The African Union (AU) is a continental union consisting of 54 countries in Africa. The only African state that is not a member is Morocco, due to the status of the Western Sahara, although Burkina Faso and the Central African Republic have had their memberships suspended due to the recent coup d'état and ongoing civil war, respectively. The AU was established on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa and launched on 9 July 2002 in South Africa, with the aim of replacing the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The most important decisions of the AU are made by the Assembly of the African Union, a semi-annual meeting of the heads of state and government of its member states. The AU's secretariat, the African Union Commission, is based in Addis Ababa.

Foreign minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane has urged regional counterparts to pick her nation's candidate.Home Affairs Minister Ms Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma tried to unseat the incumbent Jean Ping in January but the vote ended in stalemate. BBC Newsday presenter Lerato Mbele asked the foreign minister why South Africa was persisting with the bid. Newsday will launch on BBC World Service Radio on 23rd July in the week that London prepares to open the Olympic Games.

The African Union plans to send observers to help Gabon's Constitutional Court with a legal complaint lodged by opposition leader Jean Ping. Ping accuses incumbent President Ali Bongo of cheating to secure victory in last month's elections. There was a rocky start to the Fees Commission initiated by President Jacob Zuma in Tshwane last week. Several student formations started criticising the relevance of the Commission barely a few days after it commenced. For its part the South African Union of Students says free quality education is non-debatable, while the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania boycotted the gathering, dismissing it as 'toothless' and a waste of time. The Higher Education Department says there has been no pronouncement on university fees for 2017. The Caribbean state of Haiti will officially become a member of the African Union come the next AU Summit which will take place next month in Malawi. In 2012, Haiti indicated its interest to move from its observer status to member status. It will be the first time any nation with no geographic connection to the continent of Africa to join the AU.
