The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), commonly referred to as Metro, is a tri-jurisdictional government agency that operates transit service in the Washington Metropolitan Area. WMATA was created by the United States Congress as an interstate compact between the District of Columbia, the State of Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
WMATA provides rapid transit service under the Metrorail name, fixed-route bus service under the Metrobus brand, and paratransit service under the MetroAccess brand. The authority is also part of a public-private partnership that operates the DC Circulator bus system. WMATA has its own police force, the Metro Transit Police Department.
The authority's Board of Directors consists of two voting representatives each from the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and the federal government. Each jurisdiction also appoints two alternate representatives. WMATA has no independent taxation authority and depends on its member jurisdictions for capital investments and operating subsidies.

Today Metro announced a plan to test potential future station concepts at Bethesda Station. As part of its strategic plan, Momentum, the model station will enable Metro to test several design concepts in a single station, with improved lighting, better information and improved customer convenience. As an underground station with a center platform design, Bethesda represents the hardest type of station to illuminate, making it an ideal location for the "model station" pilot. You are viewing a compilation of WMATA Metrorail's Next Generation Railcars, the Kawasaki 7000-Series, that were in service on the Red and Silver Lines. These cars have already replaced some of the Rohr 1000-series cars, and they are slated to replace the Breda 4000-series cars by the end of 2017 at the most, and the 5000-series by 2021. The filming locations on the Red Line all take place at Metro Center at different filming perspectives. For the Silver Line part of this video, the stations filmed are in this order: 1. East Falls Church 2. Ballston-MU 3. Spring Hill (exclusive to Phase 1 of the Silver Line) 4. Wiehle-Reston East (exclusive to Phase 1 of the Silver Line, Where it also goes out of service and becomes a "No Passenger" train) Also, the fact of seeing a 7000-Series train ...
The original version of the door announcements recorded for Metro by Randi Miller was significantly more forceful than the version that was eventually rolled out to the remainder of the fleet in May 2006. The original version was deployed only to a select number of CAF cars on a test basis two months ahead of the main deployment. However, those CAF cars with the original version of the announcement were not replaced. This movie was taken on CAF 5101, shown here running as an Orange Line train at Farragut West.
Last day for the Yellow Line Rush+ and probably the last week for the 4k Series cars no more Railcars left. Sad to see the 1k Series and 4k Series go. The 7k Series are taking over mostly on the Red, Green and Orange. Some Yellow Line Trains were going from Huntington to Greenbelt last night but I heard it's common. I rode the final yellow line rush+ train which was a full 3k series but rest in peace Yellow Line Rush+. Crazy guy gets upset when he saw a passenger smiling or laughing. The two white guys sitting on the bench were talking to each other and minding their own business. Then the crazy guy with the bike turns his attention towards the black guy. Keep your eye on the other passengers, especially the guy in the Redskins jersey. A tutorial for HU17 about navigating around DC using public transportation resources.
Take it from a veteran D.C. reporter: Metrorail is the way to get into and out of the District on the Fourth of July. But there are some tips you should know that will make your trip easier. And, if you're seeing the fireworks (and riding home on Metro), don't miss the last two tips on my list -- they are crucial. Here goes: 1. Make sure everyone in your party has a SmarTrip fare card. There is a one dollar per ride surcharge for anyone using the old paper farecards. (I call it the "tourist tax.") SmartTrip cards are now for sale in vending machines at all Metro stations. It's a ten dollar transaction; the machine will issue you a farecard with $8. of value on it. You can purchase a new SmarTrip card with cash or with a credit card. 2. Make sure there's enough money on your existing far...

Washington Metro Transit Security Guide simulation video
A Easter trip to washington DC, April 2010. Metrorail, commonly called Metro, is the rapid transit system in Washington, D.C., United States, and its surrounding suburbs. It is administered by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), which also operates Metrobus service under the Metro name. In Maryland, Metro provides service to Montgomery County and Prince George's County; in Virginia, to Fairfax County, Arlington County, and the City of Alexandria. Since opening in 1976, the network has grown to include five lines, 86 stations, and 106.3 miles (171.1 km) of track. Metro is the second-busiest rapid transit system in the United States in number of passenger trips, after the New York City Subway. There were 215.3 million trips, or 727,684 trips per weekday, on Metrora...

No Printers Today! The weather is perfect for a train ride to Union Station in downtown Washington DC with NATHAN uncle JEREMY and Grandma Jeannine and Grandpa Joe! What a great time we had!
Orange line passengers get off at 6:52 a.m. at the Federal Center SW Metro Station on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, in Washington, D.C. Trains were running in rush hour mode, and each car was stuffed to capacity. Getting off the train took at least five minutes, and riders were slowly herded to the escalators, which the Metro shut down. Metro workers and police officers used bullhorns to guide riders from the train and out to the streets. Metro officials eventually gave up trying to get ticket fares and just opened up the exit gates for the day. The Metro provided 1,120,000 rail trips, and a systemwide total of 1,544,721 on Inauguration Day 2009, according to a Metro press release. Victor Gonzales / Daily News
