President Obama urged police and citizens to work harder to eliminate racial bias in policing, saying, "all of us as Americans should be troubled" by the videotaped police shootings of black men this week.
"When people say black lives matter, that doesn’t mean that blue lives don't matter. All lives matter," Obama told reporters upon arriving in Warsaw Friday morning for a two-day meeting of NATO leaders. "This isn't a matter of us comparing the value of lives. This is about us recognizing the burden that's been placed on a particular group of our citizens."
It was an extraordinary statement about a domestic issue as he touched down on foreign soil, delivered in slow and measured tones. Obama said he felt compelled to address the shootings in a televised statement — in addition to a Facebook post published five hours earlier — given the "extraordinary interest" in the incidents.

President Obama's Facebook update on officer involved shootings:
All Americans should be deeply troubled by the fatal shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. We've seen such tragedies far too many times, and our hearts go out to the families and communities who've suffered such a painful loss.
Although I am constrained in commenting on the particular facts of these cases, I am encouraged that the U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation in Baton Rouge, and I have full confidence in their professionalism and their ability to conduct a thoughtful, thorough, and fair inquiry.
But regardless of the outcome of such investigations, what's clear is that these fatal shootings are not isolated incidents. They are symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve.
To admit we've got a serious problem in no way contradicts our respect and appreciation for the vast majority of police officers who put their lives on the line to protect us every single day. It is to say that, as a nation, we can and must do better to institute the best practices that reduce the appearance or reality of racial bias in law enforcement.
That's why, two years ago, I set up a Task Force on 21st Century Policing that convened police officers, community leaders, and activists. Together, they came up with detailed recommendations on how to improve community policing. So even as officials continue to look into this week's tragic shootings, we also need communities to address the underlying fissures that lead to these incidents, and to implement those ideas that can make a difference. That's how we'll keep our communities safe. And that's how we can start restoring confidence that all people in this great nation are equal before the law.
In the meantime, all Americans should recognize the anger, frustration, and grief that so many Americans are feeling -- feelings that are being expressed in peaceful protests and vigils. Michelle and I share those feelings. Rather than fall into a predictable pattern of division and political posturing, let's reflect on what we can do better. Let's come together as a nation, and keep faith with one another, in order to ensure a future where all of our children know that their lives matter.

“All of us as Americans should be troubled by these shootings because these are not isolated incidents,” President Obama said.
President Obama spoke about the shooting deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two black men who were shot and killed by police. He said their deaths were a sign of the pervasive racial disparities in our country.
“Last year, African-Americans were shot by police at more than twice the rate of whites,” Obama said.
Obama emphasized that wanting to fix the criminal justice system and supporting police don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
“When people say black lives matter, that doesn’t mean blue lives don’t matter, it just means that all lives matter. ... This isn’t a matter of us comparing the value of lives, this is recognizing there’s a particular burden being placed on a group of our fellow citizens and we should care about that.”

He vowed that those involved in the attack would be brought to justice and expressed his support for law enforcement. Obama is in Poland for meetings with European leaders.

He then defeated Republican nominee John McCain in the general election, and was inaugurated as president on January 20, 2009. Nine months after his inauguration, Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

President Obama urged police and citizens to work harder to eliminate racial bias in policing, saying, "all of us as Americans should be troubled" by the videotaped police shootings of black men this week.
"When people say black lives matter, that doesn’t mean that blue lives don't matter. All lives matter," Obama told reporters upon arriving in Warsaw Friday morning for a two-day meeting of NATO leaders. "This isn't a matter of us comparing the value of lives. This is about us recognizing the burden that's been placed on a particular group of our citizens."
It was an extraordinary statement about a domestic issue as he touched down on foreign soil, delivered in slow and measured tones. Obama said he felt compelled to address the shootings in a televised statement — in addition to a Facebook post published five hours earlier — given the "extraordinary interest" in the incidents.

All Americans should be deeply troubled by the fatal shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. We've seen such tragedies far too many times, and our hearts go out to the families and communities who've suffered such a painful loss.
Although I am constrained in commenting on the particular facts of these cases, I am encouraged that the U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation in Baton Rouge, and I have full confidence in their professionalism and their ability to conduct a thoughtful, thorough, and fair inquiry.
But regardless of the outcome of such investigations, what's clear is that these fatal shootings are not isolated incidents. They are symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve.
To admit we've got a serious problem in no way contradicts our respect and appreciation for the vast majority of police officers who put their lives on the line to protect us every single day. It is to say that, as a nation, we can and must do better to institute the best practices that reduce the appearance or reality of racial bias in law enforcement.
That's why, two years ago, I set up a Task Force on 21st Century Policing that convened police officers, community leaders, and activists. Together, they came up with detailed recommendations on how to improve community policing. So even as officials continue to look into this week's tragic shootings, we also need communities to address the underlying fissures that lead to these incidents, and to implement those ideas that can make a difference. That's how we'll keep our communities safe. And that's how we can start restoring confidence that all people in this great nation are equal before the law.
In the meantime, all Americans should recognize the anger, frustration, and grief that so many Americans are feeling -- feelings that are being expressed in peaceful protests and vigils. Michelle and I share those feelings. Rather than fall into a predictable pattern of division and political posturing, let's reflect on what we can do better. Let's come together as a nation, and keep faith with one another, in order to ensure a future where all of our children know that their lives matter.

U.S. President Barack Obama ended the Three Amigos news conference by addressing the Trump in the room.
Just after he wound up his answer to the last question of the day, Obama launched into a "rant" against the kind of controversial rhetoric associated with Donald Trump's Republican primary campaign.
"If you'll allow me, I want to say one last thing because it has been a running thread in a bunch questions … this whole issue of populism," Obama said.
The president then suggested someone take a minute to look up the meaning of the term populism — to represent the interests of the common people — that is often used to describe Trump's campaign style.
Obama said he got into politics to help people, to make sure the poor had the same chances to succeed as the wealthy, that working moms had trustworthy child care, that the tax system was fair and that children were getting a "decent education."
"Now, I suppose that makes me a populist," Obama said.
"Somebody else who has never shown any regard for workers, has never fought on behalf of social justice issues or making sure that poor kids are getting a decent shot in life, or have health care — in fact, have worked against economic opportunity for workers and ordinary people — they don't suddenly become a populist because they say something controversial in order to win votes. That's not the measure of populism, that's nativism, or xenophobia, or worse. Or, it's just cynicism."
Obama said throughout the news conference that while the global economic system had left some people behind, and though some of the anti-trade talk in the U.K. and in the U.S. was based on legitimate concerns, finding solutions takes time and hard work.
"Let's be clear, somebody who labels, us versus them, or engages in rhetoric about how we're going to look after ourselves and take it to the other guy, that's not the definition of populism," Obama said.
After making his point, Obama cut the silence by saying, "Sorry, this is one of the prerogatives of when you're at the end of your term … you go on these occasional rants."

Obama said these same "currents" influenced the United Kingdom's vote to leave the European Union: "But while the circumstances of Brexit may be unique to the United Kingdom, the frustrations people felt are not. The short-term fallout of Brexit can be sensibly managed, but the long-term trends of inequality, dislocation, and the resulting social division, those can't be ignored. "How we respond to the forces of globalization and technological change will determine the durability of an international order that ensures security and prosperity for future generations." Obama advised against restricting trade and giving in to protectionism.
