Chrystia Freeland PC MP (born Christina Alexandra Freeland; February 8, 1968) is a Canadian writer, journalist, and politician. Freeland is currently the federal Minister of International Trade. She has served in various editorial positions with the Financial Times, The Globe and Mail and Thomson Reuters, where she was the managing director and editor for consumer news before she announced her resignation to run for the Liberal Party nomination in the by-election to replace Bob Rae as the Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre. She won the Liberal nomination on September 15, 2013, and was elected to parliament in the November 25, 2013, by-election defeating Linda McQuaig of the New Democratic Party, and acted as the Liberal Party of Canada's trade critic. With the federal electoral redistribution for the 2015 federal election Freeland chose to seek election in newly created University—Rosedale electoral district rather than seek re-election in the adjusted Toronto Centre electoral district. She was elected to this seat, October 19, 2015. She was appointed to the Cabinet of Canada as Minister of International Trade on November 4, 2015. In November 2015 she was named one of Toronto's 50 most influential by Toronto Life magazine.
William "Bill" Maher (/ˈmɑːr/; born January 20, 1956) is an American comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, media critic, and television host. As a television host, he is well known for the HBO political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher (2003–present). Maher previously hosted a similar late-night show called Politically Incorrect, originally on Comedy Central and later on ABC.
Maher is known for his sarcastic attitude, political satire and sociopolitical commentary. He targets many topics including religion, politics, bureaucracies, political correctness, and the mass media.
Maher supports the legalization of cannabis and same-sex marriage. His critical views of religion were the basis for the 2008 documentary film Religulous. He is a supporter of animal rights, having served on the board of PETA since 1997, and is an advisory board member of Project Reason. In 2005, Maher ranked at number 38 on Comedy Central's 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all time. He received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star on September 14, 2010.
Real Time with Bill Maher is a talk show that airs weekly on HBO, hosted by comedian and political satirist Bill Maher.
Much like his previous series Politically Incorrect on ABC (and before that, on Comedy Central), Real Time features a panel of guests who discuss current events in politics and the media. Unlike the previous show, guests are usually more well-versed in the subject matter: more experts such as journalists, professors and politicians participate in the panel, and fewer actors and celebrities are included. Additionally, many guests appear via satellite. Also, Politically Incorrect was produced four days a week and was pre-recorded, while Real Time only produces one episode a week which is broadcast live.
Real Time is an hour-long program with a studio audience, airing live on Friday nights at 10:00 PM (ET). It originates from Studio 33 ("The Bob Barker Studio") at CBS Television City in Los Angeles. Prior to 2009, approximately 12 new weekly episodes aired from February to early May, followed by another such set of new episodes from late August to November. In 2009, the show began airing as one continuous season. Because of the live, current-events nature of the show, HBO does not re-air old episodes between breaks, though occasionally a repeat will be shown when the program takes a week off during the season. In late August 2012 the talk show peaked at 1.4 million viewers on Friday, marking the biggest audience for the show in almost eight years.
HBO (Home Box Office) is an American premium cable and satellite television network that is owned by Home Box Office Inc., the cable flagship division of Time Warner. HBO's programming consists primarily of theatrically released motion pictures and original television series, along with made-for-cable movies and documentaries, boxing matches and occasional stand-up comedy and concert specials.
It is the oldest and longest continuously operating pay television service (basic or premium) in the United States, having been in operation since November 8, 1972. In 2014, HBO had an adjusted operating income of US$1.79 billion, compared to the US$1.68 billion it accrued in 2013.
As of July 2015, HBO's programming is available to approximately 36,483,000 households with at least one television set (31.3% of all cable, satellite and telco customers) in the United States (36,013,000 subscribers or 30.9% of all households with pay television service receive at least HBO's primary channel), making it the second largest premium channel in the United States (Encore's programming reaches 40.54 million pay television households as of July 2015). In addition to its U.S. subscriber base, HBO broadcasts in at least 151 countries, covering approximately 122 million subscribers worldwide.
International trade is the exchange of capital, goods, and services across international borders or territories, which could involve the activities of the government and individual. In most countries, such trade represents a significant share of gross domestic product (GDP). While international trade has been present throughout much of history (see Uttarapatha, Silk Road, Amber Road, salt road), its economic, social, and political importance has been on the rise in recent centuries. It is the presupposition of international trade that a sufficient level of geopolitical peace and stability are prevailing in order to allow for the peaceful exchange of trade and commerce to take place between nations.
Trading globally gives consumers and countries the opportunity to be exposed to new markets and products. Almost every kind of product can be found on the international market: food, clothes, spare parts, oil, jewelry, wine, stocks, currencies and water. Services are also traded: tourism, banking, consulting and transportation. A product that is sold to the global market is an export, and a product that is bought from the global market is an import. Imports and exports are accounted for in a country's current account in the balance of payments.

Technology is advancing in leaps and bounds — and so is economic inequality, says writer Chrystia Freeland. In an impassioned talk, she charts the rise of a new class of plutocrats (those who are extremely powerful because they are extremely wealthy), and suggests that globalization and new technology are actually fueling, rather than closing, the global income gap. Freeland lays out three problems with plutocracy ... and one glimmer of hope. There has always been some gap between rich and poor in this country, but in the last few decades, what it means to be rich has changed dramatically. Alarmingly, the greatest income gap is not between the 1 percent and the 99 percent, but within the wealthiest 1 percent of our nation—as the merely wealthy are left behind by the rapidly expanding fortunes of the new global super-rich. Chrystia Freeland, an acclaimed business journalist who has spent nearly two decades reporting on the new trans-global elite, cracks open the tight-knit world of the new global super rich and proves that it is the wealthiest 0.1 percent who are outpacing the rest of us at breakneck speed.

Author and journalist Chrystia Freeland tells Steve Paikin about her new book "Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else", and what it means to the growing income divide.
The One Percent is not only increasing their share of wealth — they're using it to spread millions among political candidates who serve their interests. Example: Goldman Sachs, which gave more money than any other major American corporation to Barack Obama in 2008, is switching alliances this year; their employees have given $900,000 both to Mitt Romney's campaign and to the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future. Why? Because, says the Wall Street Journal, the Goldman Sachs gang felt betrayed by President Obama's modest attempts at financial reform. To discuss how the super-rich have willfully confused their self-interest with America's interest, Bill is joined by Rolling Stone magazine's Matt Taibbi, who regularly shines his spotlight on scandals involving big business and government, ...

http://92yamericanconversation.org | In the final part of our three part interview, Thomson Reuters Digital Editor Chrystia Freeland spoke with us about the super rich and their feeling of persecution. Freeland gives examples of wealthy individuals feeling victimized, including a Wall Street hedge fund manager who sent an email to friends with the subject line "battered wives," comparing their treatment by President Obama to that of battered wives. Another person Freeland spoke to said "the rich today in America have become an oppressed minority similar to oppressed ethnic minorities." Do you think the super rich in America have been persecuted by government? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Ihttp://92yamericanconversation.org | In the second part of our three part interview, Thomson Reuters Digital Editor Chrystia Freeland spoke with us about the 2012 election and Mitt Romney's 47% comments. Freeland looks at the election as a "referendum on income inequality and on how capitalism is working today in America." In comparing Governor Romney and President Obama's message, Freeland was surprised at how strongly President Obama pushed a populist agenda, one that she saw as "quite radical," and the fact that a majority of Americans bought it. On Mitt Romney's 47% comments, Freeland explained that the plutocrats notion of "I did it myself, I built it myself," is a dominant belief. Freeland thinks this notion inevitably produces a clash between plutocracy and democracy. Do you thin...
