I have ridden Amtrak's long distance trains several times, and I have previously put together two videos on what to expect when traveling in 'sleeper' class (first class) on the western route "Superliner" trains. Recently I took a similar trip across Canada on ViaRail's famous transcontinental train called the "Canadian", from Toronto to Vancouver. This video shows what to expect in a sleeper car on this trip, as well as presenting the trip and its sights. My trip took place in the four days immediately following Labor Day in May of 2014. The westbound train starts at 10 PM in Toronto, then continues over the next three full days and part of the morning on the fourth day, so the trip includes five consecutive dates, and occupies about 3-1/2 days (going by hours of travel).
I forgot to mention in the video that the rooms (except for the berths) all have en-suite toilets. In the roomettes, the toilets are covered by the bed when it is lowered.

For a Summer vacation I had quite the opportunity to do a once-of-a-lifetime trip. That would be riding VIA Rail's train 1 "The Canadian" the whole route from Toronto, Ontario to Vancouver, BC. A total of 4 nights and 5 days on one of the last great streamliners in the world. Our train (which left Toronto the evening of 7/12/13) had two locomotives leading a total of 19 cars.
After leaving the city lights of Toronto, it's not long before day 2 rolls around. Most of day 2 is though the heavy forests of Northern Ontario. The "big" station stop of the day is the tiny town of Hornpayne. The town itself couldn't have had more than 300 people, yet they did have a wifi connection that was available from the train as we were stopped there.
The following morning we find ourselves fast approaching Winnipeg, MB. Which is touted as the big half-way point on the Journey. This is also the point where the entire crew with the exception of the crew chief is changed. That includes the sleeping car attendants and dining staffs. Normally a 4 hour station stop, but due to being late we didn't have as much time as originally planned. However I did get to visit the Winnipeg Railway Museum before getting back on the train and continuing west.
Day 4 probably consisted of the most action caught on camera. First we had arrived into Edmonton, Alberta. This is the spot were the VIA Rail Panorama sightseeing car would be put on for the run through the Rockies. Unfortunately most of the trip though the mountains was plagued by gloomy skies and more than occasional rain shower. Beyond Jasper we continued down though the mountains towards Kamloops. During this time I got a sampling of the on-board entertainment. First, during dinner, the train's crew chief Fabian (who'd been aboard since Toronto) serenaded the Dining Car for it's last dinner of the trip. The small segment in this video is his playing of the Oasis song Wonderwall. Also, up-and-coming musician Megan Twist played a few "gigs" during the journey. Featured here is a piece of her playing Old Crow Medicine Show's version of Wagon Wheel.
Day 5 bought us the sights and sounds of Vancouver, and bought to a bittersweet end of an unbelievable trip. The train has brought together new friendships and unforgettable memories. No matter what happens, I will never forget my first experience riding VIA number 1.

I have ridden Amtrak's long distance trains several times, and I have previously put together two videos on what to expect when traveling in 'sleeper' class (first class) on the western route "Superliner" trains. Recently I took a similar trip across Canada on ViaRail's famous transcontinental train called the "Canadian", from Toronto to Vancouver. This video shows what to expect in a sleeper car on this trip, as well as presenting the trip and its sights. My trip took place in the four days immediately following Labor Day in May of 2014. The westbound train starts at 10 PM in Toronto, then continues over the next three full days and part of the morning on the fourth day, so the trip includes five consecutive dates, and occupies about 3-1/2 days (going by hours of travel). I forgot to mention in the video that the rooms (except for the berths) all have en-suite toilets. In the roomettes, the toilets are covered by the bed when it is lowered. -

For a Summer vacation I had quite the opportunity to do a once-of-a-lifetime trip. That would be riding VIA Rail's train 1 "The Canadian" the whole route from Toronto, Ontario to Vancouver, BC. A total of 4 nights and 5 days on one of the last great streamliners in the world. Our train (which left Toronto the evening of 7/12/13) had two locomotives leading a total of 19 cars.
After leaving the city lights of Toronto, it's not long before day 2 rolls around. Most of day 2 is though the heavy forests of Northern Ontario. The "big" station stop of the day is the tiny town of Hornpayne. The town itself couldn't have had more than 300 people, yet they did have a wifi connection that was available from the train as we were stopped there.
The following morning we find ourselves fast approaching Winnipeg, MB. Which is touted as the big half-way point on the Journey. This is also the point where the entire crew with the exception of the crew chief is changed. That includes the sleeping car attendants and dining staffs. Normally a 4 hour station stop, but due to being late we didn't have as much time as originally planned. However I did get to visit the Winnipeg Railway Museum before getting back on the train and continuing west.
Day 4 probably consisted of the most action caught on camera. First we had arrived into Edmonton, Alberta. This is the spot were the VIA Rail Panorama sightseeing car would be put on for the run through the Rockies. Unfortunately most of the trip though the mountains was plagued by gloomy skies and more than occasional rain shower. Beyond Jasper we continued down though the mountains towards Kamloops. During this time I got a sampling of the on-board entertainment. First, during dinner, the train's crew chief Fabian (who'd been aboard since Toronto) serenaded the Dining Car for it's last dinner of the trip. The small segment in this video is his playing of the Oasis song Wonderwall. Also, up-and-coming musician Megan Twist played a few "gigs" during the journey. Featured here is a piece of her playing Old Crow Medicine Show's version of Wagon Wheel.
Day 5 bought us the sights and sounds of Vancouver, and bought to a bittersweet end of an unbelievable trip. The train has brought together new friendships and unforgettable memories. No matter what happens, I will never forget my first experience riding VIA number 1.

Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg at the Canadian Grand Prix. The world champion, who won his first race of 2016 in Monaco two weeks ago, beat the German by just 0.062 seconds. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was third, just 0.116secs off pole, as Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo displaced team-mate Max Verstappen for fourth by 0.248secs. Alonso made Q3 for the third race in succession by bumping Sergio Perez out of the top 10 in the closing moments of Q2, so the second Force India ended up 11th fastest. The second McLaren-Honda of Jenson Button was fractionally quicker than Alonso in the first two sectors of his final lap in Q2, but he dropped time in the final sector and wound up 12th - blaming a lack of a tow on the run from the hairpin.
Daniil Kvyat's Toro Rosso was just 0.020s slower in 13th, ahead of Haas pairing Esteban Gutierrez and Romain Grosjean, who were separated by 0.232s. The second Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz Jr ended up slowest in Q2 after he clouted the wall of champions at the end of his first proper flying lap, causing the session to be red flagged while marshals craned away his broken car.
Jolyon Palmer had earlier come within 0.015s of stealing the final Q2 spot from Grosjean, but had to settle for 17th place in his Renault. He was 0.140s ahead of the impressive Pascal Wehrlein, whose Manor was 15th fastest after his first run in Q1, but slipped back when others improved.
Wehrlein's hopes of improving himself were scuppered by team-mate Rio Haryanto clouting the wall at the exit of the first chicane, which effectively curtailed the closing minutes of Q1.
Wehrlein at least remained ahead of both Saubers, with Marcus Ericsson over a second clear of team-mate Felipe Nasr, who had to rely on a slow first run in Q1 thanks to the timing of Haryanto's crash. The second Renault of Kevin Magnussen failed to participate in qualifying following his heavy crash in final practice, so he will start last on the grid with the stewards' permission.

Alonso made Q3 for the third race in succession by bumping Sergio Perez out of the top 10 in the closing moments of Q2, so the second Force India ended up 11th fastest. The second McLaren-Honda of Jenson Button was fractionally quicker than Alonso in the first two sectors of his final lap in Q2, but he dropped time in the final sector and wound up 12th - blaming a lack of a tow on the run from the hairpin.
Daniil Kvyat's Toro Rosso was just 0.020s slower in 13th, ahead of Haas pairing Esteban Gutierrez and Romain Grosjean, who were separated by 0.232s. The second Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz Jr ended up slowest in Q2 after he clouted the wall of champions at the end of his first proper flying lap, causing the session to be red flagged while marshals craned away his broken car.
Jolyon Palmer had earlier come within 0.015s of stealing the final Q2 spot from Grosjean, but had to settle for 17th place in his Renault. He was 0.140s ahead of the impressive Pascal Wehrlein, whose Manor was 15th fastest after his first run in Q1, but slipped back when others improved.
Wehrlein's hopes of improving himself were scuppered by team-mate Rio Haryanto clouting the wall at the exit of the first chicane, which effectively curtailed the closing minutes of Q1.
Wehrlein at least remained ahead of both Saubers, with Marcus Ericsson over a second clear of team-mate Felipe Nasr, who had to rely on a slow first run in Q1 thanks to the timing of Haryanto's crash. The second Renault of Kevin Magnussen failed to participate in qualifying following his heavy crash in final practice, so he will start last on the grid with the stewards' permission.

The world champion, who won his first race of 2016 in Monaco two weeks ago, beat the German by just 0.062 seconds.
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was third, just 0.116secs off pole, as Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo displaced team-mate Max Verstappen for fourth by 0.248secs.
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen took sixth from Williams' Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa.
Sunday's race - set to be attended by more than 100,000 people - is live on the BBC Sport website and Radio 5 live Sports Extra.

The Canadian was launch by Canadian Pacific in 1955 as a true first class journey clear across Canada. The train featured brand new stainless steel railcars based on the California Zephyr. The cars are still first rate, including classic Budd diners and dome cars. In 1978 Via Rail took of the service and in 1990 rerouted the train from Canadian Pacific Rails to the more northerly Canadian National route.
