In what turned out to be a tragic incident instead of a religious celebration, at least 12 people are feared drowned.
The incident took place today afternoon around 2 after 25 devotees went into river for Ganesha Visarjan, an idol immersion practice during Ganesha Chaturthi, in Tungabhadra river in Shimoga district.
Police officials have recovered one body so far. The search operation is underway to rescue the missing persons.

Shimoga district
Shivamogga district is a district in the Karnataka state of India. A major part of Shimoga district lies in the Malnad region of the Western Ghats. Shivamogga city is its administrative centre. Jog Falls is a major tourist attraction. As of 2011 Shimoga district has a population of 1,755,512. There are seven taluks: Bhadravathi, Hosanagar, Sagar, Shimoga, Shikaripur, Sorab, Thirthahalli.
Also there is a Proposal of creating Sagar District out of Shimoga District for betterment of Administration and development of Sagara Division.This includes Sagar, Hosanagar, Shikaripur, and Sorab talukas.
Origin of name
Shivamogga was previously known as Mandli. There are legends about how the name Shivamogga has evolved. According to one, the name Shivamogga is related to the Hindu God Shiva. Shiva-Mukha (Face of Shiva), Shivana-Moogu (Nose of Shiva) or Shivana-Mogge (Flowers to be offered to Shiva) can be the origins of the name "Shivamogga". Another legend indicates that the name Shimoga is derived from the word Sihi-Moge which means sweet pot. According to this legend, Shimoga once had the ashram of the sage Durvasa. He used to boil sweet herbs in an earthen pot. Some cowherds, found this pot and after tasting the sweet beverage named this place Sihi-Moge.

Jog Falls - Crazy View from Extreme Edge of Falls (Mungaru Male Spot)
I had a this great opportunity to view the Jog Falls from the ultimate edge of the Falls, it was a crazy experience. We had visited the Jog Falls in the summer when the water flow was less and security guys were sleeping :) So managed to lay down on by chest and crept to the edge of Jog Falls and took these crazy video of the Water dropping down 800 Ft. Unfortunately this is all I could record before guards started to chase us to safety. I had a this great opportunity to view the Jog Falls from the ultimate edge of the Falls, it was a crazy experience.
We had visited the Jog Falls in the summer when the water flow was less and security guys were sleeping :) So managed to lay down on by chest and crept to the edge of Jog Falls and took these crazy video of the Water dropping down 800 Ft.
Unfortunately this is all I could record before guards started to chase us to safety.
ABOUT JOG FALLS: Jog Falls is locally known as Joga Jalapata created by Sharavathi River, This is the second highest water falls in India. It is located in Shimoga District, Karnataka State and is a must visit Tourist place in Karnataka.

Monsoons are one of the best times to go out on holidays. One of the best monsoon holiday destination is jog falls, recorded to be the second highest waterfall in India, falling from height of 253metres, located in Shimoga District of Karnataka state.
The falls originate from the Sharavathi River and consist of four distinct segments naming Raja, Named because of its density of water
Rover: This stream falls on a mass of rocks making a huge noise
Rocket: Large amount of water passing thru a narrow opening at high speed, hence called rocket and
Rani (Queen): The stream has a winding, twisting trajectory, said to resemble the movements of a female dancer
The thundering sound of water & lush green surroundings enhanced the beauty.
The steps cut into rocks leads vaporous spray that bounces off these rocks & tickles the face. During monsoon visitors may be the witness of rainbow & the dusky watery background thrumming loud. There are some vantage points from where you can feel the magnificence of jog falls.
One of the most popular ones is the Watkins platform. For trek lovers getting down to base of the falls and then climbing back can be a task of thrill, fun and adventure. The very popular tourist places in jog falls are Linganamakki Dam and Dabbe Falls.
You can reach to jog falls by bus. The nearest town is Sagara in the Shimoga district of Karnataka. There are plenty of buses between Sagara and Jog Falls and you can also take a bus from Karwar or Hanovar.

Twelve people are feared drowned after a coracle carrying more than 20 people capsized in Tungabadra river on Wednesday afternoon in Hadonahalli, Shivamogga district. Rescue personnel have recovered one body from the Tungabhadra river, after the coracle capsized when during the immersion of the Ganesha idol on Wednesday. One body has been retrieved from the river while search and rescue operations are underway to find others. The incident happened around 1.30 pm in the afternoon.

The principal temple situated here is Kedareshwara Temple which is an excellent example of a trikuta "triple towers" temple in a transitional Western Chalukya-Hoysala architecture. It is the oldest example of such a combinational style in Karnataka according to reports from the Mysore archaeological department. Balligavi was in its golden age during 10th -12th century AD when Spiritual and Educational achiements were at their zenith.

A 17-year-old boy from Settisara village in Sagar taluk, Karnataka, has single-handedly dug a 55-feet-deep open well to reduce the hardship of his mother, who had to travel to the public well to fetch water every day after returning home from work.
Every household with decent income in the locality have their own well dug in the backyard, but due to poverty, Pavan Kumar’s family could not afford one.
Pavan saw his mother, who works at a printing unit in Sagar, fetching water every day from local well that was half a kilometre away. Seeing her hardship, Pawan decided to help her by finding a permanent solution to her woes. Thus he dug the well at the backyard of his house.
After seeking advice from a local hydrology expert, Pavan started digging the well in February 26 and in April 20 he finished digging it all by himself in just 45 days. He took a break in between for giving his pre-university exam. The family could not afford any labourers to do this work.
Pawan is very happy for his achievement now, as his mother does not have to go elsewhere to bring water.
