In exclusive, never heard before recordings believed to be of former Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, BBC News Arabic reveals the anxious telephone calls that helped seal the fate of his 23-year dictatorship and spark a wave of revolutions across the Middle East.
The recordings, which are strongly disputed by some, appear to show that, as protests rocked his feared police state, the president's closest aides urged him to stay away from the country.
'The Dictator's Last Calls' uses animation to recreate the last hours of President Ben Ali's rule as he made a dramatic flight to Saudi Arabia to take his family to safety while demonstrators overran the streets.
There has been speculation over the events that led President Ben Ali to flee Tunisia and these calls shed light on how his rule finally ended.
The BBC has had the recordings forensically analysed by audio experts who found no evidence of tampering or manipulation.
We have also played these recordings to people who know the individuals concerned. They believe the voices to be genuine, further supporting the authenticity of the recordings.

Tunisia is a very beautiful country, there are a lot of places to go and sights to see. I loved Sidi Bou Said and El Jem most! If you are a Star Wars fan, you might go to Tatooine.
I noted some things I did not like about Tunisia. If you go there, you should always count the change. Some (not all) Tunisian men are disrespectful, so my another piece of advice is not to travel there alone if you are a young woman (you should always have a self-defense weapon on you). Stay safe!
Peace to all good Tunisian people (men and women), I didn't mean to offend you, this is what I witnessed while travelling around your country.

I am back in TUNISIA for the second time, but this time just for 24 hours as I regroup before heading tomorrow to LIBYA!
The last time I came here (4 years ago) I was a broke, lonely, budget backpacker and I had a mediocre time at best.
But this time around is a different story! I had this idea to find a random Tunisian stranger from Instagram and spontaneously meet up with him/her to have the BEST DAY we could possibly have.
Let's just say that I think I succeeded, but I'll let you be the judge :)

Tunisia is a North African country bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert. In the capital, Tunis, the Bardo Museum has archaeological exhibits from Roman mosaics to Islamic art. The city’s medina quarter encompasses the massive Al-Zaytuna Mosque and a thriving souk. To the east, the site of ancient Carthage features the Antonine Baths and other ruins, plus artifacts at the Carthage National Museum. Today, in this video, we'll know about Tunisia. Tunisia (Arabic: تونس 
Tūnis; Berber: ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ), officially the Tunisian Republic or the Republic of Tunisia (Arabic: الجمهورية التونسية al-Jumhūrīya at-Tūnisīya; Berber: ⵜⴰⴳⴷⵓⴷⴰ ⵏ ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ) is the northernmost country in Africa, covering 165,000 square kilometres (64,000 sq mi). Its northernmost point, Ras ben Sakka, is the northernmost point on the African continent. It is bordered by Algeria to the west, Libya to the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north and east. As of 2013, its population is estimated at just under 10.8 million. Its name is derived from its capital city, Tunis, which is located on the country's northeast coast.
Geographically, Tunisia contains the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains and the northern reaches of the Sahara desert. Much of the rest of the country's land is fertile soil. Its 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) of coastline includes the African conjunction of the western and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Basin and, by means of the Sicilian Strait and Sardinian Channel, features the African mainland's second and third nearest points to Europe after Gibraltar.

Tunisian wine has a long history dating back to the Antiquity like most Mediterranean countries with the Phoenicians and Carthage .
The agronomist Mago that lived in the city of Carthage, wrote a treaty about agronomy and viticulture, from which its techniques are still used until this day. Despite the arrival of a Muslim power since the 7th century AD, viticulture and wine production never quite disappeared from Tunisia.
Rosé wine accounts for a large proportion of the Tunisian production.

In exclusive, never heard before recordings believed to be of former Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, BBC News Arabic reveals the anxious telephone calls that helped seal the fate of his 23-year dictatorship and spark a wave of revolutions across the Middle East.
The recordings, which are strongly disputed by some, appear to show that, as protests rocked his feared police state, the president's closest aides urged him to stay away from the country.
'The Dictator's Last Calls' uses animation to recreate the last hours of President Ben Ali's rule as he made a dramatic flight to Saudi Arabia to take his family to safety while demonstrators overran the streets.
There has been speculation over the events that led President Ben Ali to flee Tunisia and these calls shed light on how his rule finally ended.
The BBC has had the recordings forensically analysed by audio experts who found no evidence of tampering or manipulation.
We have also played these recordings to people who know the individuals concerned. They believe the voices to be genuine, further supporting the authenticity of the recordings.

I noted some things I did not like about Tunisia. If you go there, you should always count the change. Some (not all) Tunisian men are disrespectful, so my another piece of advice is not to travel there alone if you are a young woman (you should always have a self-defense weapon on you). Stay safe!

Although Tunisia has been making wine for thousands of years, the quality revolution only really started in the 19th and 20th centuries during the French occupation when modern winemaking techniques were introduced.
Tunisia’s warm, sunny climate means that grapes have no trouble ripening which gives the red wines lots of colour, fruity aromas and higher sugar levels which means they can be rather generous in alcohol.
The red wines can pack such a punch that rumour has it the French used to blend Tunisian Syrah into their own. What is for certain though, is that Tunisia's Syrah, Carignan and Touriga Nacional perform particularly well making voluptous, aromatic wines, that pair nicely with flavourful Tunisian dishes like roasted lamb and couscous. On the lighter spectrum, over 65% of Tunisia's wine production is rosé which range from fuller bodied wines to light and delicate. They also make a small amount of aromatic white wines which benefit from being in regions closer to the ocean breeze. Despite its long history, Tunisia's wine industry still feels in its infancy which much potential as of yet unexplored. This is because during centuries of Arabic rule Tunisia went almost completely dry.

