Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe | Alex Filippenko | Talks at Google
We expected the attractive force of gravity to slow down the rate at which the Universe is expanding. But observations of very distant exploding stars (supernovae) show that the expansion rate is actually speeding up, a remarkable discovery that was honored with the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics to the teams' leaders. Over the largest distances, the Universe seems to be dominated by a repulsive "dark energy" -- an idea Albert Einstein had suggested in 1917 but renounced in 1929 as his "biggest blunder." It stretches space itself faster and faster with time. But the physical origin and nature of dark energy, which makes up about 70% of the contents of the Universe, is probably the most important unsolved problem in all of physics; it may provide clues to a unified quantum theory of gravity.

Spinning glitter Mystery ////Homemade Science with Bruce Yeany
The spinning glitter mystery or as it was formerly called , the spinning glitter paradox ( it's not really a paradox ) is a simple experiment that I show to my middle school science students, and then ask them to try it for themselves. A simple version can be repeated in flat bottomed glass or plastic containers using one color of glitter or sand. Why does the material settle at different places as the water and bottle is rotated or spin two different ways? I have my own ideas but would like to hear from others in the comments section.
Homemade science is a collection of classroom tested ideas, suggestions, projects, and experiments that I have used in teaching physical science for the Annville-Cleona school district in central Pennsylvania. I am currently in my 38th ye...

COLLISIONS! A big part of physics is understanding collisions and how they're not all the same. Mass, momentum, and many other things dictate how collisions can be unique. In this episode of Crash Course Physics, Shini sits down to lead us through an understanding of collisions. Plus, she brings a long our old friend Sir Isaac Newton.

Over the largest distances, the Universe seems to be dominated by a repulsive "dark energy" -- an idea
Albert Einstein had suggested in 1917 but renounced in 1929 as his "biggest blunder." It stretches space itself faster and faster with time. But the physical origin and nature of dark energy, which makes up about 70% of the contents of the Universe, is probably the most important unsolved problem in all of physics; it may provide clues to a unified quantum theory of gravity.
About the Speaker: Alex Filippenko is the Richard & Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor in the Physical Sciences. His accomplishments, documented in about 700 research papers, have been recognized by several major prizes, and he is one of the world's most highly cited astronomers. In 2009 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and he shared part of the Gruber Cosmology Prize in 2007. He has won the top teaching awards at UC Berkeley and has been voted the "Best Professor" on campus a record 9 times. In 2006 he was selected as the Carnegie/CASE National Professor of the Year among doctoral institutions, and in 2010 he won the ASP's Emmons Award for undergraduate teaching. He has produced five astronomy video courses with "The Great Courses," coauthored an award-winning textbook, and appears in numerous TV documentaries including about 40 episodes of "The Universe" series. An avid tennis player, hiker, and skier, he enjoys world travel and is addicted to observing total solar eclipses (11 so far).

I am currently in my 38th year of teaching. My intention is to share these ideas with other teachers or anyone who has an interest in science. I have found that designing and building my own equipment has taught me more than any course that I have ever taken. I hope that you consider trying this for yourself.. I also share and show some of these ideas at workshops, science conferences, or inservice presentations.
Videos are shot with a Casio EXH20. Slow motion video clips are either 3.5 or 7 times slower.

New stellar streams confirm 'melting pot' history of the galaxy
https://phys.org/news/2018-01-stellar-streams-pot-history-galaxy.html
“Eleven new stellar streams, discovered in data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), were reported today in a special session held at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Washington, DC. Prior to the discovery, only two dozen or so stellar streams were known, many of which were discovered in data from a precursor survey, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).”
Dark Energy Survey Finds New Stellar Streams Destroyed by the Milky Way
https://www.seeker.com/astronomy/dark-energy-survey-finds-new-stellar-streams-destroyed-by-the-milky-way
“A project designed to help uncover the nature of dark energy and dark matter in our universe has found that alien stars from other galaxies have been infiltrating the Milky Way. The Dark Energy Survey has found 11 new streams of stars that do not originate from our own galaxy.”
Astronomers Found Two Massive Galaxies Amid an Ocean of Dark Matter
https://www.seeker.com/astronomy/astronomers-found-two-massive-galaxies-amid-an-ocean-of-dark-matter
“Astronomers have found a pair of surprisingly gigantic galaxies from the early universe, and one is the most massive galaxy ever seen from when the universe was young. Observations show the pair of big galaxies existed less than 800 million years after the Big Bang, and their size doesn’t conform to current cosmological models, which say early galaxies were much smaller than today’s galaxies.”

Will the magnetic field of the Earth reverse its direction in the future? Will this cause problems?
http://curious.astro.cornell.edu/question.php?number=523
"The magnetic field of the Earth has actually switched its direction many many times during Earth's history. Although this is not completely understood, the leading theory of how it works is that Earth's magnetic field is caused by the motion of the liquid outer core. The churning of the liquid in the outer core acts as a giant electromagnet, moving electrical charges around, in what is known as the 'geomagnetic dynamo.'"

"The end of the world as we know it could come in any number of ways, depending on who you ask. Some people believe global cataclysm will occur when Earth's magnetic poles reverse. When north goes south, they say, the continents will lurch in one direction or the other, triggering massive earthquakes, rapid climate change and species extinctions."
