This old standard is pretty much known to everyone and has often been a party favorite for all occasions. In clubs this was the little number that would turn a rowdy crowd into a cheering and whistling crowd, with always a few (sometimes more than a few) would-be strip teasers getting up on tables and the bar to dance. I used to play it on oldies nights of course, but would spring it on the crowd when they least expected it during rock and dance sets.
My 45 vinyl single, the one I used back in the day (late 70's/early 80's), says it was a hit in 1962. So, I was somewhat surprised to come across late 1950's dates on the Internet for the release of this smash party hit, which I, of course, knew first hand was wrong. It turns out both are right: "The Stripper" was composed by David Rose and recorded by The Joe Loss Orchestra in 1958, but for some reason was shelved and forgotten. Forgotten, that is, to most but not all. In 1962, David Rose was releasing "Ebb Tide" as a single, but MGM Records needed something for the B-side. As Rose was away and not available for suggestions, an office boy uncovered the 1958 recording of "The Stripper" and it was released initially as a B-side. Why the song was credited to "David Rose & His Orchestra" and not, say, to "David Rose & The Joe Loss Orchestra" is an enigma I have no answer for. The song peaked at #1 on Billboard on July 7, 1962 and was ranked as the #5 greatest hit of the entire year. It peaked at #1 at Cash Box for two weeks: from June 30, 1962 through July 13, to be followed by Bobby Vinton at #1 on July 14, 1962 with "Roses Are Red (My Love)."
Syncing this was not as easy as it might appear. Striptease songs are to be found in all genres of music and at varying speeds, in the past and today. I needed a dancer whose moves most matched this song in real time. I found only ONE whose dance routine worked, and unfortunately, after finding several different files she appears in, her name is never credited. A bit ironic given that her dance is a natural match for this classic striptease hit to end all striptease hits. "The Stripper," oddly, is a little sad, as it is as much a celebration about the glory of youth and being at one's peak, and the inevitable loss of that state of glory that comes after not too many years.

La carrera musical de David Rose dentro del mundo de la música de cine empezó en 1944, cuando el músico londinense tenía 34 años. Plot: Model citizen David Rose runs a garden center and is a devoted house-father. Like his wife Ivy, who suffered two stillbirths, their new neighbor Melinda is near to giving birth. Just after David showed her around in the Rose home, Melinda goes missing. Although no corpse is found, just circumstantial evidence more likely to be planted then stupidly left behind, police detective Blanchard treats David as his sole suspect, soon arrested, even after nosy neighbor Bindel is knocked down while David is in jail. School buddy Theo does his best to counsel the couple, yet Ivy doubts her husband's innocence just because of indications he may have had an affair with Melinda since high-school, and starts snooping with her best friend Jody. The worst crime is still being hatched.

In clubs this was the little number that would turn a rowdy crowd into a cheering and whistling crowd, with always a few (sometimes more than a few) would-be strip teasers getting up on tables and the bar to dance. I used to play it on oldies nights of course, but would spring it on the crowd when they least expected it during rock and dance sets. My 45 vinyl single, the one I used back in the day (late 70's/early 80's), says it was a hit in 1962. I used to play it on oldies nights of course, but would spring it on the crowd when they least expected it during rock and dance sets.
My 45 vinyl single, the one I used back in the day (late 70's/early 80's), says it was a hit in 1962. So, I was somewhat surprised to come across late 1950's dates on the Internet for the release of this smash party hit, which I, of course, knew first hand was wrong. It turns out both are right: "The Stripper" was composed by David Rose and recorded by The Joe Loss Orchestra in 1958, but for some reason was shelved and forgotten. Forgotten, that is, to most but not all. In 1962, David Rose was releasing "Ebb Tide" as a single, but MGM Records needed something for the B-side. As Rose was away and not available for suggestions, an office boy uncovered the 1958 recording of "The Stripper" and it was released initially as a B-side. Why the song was credited to "David Rose & His Orchestra" and not, say, to "David Rose & The Joe Loss Orchestra" is an enigma I have no answer for. The song peaked at #1 on Billboard on July 7, 1962 and was ranked as the #5 greatest hit of the entire year. It peaked at #1 at Cash Box for two weeks: from June 30, 1962 through July 13, to be followed by Bobby Vinton at #1 on July 14, 1962 with "Roses Are Red (My Love)."
Syncing this was not as easy as it might appear. Striptease songs are to be found in all genres of music and at varying speeds, in the past and today. I needed a dancer whose moves most matched this song in real time. I found only ONE whose dance routine worked, and unfortunately, after finding several different files she appears in, her name is never credited. A bit ironic given that her dance is a natural match for this classic striptease hit to end all striptease hits. "The Stripper," oddly, is a little sad, as it is as much a celebration about the glory of youth and being at one's peak, and the inevitable loss of that state of glory that comes after not too many years.

David Rose ( el 15 de junio, 1910 - 23 de agosto, el 1990) fué un compositor nacionalizado americano pero nacido en el Reino Unido. David Rose nació en el Londres de padres judíos y criado en Illinois .
La carrera musical de David Rose dentro del mundo de la música de cine empezó en 1944, cuando el músico londinense tenía 34 años. Desde entonces los proyectos que llegaban a sus manos eran, por lo general, de escasa repercusión artística y comercial. En 1952 comienza su andadura en la televisión (The blue ribbon Christmas Eve musical), medio para el que realizará la mayor parte de sus obras, destacando su colaboración con el actor y productor Michael Landon en las series La casa de la pradera (Little house on the prairie), El padre Murphy (Father Murphy) y Autopista hacia el cielo (Highway to heaven). Dr. David Rose is a developmental neuropsychologist and educator whose primary focus is on the development of new technologies for learning. In 1984, Dr. Rose co-founded CAST, a not-for-profit research and development organization whose mission is to improve education, for all learners, through innovative uses of modern multimedia technology and contemporary research in the cognitive neurosciences. That work has grown into the field called Universal Design for Learning which now influences educational policy and practice throughout the United States and internationally. In the policy arena, he was one of the authors of the recent National Educational Technology Plan, has testified before the U.S. Senate, and helped to lead the development of the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard. Dr. Rose is the Principal Investigator on a number of U.S. Department of Education and National Science Foundation grants, and is currently the principal investigator of two national centers created to develop and implement the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS). With the increasing prominence of UDL as a field within education, Dr. Rose has become a frequent keynote speaker at national and international conferences.
He is also the co-author or editor with Anne Meyer of the books Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age: Universal Design for Learning (ASCD, 2002); Learning to Read in the Computer Age (Brookline, 1998); A Practical Reader in Universal Design for Learning (Harvard Education Press, 2006), and (with Anne Meyer and Chuck Hitchcock) The Universally Designed Classroom: Accessible Curriculum and Digital Technologies (Harvard Education Press, 2005). In addition he is the author of numerous journal articles and academic book chapters.
Dr. Rose also leads or participates in many of CAST's technology and media development projects that have resulted in programs that are both award-winning and commercially successful including: Literary Place (Scholastic); Wiggleworks® (Scholastic); Thinking Reader (Tom Snyder/Scholastic); CAST's Bobby (now distributed by IBM); AMP Reading System (Pearson).
Dr. Rose has worked as a consultant for Houghton-Mifflin, Scholastic, Tom Snyder Productions, EBSCO Publishing, Pearson, Sopris West, and other publishers. He has also testified before the U.S. Senate's Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health & Human Services, and Education, and regularly advises state departments of education on policies related to the education of students with disabilities and designing universally designed educational systems.
Dr. Rose was recently honored at the White House as a "Champion of Change" for leading education efforts in STEM for students with disabilities.
