Brussels (French: Bruxelles, [bʁysɛl]; Dutch: Brussel, [ˈbrʏsəl]), officially the Brussels-Capital Region (French: Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, Dutch: Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest), is a region of Belgium comprising 19 municipalities, including the City of Brussels which is the capital of Belgium, the French Community of Belgium, and the Flemish Community. The region has a population of 1.2 million and a metropolitan area with a population of over 1.8 million, the largest in Belgium.
Since the end of the Second World War, Brussels has been a major centre for international politics and has become the polyglot home of numerous international organisations, politicians, diplomats and civil servants. Brussels is the de facto capital (or one of three capitals including Luxembourg and Strasbourg) of the European Union as it hosts a number of principal EU institutions. The secretariat of the Benelux and the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are also located in Brussels.
Nigel Paul Farage (/ˈfærɑːʒ/; born 3 April 1964) is a British politician and former commodity broker. He is the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), having held the position since November 2010, and previously from September 2006 to November 2009. Since 1999 he has been a Member of the European Parliament for South East England. He co-chairs the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (formerly "Europe of Freedom and Democracy") group. He has been noted for his sometimes controversial speeches in the European Parliament and has strongly criticised the euro.
Farage was a founding member of UKIP, having left the Conservative Party in 1992 after the signing of the Maastricht Treaty. After unsuccessfully campaigning in European and Westminster parliamentary elections for UKIP since 1994, he was elected MEP for South East England in the 1999 European Parliament Election. He was subsequently re-elected in 2004, 2009 and, most recently, at the 2014 European Parliament Election.

On Tuesday, Brussels became the second capital city in Western Europe in less than four months to experience a deadly bomb attack. Like the Paris attacks, the story attracted wall-to-wall coverage. But also like Paris, the reporting raised the question: Why does the media focus so heavily on this story when equally deadly attacks occur in Ankara, Bamako and Baghdad? In the second wave of media coverage came the political spin - the news anchors, pundits and politicians who have used the attacks in Brussels to advance their own agendas. Discussion quickly turned to the perceived threat of the refugees - despite the two suicide bombers being Belgian nationals - and in the US it even revived the debate around torture. To talk us through the coverage of the Brussels attacks and the politic...

Given the bombing in Belgium, the right wing is on the warpath. More. Donald Trump led the charge of stupid. Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. "Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump is seizing upon the attacks in Brussels to again call for the Mexican border to be closed, Muslims to be banned from entering the country, andterrorism suspects to be waterboarded. Asked during a Tuesday morning Fox and Friends appearance about how he’d respond to the attacks as president, Trump said he’d “close up our borders… until we figure out what’s going on.” “We have to be smart in the United States,” Trump added. “We’re taking in people without real documentation. The leaders of Europe's member states are meeting in Brussels for the first time since last week's shock vote by the UK to leave the EU. The 27 leaders will be looking for clarification from the UK Prime Minister on what will happen next. EU officials have made it plain they would like David Cameron to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - by which a member state can begin the process to leave the EU. Last week, Brussels became the second capital city in Western Europe in less than four months to experience a deadly bomb attack. Like the Paris attacks, it was one of those mega-stories that provoked coverage that went well beyond the event itself. It led to televised talking heads having long discussions on state security and what limits should apply; delving into the issue of immigration and the perceived threat of Syrian refugees. One news channel in the US even used the Brussels attacks to revive the debate around torture. As the New York Times put it: "It did not take long. Almost as soon as the bombs went off in Brussels" ... came …"the bitter debate about the influx of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa." Even though the two suicide bombers were neither refugees nor i...

Brussels, being the center of the European Union, is not only the capital of Belgium, but of whole Europe. The mediaval city core and square determine the atmosphere of the whole city. The Grand Palace is surrounded by magnificent baroque buildings, which were once centers of famous guilds. The building of the City Hall is remerkably beautiful. Not far away stands the Menneken Pils, one of the symbols of Brussels. In the elegant passages and on the streets one can find such Belgian rarities as lace, pralines, and beer. The most notable sights in the city are the Parliament and the City Hall, but we must not forget the Museums showing us the works of the authors of the Low Countries. Near the triumphal arch stands the famous Atomium, which was the symbol of the 1958 World Fair. We can take ...

NOTE: This video was originally posted, under the title "You're Always Waiting Until the Last Minute," on April 21, 2016, but was recently blocked world wide due to what I consider an entirely illegitimate copyright claim. Italian broadcast company RTI lodged a copyright infringement complaint based on 18 seconds of footage (7:18 - 7:36) showing the CCTV video of the three supposed terrorists walking through the Brussels Airport. Yes, the very same video transmitted endlessly by virtually every news outlet on the planet. If use of this footage in this manner does not constitute FAIR USE, then I don't know what does. In my original post, I included a version of the video I pulled from a Guardian story. I have replaced it with one I found in a Mirror article (http://www.mirror.co.uk/new...

Islamophobic messages in the UK tripled in the wake of the Brussels terror attacks and spiked again post-Brexit, according to a British think-tank which has been mapping instances of online hate speech. Demos, the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media, has been researching Islamophobia on Twitter in the aftermath of the bombings in the Belgian capital. The think-tank then furthered its research to look at the impact the EU referendum result had on xenophobia and racism on Twitter. Heat maps visually illustrating the spikes in relevant activity have been posted online by research director at the organisation, Carl Miller.

As the EU referendum debate approaches its climax, Jeremy Paxman takes viewers on a journey to the heart of Europe, meeting the movers, shakers and anonymous faces who run the EU. His central question is simple - has the UK given the power to rule it to Europe, and if so, does it matter? Meeting crucial figures like Michael Gove and Nick Clegg, he hears arguments on both sides, whilst also trying to understand just how the incredibly complex organisation operates. On his journey he struggles through the Parlamentarium (an EU museum that tries to explain the place), tries on a replica of Margaret Thatcher's famous EU jumper and samples the EU-regulated wares of the Portobello Road.

http://www.euractiv.com The dispute between former Health Commissioner John Dalli and Commission President José Manuel Barroso turned personal yesterday as each bandied legal threats at the other. Dalli quit during a meeting with Barroso last week (16 October) after the EU's anti-fraud office, OLAF, linked him to Maltese entrepreneur Silvio Zammit. Zammit is alleged to have asked snuff giant Swedish Match for €60 million in return for persuading Dalli to change the EU's tobacco directive. Dalli told a televised press conference in Brussels yesterday (24 October) that he would challenge the decision by Barroso to ask him to offer his resignation and also the findings of OLAF. Dalli said he had no option to resign, since Barroso could otherwise have sacked him. "The door was open, and I...
