhill, diving turn. The track is owned by NASCAR through its subsidiary Panoz Motorsports, and is the home to the Petit Le Mans, as well as AMA motorcycle racing, and smaller events throughout the year.
In 1969, David Sloyer, Earl Walker, and Arthur Montgomery purchased a 750 acres (300 ha) plot of farmland in Braselton, Georgia, with the intent to build a world-class road racing facility. When a Can-Am race had to be canceled due to flood damage, the series organizers chose Road Atlanta to replace it. The track then began to take form quickly, taking only six months to excavate, grade, and pave the road course.

After starting 15th due to a penalty in the previous race I worked my way up to 2nd position before half distance. I set the track record in qualifying and ran within a couple tenths of that time in the race, setting fastest lap. One month ago, I completed my Skip Barber 3 Day Racing School at Road Atlanta. Now, looking back, I realize that the school was possibly the most enjoyable and exciting experience that I have ever had in my entire life. I would like to thank Skip Barber for helping my dream become reality, and I would like to thank my instructors Cassius Mullen, Franklin Futrelle, and Todd Hanson for giving me very useful insight about racing both on and off of the track. Fox Car Report visits Lime Rock Park, home of the IMSA Northeast Grand Prix, to talk to track owner Skip Barber about high performance driving and the past, present and future of the historic venue
Skip Bayless will make $26 million in the next four years while working at Fox Sports. Which is incredible when you consider that LeBron James killed him less than 24 hours ago. Figuratively, of course, but after recognizing how the soon-to-be-former ESPN First Take-er built the latter (and most profitable) part of his career on anti-LeBron James hot takes, it feels like at least a part of Skip Bayless has died. Which is sad, since it also feels like our idiotic American sports media innocence is lost. We were so happy with LeBron's failures. They kept us safe at night, reassuring us that in our great country even the dumbest of opinions should find mainstream support. LeBron James was a choke artist, gutless Millennial who lacked both respect for the game and a "clutch gene." And if som...
