Phil Collins Kissing Hand of Admirer, Meeting People at Dallas Historical Society Event
videos
British singer and drummer
Phil Collins traces his fascination with the
Alamo to the "
Davy Crockett"
TV series that starred
Fess Parker at
Dallas Historical Society.
Phil spoke about his book about the Alamo.
Shot with an iPhone for Dallas Historical Society by Bob Kaplitz.
Never mind that he's performed before crowds 1,
000 times bigger, sold hundreds of millions of records, won
Grammys and an
Academy Award.
British singer and drummer Phil Collins is fidgeting because he's about to give the world a first glimpse inside his own private Alamo.
It's a rarefied and improbable realm, filled with hundreds of
Texas Revolution artifacts and documents painstakingly archived inside a basement room in
Collins' home outside
Geneva, Switzerland.
Rock stars are known for burning cash on
Ferraris, yachts or trophy girlfriends. Collins? He always has remembered the Alamo.
"It keeps
me off the streets. What am I going to do? I don't want to traipse around the world anymore," he said. "I love it. I sit downstairs in my basement and looking at and sort of drooling over what
I've got. It was never my intention to have this huge collection, but one thing led to another and it's my private thing."
Among his treasures are one of Davy Crockett's rifles and his postdeath receipt from the
Texian Army. They share space with
Jim Bowie's knives, verbose
William Barret Travis' letters,
Santa Anna items and a snuffbox
Sam Houston gave to a romantic interest.
"
The Alamo and
Beyond: A
Collector's
Journey" (
State House Press, $
120) is a 400-page, full-color coffee table book displaying the musician's incredible private collection of Alamo documents and artifacts.
Collins said his interest in the Alamo began, as it did for many boys growing up in the
1950s, with the
Walt Disney TV series "Davy Crockett,
King of the Wild Frontier." Collins, who lived in a
London suburb, said he had two great boyhood passions — playing drums and playing at being Davy Crockett.
The drums would carry him to dazzling success as a musician, with eight Grammys and numerous other honors, and the interest in the Alamo would carry him to
San Antonio, where his passion turned into something of an obsession.
He began collecting Alamo memorabilia in
1994 and has filled the basement of his
Swiss estate with hundreds of rare items related to the Alamo and the Texas Revolution. He also became an owner of The
History Shop across from the Alamo.
