Dr. Sandra Portko is a Professor of Psychology at Grand Valley State University. Dr. Portko will present a lecture on archetypes as introduced by the Swiss psychologist Carl. G. Jung. This concept emerged in his development of analytical psychology and contemporary approaches to psychological theory and practice. He used archetypes as a reference to inborn energy patterns that humans have possessed since the beginning of the human race. These "energy patterns" are not full-blown behaviors that are inherited, but rather potential responses that can be thought of as being similar to energy fields. These potential responses can be "activated" by coming in contact with certain situations. Thus, although the energy patterns are potentially accessible to every human, not every human will display all of the potential patterns.

An archetype (
/ˈɑrkɪtaɪp/) is a universally understood symbol, term, or pattern of behavior, a prototype upon which others are copied, patterned, or emulated. Archetypes are often used in myths and storytelling across different cultures.
In psychology, an archetype is a model of a person, personality, or behavior.
In philosophy, archetypes have, since Plato, referred to ideal forms of the perceived or sensible objects or types.
In the analysis of personality, the term archetype is often broadly used to refer to:
Archetype refers to a generic version of a personality. In this sense, "mother figure" may be considered an archetype, and may be identified in various characters with otherwise distinct (non-generic) personalities.
Archetypes are likewise supposed to have been present in folklore and literature for thousands of years, including prehistoric artwork. The use of archetypes to illuminate personality and literature was advanced by Carl Jung early in the 20th century, who suggested the existence of universal contentless forms that channel experiences and emotions, resulting in recognizable and typical patterns of behavior with certain probable outcomes. Archetypes are cited as important to both ancient mythology and modern narratives.

Plot: David Riley, once the assistant prop-master of the Metropolitan Opera, enters his retirement home's talent show in a last-ditch effort for artistic immortality. But rehearsals for his five-minute dramatic rendition of Wagner's Ring Cycle aren't going well. David convinces himself that a prop helmet he created forty years ago can save his production. He quickly enlists the help of his son, Tom, and young grandson, Richie, to break into the vaults of the Met and steal the helmet. Richie, already suspicious of his grandfather, has a more basic concern: distinguishing real from imaginary. During their quest for the 'magic' helmet, Richie connects with his grandfather and discovers that, on the stage, life can be lived in a fantastical gray zone between memories and dreams.

This concept emerged in his development of analytical psychology and contemporary approaches to psychological theory and practice. He used archetypes as a reference to inborn energy patterns that humans have possessed since the beginning of the human race. These "energy patterns" are not full-blown behaviors that are inherited, but rather potential responses that can be thought of as being similar to energy fields. These potential responses can be "activated" by coming in contact with certain situations. Thus, although the energy patterns are potentially accessible to every human, not every human will display all of the potential patterns.