Tunisian cuisine or the cuisine of Tunisia, is a blend of Mediterranean and desert dwellers' culinary traditions. Its distinctive spicy fieriness comes from the many civilizations which have ruled the land now known as Tunisia: Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Spanish, Turkish, Italians (Sicilians), French, and the native Punics-Berber people. Many of the cooking styles and utensils began to take shape when the ancient tribes were nomads. Nomadic people were limited in their cooking implements by what pots and pans they could carry with them. The Tunisian tagine, is very different from the Algerian or Moroccan dish. It is a type of a pie dish, made out of eggs, meat and vegetables, similar to the Italian frittata or the eggah.

In exclusive, never heard before recordings believed to be of former Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, BBC News Arabic reveals the anxious telephone calls that helped seal the fate of his 23-year dictatorship and spark a wave of revolutions across the Middle East.
The recordings, which are strongly disputed by some, appear to show that, as protests rocked his feared police state, the president's closest aides urged him to stay away from the country.
'The Dictator's Last Calls' uses animation to recreate the last hours of President Ben Ali's rule as he made a dramatic flight to Saudi Arabia to take his family to safety while demonstrators overran the streets.
There has been speculation over the events that led President Ben Ali to flee Tunisia and these calls shed light on how his rule finally ended.
The BBC has had the recordings forensically analysed by audio experts who found no evidence of tampering or manipulation.
We have also played these recordings to people who know the individuals concerned. They believe the voices to be genuine, further supporting the authenticity of the recordings.

Tunisia is a very beautiful country, there are a lot of places to go and sights to see. I loved Sidi Bou Said and El Jem most! If you are a Star Wars fan, you might go to Tatooine.
I noted some things I did not like about Tunisia. If you go there, you should always count the change. Some (not all) Tunisian men are disrespectful, so my another piece of advice is not to travel there alone if you are a young woman (you should always have a self-defense weapon on you). Stay safe!
Peace to all good Tunisian people (men and women), I didn't mean to offend you, this is what I witnessed while travelling around your country.

I am back in TUNISIA for the second time, but this time just for 24 hours as I regroup before heading tomorrow to LIBYA!
The last time I came here (4 years ago) I was a broke, lonely, budget backpacker and I had a mediocre time at best.

Tunisia is a North African country bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert. In the capital, Tunis, the Bardo Museum has archaeological exhibits from Roman mosaics to Islamic art. The city’s medina quarter encompasses the massive Al-Zaytuna Mosque and a thriving souk. Tunisia (Arabic: تونس Tūnis; Berber: ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ), officially the Tunisian Republic or the Republic of Tunisia (Arabic: الجمهورية التونسية al-Jumhūrīya at-Tūnisīya; Berber: ⵜⴰⴳⴷⵓⴷⴰ ⵏ ⵜⵓⵏⴻⵙ) is the northernmost country in Africa, covering 165,000 square kilometres (64,000 sq mi). Its northernmost point, Ras ben Sakka, is the northernmost point on the African continent. Geographically, Tunisia contains the eastern end of the Atlas Mountains and the northern reaches of the Sahara desert. Much of the rest of the country's land is fertile soil. Its 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) of coastline includes the African conjunction of the western and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Basin and, by means of the Sicilian Strait and Sardinian Channel, features the African mainland's second and third nearest points to Europe after Gibraltar.

Although Tunisia has been making wine for thousands of years, the quality revolution only really started in the 19th and 20th centuries during the French occupation when modern winemaking techniques were introduced.
Tunisia’s warm, sunny climate means that grapes have no trouble ripening which gives the red wines lots of colour, fruity aromas and higher sugar levels which means they can be rather generous in alcohol.
The red wines can pack such a punch that rumour has it the French used to blend Tunisian Syrah into their own. What is for certain though, is that Tunisia's Syrah, Carignan and Touriga Nacional perform particularly well making voluptous, aromatic wines, that pair nicely with flavourful Tunisian dishes like roasted lamb and couscous. On the lighter spectrum, over 65% of Tunisia's wine production is rosé which range from fuller bodied wines to light and delicate. They also make a small amount of aromatic white wines which benefit from being in regions closer to the ocean breeze. Despite its long history, Tunisia's wine industry still feels in its infancy which much potential as of yet unexplored. This is because during centuries of Arabic rule Tunisia went almost completely dry.

Early in the morning, locals rush to purchase their favorite bottle of ''legmi'' in Gabès, South of Tunisia.
The delicate drink is made from natural palm tree. Ridha Omrane Moussa owns 25 palm trees and produces 8,000 liters of the drink in a year.
"In the summer of the month, it is fragile because of the heat. The temperature is very high. It is fragile so it can not sit in the heat because it rots and turns into vinegar,'' Moussa said.

Tunisian cuisine or the cuisine of Tunisia, is a blend of Mediterranean and desert dwellers' culinary traditions. Its distinctive spicy fieriness comes from the many civilizations which have ruled the land now known as Tunisia: Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Spanish, Turkish, Italians (Sicilians), French, and the native Punics-Berber people. Many of the cooking styles and utensils began to take shape when the ancient tribes were nomads. Nomadic people were limited in their cooking implements by what pots and pans they could carry with them. The Tunisian tagine, is very different from the Algerian or Moroccan dish. It is a type of a pie dish, made out of eggs, meat and vegetables, similar to the Italian frittata or the eggah.
